Awesome Vegan chicken sandwich in Grand Rapids - Edit
Hancock is a chicken shop built from the grounds of an old gas station in the bustling Wealthy street neighborhood. The building lends itself to ample outdoor seating and lawn games to play. It establishes itself as a neighborhood hangout spot. But how does the food stack up?
Read moreHancock focuses on chicken. But, thankfully, they also offer the more animal-friendly option of the seitan-based vegan chicken sandwich. This sandwich is probably the best vegan chicken sandwich in town. The only caveat is that it does not have much competition. I was pleasantly surprised by the flakiness of the crust, which is a personal preference for good fried food. The addition of vegan cheese and mayo round out the sandwich in an inclusive, if not a little typical, way.
My largest gripe with the sandwich is the sauce. I cannot tell you how excited I was to see a vegan seitan sandwich available locally. And I got my expectations sky high. I will take responsibility for not clarifying with the server, but the vegan hot sauce option is not similar to a buffalo or BBQ sauce. It is oil-based. The biggest downside to this is the sandwich becomes a little dry and dense to eat the seitan. As you probably know, seitan is not light, which normally makes it a hearty meal. But the downside is that it can become stodgy without the assistance of condiments.
Hancock has "sweet" and "traditional" options on their menu that I might try, or at least inquire to see if it is more of the tomato-based sauce I was craving. If they are, I will make sure to update my review.
The waffle fries are excellent. They are a crispy and crunchy for great salty fun. Unfortunately, the fries and pickles are the only vegan sides available. I would love to see a vegan mac and cheese choice.
Hancock deserves praise for being the only restaurant in town to put effort into a good fried seitan sandwich. Next time I go, I will make sure to clarify the sauce options to temper my expectations. This site is still a great spot to hang out. And the best vegan seitan sandwich in town for lunch.
Pros: Vegan options, Cool atmostphere, Outdoor seating
Cons: Not entirely vegan, Oil-based hot sauce

Housemade seitan chicken - Edit
I was skeptical of finding good vegan food at a chicken restaurant, but they've really knocked it out of the park.
Read moreThe breading is flavorful and crunchy, and the seitan has a great bite and flavor as well. They have a scale of sauces sweet to "hotterest" which are all vegan.
Unfortunately, the only vegan side is fries (but they are very well seasoned crinkle cut).
With how good their sandwhich is, if they get a lot of people ordering it, maybe they'll include some more vegan options.
Pros: Crispy breading, Good heat at high levels, Clearly labeled menu
Cons: Not enough vegan sides, Only sweet pickles
