Bridge Street Pizza and Beer

Jolly Pumpkin’s GR location sits right in the heart of downtown’s new brewery hub of Bridge Street. There are plenty of pubs distilleries and breweries to pique your interest, and for the Bridge Street plant-based pub crawler, Jolly Pumpkin deserves a slot in the itinerary.

Having visited the original Jolly Pumpkin near Traverse City, I can say what this location weans on design it makes up in food offerings. The menu itself is not extremely wide, but it has something for the American standards bar food eater. The vegan pizza is a staple, and one of the most interesting pizza bases I have ever had, sweet potato. They sometimes swap it with a hummus based pizza which is also a unique experience that must be attempted to be understood.

There are also sandwiches and other vegetarian options that can be made vegan - all of which are helpfully labeled on their menu.

A downside of Jolly Pumpkin that makes it not the crown of Bridge street is the beer options. Not that they aren’t good, but that they aren’t vegan. They focus on sours, which famously use lactose. So, good for vegetarians. They also have other breweries craft beers on tap that are vegan, but in a city ripe with local options, it hurts not to get a beer from the brewery you’re visiting.

Overall, Jolly Pumpkin is a great stop for a bar crawl with friends and a good place to try to sober up with food. It isn’t a place I would go out of my way to visit exclusively, but it deserves its place on the GR Bridge Street visit for plant-based beer enthusiasts.

Pros: Vegan options, Hip location, Walkable

Cons: Not entirely vegan, Specialize on lactose sours
