Delicious & Nutritious - Edit

I've visited this great wee cafe twice and will definitely be back. Whether you are vegan or not please visit Grassroots Health for coffee "n" cake , or for lunch - you wont be disappointed. There is an excellent selection on the menu and whether you fancy a decadent slice of cake, or an uber healthy cooked or raw lunch, there will be something for you. The owners were really friendly and helpful and their food is delicious.

Amazing!!!! - Edit

I love this place! Everything tastes wonderful. Once a week I treat myself to one of Jo's custard tarts and, oh my goodness, they are good!!!! I've tried every flavour (there are four) and I can't decide which is my favourite, they're all wonderful and actually lift my mood. They have loads of other great things too. A well thought out menu and a calming atmosphere. I also use the shop to restock my pantry (not that I have an actual pantry more like a small cupboard!) They have all the vegan essentials. One more thing, I wish I had discovered washable sanitary towels years ago, they're very handy and save money - thank you grassroots. I can't say enough good stuff about grassroots, I'm just very glad it's here, please stay and please keep making custard tarts!

Vegan café - Edit

A lovely wee café with a completely vegan menu. You can find food here by some of Edinburgh's favourite suppliers, including Cool Jerk Vegan Pies, Blitz Patisserie and Considerit Chocolate. Joanne also makes her own seitan on site, which is absolutely delicious.

Found this fab little cafe via Happy Cow. The owners are lovely, happy to share knowledge and gave us samples of other home-made dishes other than those we bought. I had SLT while hubby had mac n cheese pie. Both delicious. We bought cakes and drinks to takeaway as we were on our way to the rugby. All so tasty. Will visit whenever we can. Thanks guys

Great new vegan cafe with really friendly owners! - Edit

A great new vegan cafe serving really tasty food and great portion sizes. We visited on a blustery November weekend and ended up chatting to the owners for hours about their conversion to veganism and their impressive understanding of nutrition (one of the owners is a qualified nutritionist).

We’d be sure to visit again if we were in Edinburgh!!

Pros: Friendly owners, knowledge of nutrition and veganism

Delicious, Friendly, Causal. - Edit

This little cafe in the center of Edinburgh was a vegan oasis for my partner and I during our trip to the city. Cozy and comfortable, Grassroots provides a great little spot to enjoy 100% vegan meals and pastries as well as a wide selection of coffee, tea, and other drinks. Vegan literature is available to read at your leisure while you enjoy your meal and drinks in this cute eatery.

Much recommended, absolutely delicious!

Pros: All vegan, Both sweet and savory, Affordable

Great place to learn about vegan lifestyle - Edit

Interesting place with very good food options. I would describe it as light snacks -sandwiches and wraps and and a raw food option. There are also delicious cake options. In addition to food, there are lots of vegan lifestyle related things to read and buy which is interesting for anyone who wants to learn more about veganism. The owners were very friendly and informative. I will definitely visit again.

This place rocks! - Edit

This is my favourite vegan cafe in Edinburgh! The food is delicious, I've tried at least one (or two or three) of everything on the menu and I'm never disappointed.
They offer an array of beautiful cork products, knitted and crocheted items, homemade soaps, herbals, glass straws, bamboo products, hot food, raw food, hot drinks, cold drinks and more & if that's not enough
if you're able to smile, the staff here are guaranteed to get one out of you before you leave.
Love.this.place!

Pros: Tastiest seitan sandwiches , Great food, Lovely lovely staff

Cons: Be warned, they sell out of doughnuts on occasion

A wonderful, welcoming, warm vegan eatery. - Edit

The embracing nature in which you're greeted with upon entering this glorious plant based and lifestyle store, instantly earns itself superior brownie points and that's prior to sampling their superior brownies.
The food is so delicious & perfectly balanced, I quite frankly could not leave without devouring the remainder of my meal (as if having never been fed), even though my mum-lunch-date had already ended.
The extraordinary couple who run this establishment, are down to earth, accommodating, informative in the most uplifting manner and delightfully humorous, which relaxingly adds to the magical experience of your visit.

great - Edit

Nice shop and cafe recently opened in tollcross.
Good selection of groceries and vegan cheese etc. I had a beast is a sandwich which was a bargain for the price. Homemade seitan in a Breadshare roll which was really tasty. They have a great selection of cakes and donoughts to treat yourself with a coffee.
Really good start and I'm looking forward to them expanding their offering once the get full steam ahead.

Another visit and another great lunch. Doing really well now with sweet treats galore.

Pros: groceries, good value, tasty food

Reasonable prices, food looks tasty - Edit

Grassroots has a small but tasty-looking menu, with reasonable prices. I was looking forward to trying the vegan doughnuts (£2 each), but unfortunately they were not delivered within the expected time frame and the day's activities took me elsewhere in Edinburgh. They also have a small selection of vegan groceries.

I was surprised at the comments at how friendly and welcoming the owners were, as unfortunately my experience did not reflect this. I felt so uncomfortable after my initial visit that I almost did not return later.

DeanTillbrook 09 Oct 2017 - Hi Pandora,

Sorry you didn’t enjoy your visit or have an opportunity to enjoy the wonderful doughnut family doughnuts. We are a small business and work mostly with small start up Vegan food producers. We post on Instagram when doughnut deliveries arrive as they are not an everyday stock item, occasionally we sell out as soon as they arrive and don’t even have time to post. But we also stock the wonderful Blitz Patisserie range of raw desserts as well as a wide range of Vegan/organic and gluten free foods and snacks and our homemade Seitan, Cool Jerk Vegan Pies, raw meals as well as daily specials.

It is quite common for us to sell out quickly of doughnuts and some customers find it best to call ahead to check if we have had a delivery that day and to check if we have sold out or not. We can even reserve doughnuts for a reasonable time period for customers who call ahead.

Welcoming, delicious and informative - Edit

Just back from another visit to this inspirational vegan cafe and shop. So happy to have it in the neighbourhood - if I need a really nourishing lunch or a wonderful sweet treat there's nowhere better to visit! And because they manage to cram so much into the bright, airy space you can buy your vegan provisions and/or gifts too. And Joanne and Dean are always really willing to provide advice or give you a wee sample of their latest offerings.

Pros: Beautiful food at really reasonable prices., Support other local vegan businesses, Offer an amazing range of goods

Private Unique Raw Food Dining Experience - Edit

What an amazing experience to spend the evening enjoying an Italian themed raw food menu with a small group of 11 people. Everyone LOVED the food, especially Joanne's world famous desserts! The dining experience was full of joy & laughter while being educated on health benefits of raw food. Each course was gorgeously displayed and non alcoholic wines accompanied the meal. Joanne & Dean's service and presentation of foods was outstanding. I look forward to having more guests come to Grassroots for this dining experience.
Cheers to your health & adventures!

Having a dairy intolerance finding edible cake can be difficult. But at Grassroots they all are! And without added sugar. And with all that limitation you might expect something boring, but no, they are the most delicious, fresh flavoured satisfying cake I've had. But make sure you leave some for me.
