Aloha to Mahalo...!!! - Edit
I'm not sure there's a better way to wind-down one's week than to saunter on over to Mahalo Cocina y Jardin for a chill Sunday evening of cocktails and dinner...! What a beautifully appointed dining room (gorgeous bar!), with an even more astounding verdant outdoor garden space, ensconced in massive Bismarkia, fishtail and Vanuatan fan palms, loaded jackfruit trees, and vegetation like something out of Jurassic Park!

Since we're moving to Boquete, it was only appropriate for me to start with a refreshing Boquete Blossom cocktail (Bombay Sapphire Gin muddled with Boquete strawberries, St-Germain, lemon, lemongrass, and floral tonic syrup). First up was a shared-plate of Muhammara (a Syrian red pepper and walnut dip, served with cucumber kimchi and sourdough toasts), which was simply outstanding. For my main course, I went with a starter (Portobello & Swiss Chard Gyozas with ginger-tamari sauce, chili-garlic oil and sesame seeds), and the Pistachio & Red Onion Flatbread (topped with olive-oil, roasted red onions, vegan parmesan, garlic-lemon dressing, and ladened with crushed pistachios). Both gyozas and flatbread dishes had bold/intense ingredient flavors -- in short, to die for, I kid you not! I was WOW'd!!! Portions are very large; no room was left for dessert -- takeaway boxes were necessary.
AND, the cherry-on-top of this whole evening of bliss was the fabulous overall service! We could not have asked for a friendlier, customer service-forward staff. We actually had three different servers: The first waiter took care of our initial orders (cocktails and starter), as well as getting our main orders in; a second person served the main dishes; and, finally, a third person wrapped-up our evening. All three were super; but, a very special shout-out has to go to our wrap-up guy, Samir, for going above-and-beyond in customer service awesomeness! It's a staff like Mahalo's that makes you want to come back again and again...! And, that we will definitely do during our week's stay in Panama City....

We liked the gnocchi and cauliflower - though was expecting the cauliflower to have a little bit of spice since Sriracha was listed as an ingredient.

It was our last evening and a highlight. We ordered 5 dishes to share and all of them were great! The people are very friendly and have a great vibe amongst each other they say themselves. The garden is wonderful!

Menu is clearly labeled with quite a few options. Good service and the garden seating is charming. Wait staff was relaxed, friendly and efficient. We ate the Swiss Chatd rolls, a nice adaptation of spring rolls and the Jackfruit Paella which I found a bit dull. Great idea but needs some flavor.

They only gave me one page for the menu. I ordered espresso, watermelon juice and chickpea shakshuka. The servers weren't extremely friendly, I waited over 20 minutes for the espresso, even longer for watermelon juice (which was only a matter of pouring it into a glass) and almost 49 minutes for the food.

In old town, open late till 11pm and best option once the earlier places close. We had the jackfruit paella which was very good, they have ipa on draft which was excellent. Hard to find ipa when traveling lol. We also had the mushroom gyoza excellent, and asparagus side dish. The tempura cauliflower was good as well. Very cool ambience for a date night

The acelga rolls were disappointing. The sauce for them was good, but if you’re a fan of eating plain vegetables in summer rolls, this might be for you. Personally, I wasn’t a fan.

Mahalo has several veg-friendly options on its menu. If the dishes we ordered are characteristic of their cooking style, it’s upscale casual with an emphasis on the sweet, the fat, and the salty: honey roasted walnuts in a green salad, maple syrup crusted tofu, crispy corn chips for the white bean hummus. I enjoyed the flatbread with veggie spreads I ordered for an early dinner but prefer vegetarian cuisine without the heavy handed additions. The garden outdoor dining space is shady, surrounded by tall trees and tropical vines that were presumably saved during the renovation of the hotel and restaurant.

I went to Mahalo everyday for breakfast - they tend to be more vegetarian than vegan - but they are happy to mix and match on the menu and come up with some great food - so I’m a chef so I’m not easy to please 🤣 indoor and garden seating - live music on Fridays 🤩

Read moreThe vegan options on the menu LOOK amazing but the taste was just meh. We had the beet carpaccio (beets were raw, not enough citrus), lime cooler (suuuuper sour) and the Seoul noodle bowl (pretty sweet for my taste). All in all the flavors were just a bit under or overdone on each dish. Atmosphere is cool and the service was great.
