Hai Hopes, Maid To Be Dashed - Edit
I have always harboured unabated love for Chinese food, but the opportunities to enjoy quality vegan options - especially in the UAE - have been very few and far between. So, when I discovered this luxurious establishment, hopes were exceedingly high that I had found another outlet into which I could pour my affection.
Read moreThe first thing of note is that, if like me you attend the brunch, is this: be forewarned, it’s not for the faint of heart! Even during their ‘quiet’ period in deference to Ramadan, the beats were banging, the booze was flowing, and the questionable dance moves were aplenty. And herein lay the fundamental issue with this event, the focus was more on the entertainment rather than the dining. That’s not to say it was all doom and gloom, there were some triumphant dishes amongst some of the more pedestrian offerings, and then some that clawed their way to adequate.
Of the more successful, the majority came in the appetisers. The chilled cherry tomatoes were a revelation, the string beans were unbelievably good and the melting tofu was, hands-down, the best thing on the menu.
Next, when it came to the dim sum, things took a turn for the worse. Honestly, they were almost indecipherable from each other and rather nondescript in terms of their purported flavours. Edible? Yes. Memorable? No.
There was an upswing in the standards when it came to the main course, but none impressed to point of leaving me insatiably lusting after more. The clear standout was the mapo tofu, boasting a deep, rich flavour and a satisfyingly numbing piquancy courtesy of its Szechuan sauce.
‘Dessert’ was a fruit platter. I’m not getting into how fruit is not a dessert again, but I will be kind and say that it was as refreshing and palatable as it could be.
Naturally, with the colossal amount of expectation I had somewhat burdened this meal with, it was always going to difficult for it reach such lofty heights. This aside, I still feel for the expense, the food should be far more consistent in terms of quality and just pack that be more of punch. Sadly, I don’t think I would be enticed to return - unless I wasn’t the one paying.
