Best vegan hot chicken - Edit
This place has hands down my absolute favorite vegan spicy chicken sandwiches(of which at this point I’m a connoisseur of). I will however say that sometimes they can be inconsistent. I will still give them five stars because the experience is unbeatable the vast majority of the time

Not Vegan. Fraudulent Claim. - Edit
Advertises as 100% Vegan. Yet, when I asked about the rice krispie treats and cupcakes on the counter which looked awesome, the staff told me they weren't vegan. I asked her to clarify and she said not all were vegan and began to point out which of the items were vegan and which contained animal abuse products.
Read moreHello world, please stop effen calling your gd businesses vegan if you sell animal abuse products. That is the opposite act of veganism. That is anti-vegan activity.
I go out of my way to support vegan businesses and boycott animal abuse capitalists and this bs has got to stop. Never caged? What a lousy bait and switch. May you never find yourselves in cages except, oh wait, maybe just for dessert! That's okay right? Just a little bit of animal death and abuse doesn't hurt anybody right guys? Right? Get real.
Update: Seeing they got their vegan rating back is a real shame. You walk into a vegan restaurant and they have anti-vegan products on the counter, it's not only gross but disrespectful to vegan businesses that do make the effort not to share a counter with animal abusers, but work conscientiously to maintain a vegan environment for their vegan customers.
This is not an example of customers being confused. They are the ones that are confused by what expectations vegans have upon entering a vegan restaurant. The very minimum expectation is no animal abuse products present.
Take it up with your shared kitchen partners and ask them to stop doing it, or stop claiming vegan. It's unnecessary, pathetic and wrong.

Cons: sells non-vegan stuff, advertises as vegan, so easy to make vegan, yet they did not

Omg did you update the listing already? That’s incredible. Ugh making my safe spaces unsafe. These kinds of places trigger my hyper alertness and never fully trusting a place. Ridiculous.

Yep. Sad we have to ask a "vegan" restaurant if they are actually vegan or just, "mostly plant based greensploitation capitalists". Never safe to assume vegan just because they claim to be.

Ugh, what type of things weren’t vegan?
Read moretheNumberOfTheBeast
Sweets on the counter in a display cabinet, cupcakes, treats, etc. When I asked why they advertised as a vegan business they said it was a separate company, and the treats were not being made at the same time, just baked and sold in the same venue. Appears to be a "co-location" kitchen with a non-vegan business. The staff likely thought my concern was simply cross-contamination and not an intentional boycott of businesses that sell animal abuse products. I must have been the first liberation pledger to roll through there. Hopefully more care enough to point out how uncool animal abuse products for sale in a restaurant advertising itself as fully vegan would be if you were the one dying on a cage for that stuff.

Especially with that kind of name. They should Rebrand for transparency or make stronger boundaries and commitments to the flag they’re flying.

I have not been but just looking around I read the place it is in Lokels… is a mix of places vegan and not the things the vegan places make are vegan but other packaged and products sold may not be vegan and to ask to be sure. So if I go at least I know that ahead of time.. i do prefer to support 100% vegan businesses, this is kind of grey area.
Read moretheNumberOfTheBeast
There's no grey area. If you share a venue, a register, counter service employees and customers can and do consume animals and the product of their torture and exploitation on site-- you are not a vegan business, regardless of your legal dba filings. For those vegans who do take veganism literally as a protest against and boycott of all animal exploitation who like me refuse to patronize these establishments; this is indefensible. I hope more people put pressure on them to hopefully lead them to censure or expel their partners or find a better location so vegans can eat in peace and support them in good faith. There's no ambiguity to the baby bovines who were caged and murdered for products sold in a venue with "Never Caged" in neon lights above the the door.

Loaded and Salted - Edit
I've been searching and searching for a vegan spicy chicken sandwich that would fill my plant-based cup. Never Caged appeared on my radar offering just that, plus an assortment of other items like burritos, fries, etc.
Read moreWould this end up being another decent vegan sandwich? Yes indeed. Not mind blowing by any means but a good enough sandwich if you're vegan and miss the spicy chicken sandwiches you grew up eating.
I ordered two of their sandwiches ($14 each) - one with the mac and cheese since everyone raved about it online. I also ordered their loaded fries with chicken. The chicken sandwiches uses a breaded soy patty with all the fixings you could imagine for a Nashville style sandwich. It was spicy (but not too bad), had good texture, and a whole lot of salt (too much if you didn't catch my drift).
The real winner here were their loaded fries. To be honest, the fries themselves contained all elements of the sandwich, minus the buns. It was a lot more for the price you paid as well, so overall a much better deal. If I came back, I would stick with the fries instead of ordering a sandwich.
Be careful - the wait time for us on a Thursday evening turned out to be almost an hour. Had I known that, I would've placed my order way earlier in order to avoid waiting outside the ghost kitchen area, as it does feel a bit sketchy at night. I recommend coming here to pickup with someone that can stay in the car and head out afterwards if you're coming at night.
Pros: Comfort food throwback
Cons: Really salty food

Less than mid - Edit
This place is ok. Definitely not a place i would go again. Loaded fries were definitely loaded. But had a ton of salt and too much sauce. Sometimes less is mot. They had an off menu burrito that was dipped in batter and deep fried. This may has been better without the batter and just fried like a chimmychonga. Also lacked flavor. We also the cauliflower wings. Those were batter dipped and fried. Lack of flavor. Also had a hit of pickle. So they cross contaminate their fried pickles and cauliflower. I wish it was better. 🥹 the staff was real nice tho.

Great Burgers - Edit
One of the best burgers I’ve ever had. Kept it simple and delicious. Our group also got the chicken tenders which had mixed reviews, they use a homemade chicken which I really enjoyed but some of us didn’t like as much, definitely not the most ‘realistic’ but extremely well seasoned and juicy. Only con was that the fries were a bit lame (we got take out though so it could have been because we waited too long to eat them)
Read moreOverall everything was great and I am excited to go back!
A little note because some of the reviews seemed unclear: Never Caged is %100 percent vegan (though it might seem a bit confusing since it operates out of a community kitchen and shares a space with other non vegan business)
Pros: Excellent smash burger, Very nice and accommodating staff
Cons: Fries could have been better
theNumberOfTheBeast
It's not confusion. It's apoplexy. You walk into a venue advertised as vegan and expect not to be told that some food items contain animal death products. And yes, they share a space and a kitchen with those who do. The only separation is a legal one by the "owners" which is a figment of legal precedent and not reality which is that this venue, kitchen and staff prepares, sells and consumes animal abuse. You don't get to list yourself a vegan venue while operating anti-vegan activities on premises. By that logic, macdonalds could claim all their plant-based items are suddenly a separate "business" and call themselves vegan. It's a fiction.

Awesome food - Edit
The menu is really good and food here a tasted amazing. The cauliflower was particularly good and we both really enjoyed our food here. I'd definitely recommend.
Read moreReason for not giving 5 star below:
Cons:
They don't offer tap water and only offer bottled water / overcharge for cans of drink ($3.28). Bottled water feels a bit counter intuitive for a vegan restaurant?
Burger was actually cold. Possibly left on the side. Tasted great though.

Delicious and worth the search - Edit
The Never Caged menu definitely plays on the vegan chicken theme. Be hungry or be prepared to take the rest home.
Read moreThe restaurant is part of Lokels Only, which initially confused me with the signage. Other restaurants have rotated through the same location, but Never Caged has a good contract going.
Pros: All food is vegan., The food tends to be zesty and spicy., The portions are large enough to share.
Cons: This block of Broadway has scaffolding out front., It's pricy for those who just want to try it out., The food may be too spicy for some.
