We appreciate the effort but.,. - Edit
We were excited to support a small vegan-only cafe, but the food was not good. We noticed that everything that was heated was done in a microwave, salads and dessert were not good either. So sad, but we went back to Journey Cafe, across the parking lot, to have a real meal. We do appreciate the effort though.

Saved our night after a long travel day - Edit
After a 20 hour travel day to the Big Island, we landed exhausted, hungry, and honestly a little stressed about how we were going to feed our family that late at night, especially as a vegan family with limited options.
Read moreWe saw that Herbivores was about to close, but the kids really had their hearts set on it. I hesitated to call because I never like arriving right at closing, but I’m so glad I did.
When I called, they were incredibly kind and welcoming and told us to come on over, no problem. That simple moment completely changed our night.
We rushed from the airport, and when we arrived, Chef Jeffrey and Shawn took such amazing care of us. The food came out quickly, which mattered so much with hungry kids, and everything was absolutely delicious. The Big Mac style burgers and loco moco were exactly what we needed after such a long journey.
What truly stood out was the kindness. After our meal, they surprised the kids with free soft serve, and it honestly meant so much. After such a long and tiring day, they did not just serve us dinner, they made us feel welcome, cared for, and part of their ohana.
That level of hospitality is something special. You can feel the heart behind this place.
If you are on the Kona side and looking for incredible vegan food and genuinely kind people, this is a must visit.
We will absolutely be back. Mahalo for turning a stressful night into such a memorable one 💛🌺

Awesome menu - Edit
I have had vegan moco loco on O'ahu and when I saw it on this menu I knew I needed to see what the differences would be. The tofu egg on this one was very different from the other version I had tried before. I really liked this one and it had the flavor I was expecting. Definitely a really good version of vegan moco loco.
Read moreThe tea wasn't sweet which is what I really like. I loved the hibiscus and the frozen fruits that kept the drink cool. It was very tasty and I would drink a gallon of that on a hot day.
I heard some other people talking about the wings and I knew I had to try those too. I had seen a vegan influencer on Instagram called Veganhackspod do a taste test of different vegan wings and this brand was the winner. No where near where I live has them so once I heard they did I knew I needed to get those. They come in different order sizes and I got the 4 piece because I had already eaten. I got the mango habanero flavor and it was delicious! It wasn't very spicy and that was shocking for habanero but it also didn't have that artificial sweet mango flavor you get in some things. It was a really nice taste. The texture was incredible and it falls right off the "bone". The "bone" is made of sugar cane so you can eat that too and I did. They even gave me a side of vegan ranch and I had the dip those in there and check it out. Ranch and the Mango Habanero sauce worked really well together.
I highly recommend checking this place out and don't skip on the wings! Those were my favorite and I can't wait to try something else from there soon!
Pros: Lots of variety, Delicious flavors, Good seating
Cons: A lot of single use plastics

Vegan Deliciousness! - Edit
Enjoyed lunch or dinner here all week. The staff are friendly and want you to enjoy their creations. Husband loved the Loco Moco and I loved the “Chicken of the Sea” salad. We took pizzas to go which reheated nicely (375F for 10 min). My husband liked the Greek Pizza and my favorite was the Hawaiian Pizza. Herbivores makes the best smoothies! Our favorite was the Dragonfruit smoothie. The icing, literally, was the best vegan chocolate cake ever!

Pros: Friendly staff, Delicious smoothies, Pizza to go is easy to reheat later

Pretty good - Edit
Got a lemonade and teriyaki chik’n bowl. I wish the bowl had another ingredient or two (it was just chik’n and rice). My Omni parents liked their meals (crunch wrap supreme and chik’n sandwich), but ironically I tried both of them and thought they were just ok. I know I’m just spoiled because I’m from Portland OR… It wasn’t a meal I’ll be dreaming about but very happy Kailua-Kona has such a popular vegan restaurant and wish them much success!!!

Not good - Edit
I ordered quite a bit of food to have leftovers near the national park. Some notes.
Read moreBurger: patties were clearly over microwaved with the hard crunchy exterior, not cooked on a pan. Bread and cheese were fine and saved it.
Rice bowls: potato was good. The rice was formed into a hard ball. Seemed like it had been prepared earlier and reheated. No sauce.
Chocolate cake: chunks of baking powder, not thoroughly mixed. Huge miss.
Burritos, chicken and carne asada: plain white rice, a handful of mock meats, no sauce mixed in, undercooked beans.
Really disappointed. Would not come here again.
You can do way way better nearby in Kona. I should have read the reviews more carefully before eating here.
This might be one of my lowest ratings on Happy Cow!

