Vegan restaurant est. April 2024, serving Hawaiian-Japanese dishes. Specialties include 4 different types of Japanese vegan-fried chicken (karaage), assorted appetizer plates, and bowls. Located in previous location of the well-known Nagi Shokudo, 10 mins walk from Shibuya in a calm environment. Some of the staff from Nagi Shokudo work in the kitchen. Recipes and sauces are from the award-winning Japanese-Hawaiian “Peace Cafe”, with support from their chef. Food is sugar-free, mostly organic, and locally-sourced. Serves vegan-friendly beer and wine. Access route is easiest from the Sakura Stage building in Shibuya. Reported closed May 2025.

Good vegan options - Edit
We had a lovely meal at Lotus. A selection of good options. Run by a friendly husband and wife duo. There is a serious lack of good vegan choices in Japan and we had to look pretty hard to find. I don’t think we are alone as the few restaurants we found that offered vegan options all had queues, including Lotus. The short wait was worth it.

An oasis of calm - Edit
We came here late Friday evening, just before closing, and we were pleasantly surprised to find a quiet cozy homey oasis from the hustle-bustle of Shibuya.
Read moreThe sweet chili and curry karaage sets were delicious. The chocolate cake was scrumptious — light and sweet. And the lady and man working that night were so friendly, even though we stayed a bit after closing to finish our cake.
The best part : there was no wait !

Delicious home made food!! - Edit
Staff so friendly, and food is homemade like, so happy to come here and eat!!! Unfortunately found out that they are going to close permanently on 30th April, so must go while still having time!!! Ordered the lotus plate and a portion of chickpeas croquettes, plum wine (wonderful) and red organic vegan wine apple caramel cake, delicious!!! Cozy and very welcoming place, so sad that they will no longer exist... 😢

Flavorful curries and sauces - Edit
Lotus Cafe offers a mix of fried comfort food and some healthier options, including fresh greens and whole-grain rice, which we appreciate. We enjoyed their sauces, including their curry and dipping sauces.

Great food, great atmosphere - Edit
Best part was it was easy to find. A good amount of the vegan places are hard to find or are in buildings/stations but we had no trouble. Food was amazing and their homemade ginger ale was so good. The woman at the front and the cook were so sweet. Only regret was not ordering dessert.

the most amazing food by the sweetest couple - Edit
I ate here on a monday evening entering the cafe at 21:23, 7 minutes before the kitchen closes I felt bad because there was no one else in the cafe so maybe I was keeping them from going home early but the sweetest couple welcomed me and they were so happy to see me and served me gracefully.
Read moreI had the bibimbap because it said it was the chefs specialty and some kimchi on the side with a hibiscus tea. because I was the only one there I ate my food in peace without looking at my phone just enjoying the moment. as the owners cleaned up the cafe and the most peaceful music was playing. I really felt such joy with every bite. they wanted to know if I liked the food I told them ありがとうございます。いただきます I feel bad because I am extremely introverted and wish I could have conveyed my gratitude to them more clearly.
food was delicious I had the chocolate cake as a dessert it was so perfect took some cookies home with me too. they thanked me for coming and waved me goodbye grateful to have a customer on monday night. I don’t think they realize they made my day with their amazing service 🥹🫶

I tried the lotus plate so I could get a little bit of everything. My friend got the karage curry. Both were great. We also got a homemade cola and a homemade ginger ale, which were tasty. We shared some carrot cake for dessert. It wasn’t perfect, but it’s the first vegan carrot cake I’ve ever seen.

Good place - Edit
Don't worry! Yes, "Lotus Cafe Tokyo" is located in Shibiya. However, it is located at the quiet side of the station. So don't worry about loud streets and big crowds. The Lotus Cafe is located in a surprisingly very quiet spot at a short walk (5 minutes or less) from Shibuya station. Please notice the restaurant is located below street level, but visible from street level (one has to descent a staircase to enter).
Read moreThe inside of the restaurant looks simple, yet cozy and inviting. The menu is available in English and Japanese. During our visit the waitress spoke some English. We ordered the curry and the bibimpa. My friend said his curry was excellent. My bibimpa was the best I've had in a long time. It is actually served in a traditional hot pot, so it is necessary to move it constantly to prevent the food from burning in place. This means all the ingredients get mixed very well and the unique taste bibimpa taste develops. A herbal soup came as a side dish which was also very enjoyable.
In short: good food, good location, good people.

Loved this place. Super cute and cozy with a peaceful vibe worthy of its name. I ordered the stone grilled bibimbap and the rice at the bottom of the stone bowl was crispy and scrumptious! Came served with an equally delicious miso soup. Can’t wait to go back😄

I like this place - Edit
I ordered the regular plate from Lotus Cafe, along with Karaage and a Korokke sandwich.
Read moreEverything I ordered was delicious. I don’t know much about Hawaiian food, but the combination of the LC plate and the Karaage was wonderful. The Karaage, made with soy-based meat, was a great side dish, and pairing it with the variety of vegetables on the LC plate made for an excellent meal.
Additionally, the Karaage was gluten-free, which was a pleasant surprise. As someone who tries to be mindful of high-gluten or highly processed foods, I really appreciated that.
The Korokke sandwich was also a great option, especially if you’re looking for something convenient to take out.

Really good vegan Japanese cafe food - Edit
I was so sad that Nagi Shokudo was no more but actually this is very similar (apart from the rubbish new name). I had karage curry and it was fragrants, delicious and wholesome. They do their trademark deli dishes seen in the front counter and the staff are really nice. I can't wait to come back for more delicious food.

Bland and disappointing - Edit
This is my first bad review on Happy Cow, and I feel bad because I want to support all the vegan places, but this was such a disappointing experience - especially after seeing all the rave reviews on here. There was a special event going on, which meant that the regular menu was unavailable. Instead, we could choose a "half" ramen and a "half" rice dish with one drink. We chose the nutmeg soy sauce ramen, the gyudon, and the homemade ginger ale. The gyudon was tasty, but the ramen was drowned in nutmeg to the point that you could barely taste anything else, and the little you could taste was extremely bland. Unfortunately, the ginger ale was also heavily flavored with nutmeg, and that made for a terrible nutmeg-infused combination. Maybe we were just unlucky because of the special event menu, but this is not a place we'd ever go back to. The staff was really sweet though.

Pros: Friendly and welcoming staff, Tasty gyudon