Great to have a vegan fast food option but it would be nice to have friendlier employees - Edit
My husband and I had been to herbivores before, so we decided to check it out again. Last time my husband had the jackfruit tacos, and it was great. Maybe he didn't order well this time, but the loco moco was disappointing. It was unimaginative. It was an overcooked beyond burger. They said there was going to be a tofu egg on top, but it didn't look like an egg at all. The soft serve was decent, and it was great that they made it with oat milk, so there was not a ton of saturated fat. I had the ceasar salad with no croutons (for gluten free folks) which I thought was pretty good. I am glad that they offered a gluten free version, but instead of charging the same amount for a meal without the croutons, it would be nice if they had gluten free croutons or charged less for omitting croutons or gave a replacement item for the croutons. The main issue was the service which was not great. There was a girl working at the counter who looked annoyed when I asked her for the parking pass. When we asked the guy behind the counter how he was doing, he said "I just work here". It would be nice if they could at least fake a smile.

Absolutely Delicious – A Must-Try! - Edit
I originally came here wanting to try a vegan poke, but the chef recommended the POHAKU BOWL CF instead – and wow, it was absolutely delicious! My Friend had the MUSH LOVE BURGER and she was just as impressed. For dessert, we shared the CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER CUP SMOOTHIE, which was simply amazing. On top of that, the chef is such a friendly and welcoming person. Highly recommended!

Vegan food in Kona - Edit
I saw this place as I walked toward my hotel on my first day in Kona and I ended up eating here everyday day of my trip. The food is delicious and also more affordable than eating at a restaurant like Journey (a vegan place nearby which also has delicious food). The family that owns this place is super cool as well. We tried the chikn crunch sandwich, pono burger, chikn ceasar salad, and asada street tacos, all tasted amazing.

Okay - Edit
Herbivores is a cute little place that offers drive through and outdoor seating. Usually we get great service but one day when me and my mom came we just ordered a hotdog and a smoothie for takeout and it took so long to get it even though it wasn't busy or in rush hour, when we finally got our food it was a hotdog on top of a piece of toast which tasted fine, the smoothie on the other hand was SO GOOD. I reccomed having a sit down meal.

Not very consistent - Edit
I have been to this restaurant quite a few times. On multiple to go orders they have left off items. For example no bac un on chic un bac un sandwich, no beef in beefy Mac n cheese. Just saying check your order before you leave. Food is okay, it’s mostly fast food. Not much is fresh fruits n veggies. But positive side it’s quick vegan food.

Tasty vegan food - Edit
We went to Herbivores multiple times to try different food.
Read morePineapple pizza with bbq-jackfruit was not our favorite combination.
Chicken Alfredo pizza: tasted amazing! Recommend!
Crunchwrap Supreme: tasty!
Burrito: big and filling, similar to Crunchwrap though
Poke Bowl: not our favorite; poke spicier then expected
Mac n cheese: small portion, little spicy
Cheesecake: good but nothing special
Carrot cake: good, but could have had more frosting
Soft serve: second time was better than the first time. The toppings make it very sweet.
They have a loyalty program: if you get 200 points, you receive a $10 voucher. Double points if you order online.
Outdoor seating available (with umbrellas).

Disappointing - Edit
I feel bad about giving Herbivores a lower rating….We were excited to eat here since it is a vegan restaurant and it has a lot of great reviews on Happy Cow. We ordered a strawberry lemonade, the chicken Caesar salad, and the jackfruit bbq sandwich. The lemonade was very good, but the food items were…underwhelming. I was sad because the salad and sandwich were listed as “popular” choices so we figured they’d be good, but that was not the case. Very bland. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things, but we only ended up coming here once so I don’t have any insight on any of the other menu items. You do get free parking in the parking lot if you eat Herbivores so that’s a plus (you get the free parking ticket from the cashier after you place your order).

We wanted to love this place, as vegan restaurants are a virtuous endeavor, but ... the tacos we ordered weren't even tepid. Everything was doused in thick creamy sauce ( including the burger on a white doughy bun). The credit card tipping options were problematic: I tend to tip 20 percent but the only options were 15, 25 and (!) 35. The "custom tip" function didn't work. I unfortunately entered 25 but if due to how long the order took to prepare and its quality, I eventually regretted the 25. Two stars are solely for the idea of the place. And our daughter did enjoy the fruity drink served with a tiny umbrella.

Small drive through or walk up window shop. Best to order online or in advance. Six tables outside to sit at. A mix of healthy and comfort food. Had the crunch wrap special. Pretty good but needed some hot sauce and wasn't as crunchy as crunch wraps I've had on mainland. Didnt come with chips.
