I have brought so many non vegan friends here and the love the food. Everything is fresh and the cakes are completely decadent. I would also say it will be the best hot chocolate you will ever have. Always friendly and always fun to visit. I couldn’t recommend this place highly enough

Best cappuccinos in town - Edit

Whenever we are in Edinburgh we make sure we visit Grassroots. Their food is fabulous - today we had a wicked assortment of delicious vegan donuts and a really tasty and generous slice of teacake. Their cappaccinos really are the best around, and reasonable as well. An excellent little cafe with really friendly and knowledgeable owners.

Pros: Fab cappuccinos, dog friendly, great staff

They also sell a variety of vegan, ethical, and environmentally friendly products.
The staff are also the loveliest, most helpful people :)
I would 100% recommend anyone to stop in here for a bite to eat or one of the fresh juices

Best vegan Café in the city - Edit

The food is absolutely amazing. I thought the first time I ate there that it can't be topped, but the second time was actually even better. The prices are very good as well. The atmosphere is wonderful. It feels like a home due to the open and friendly attitude of the owners. They are always open for a chat and very knowledgeable.

Easily the best vegan spot in the city. - Edit

Grassroots is super central and in such a happening spot in town. Dean and Jo the owners are super friendly, knowledgeable and serve the most amazing food! Jo makes everything herself and from scratch - the real deal! There’s also a wee health & beauty section - amazing lip balm - and you can also find reusable straws, bamboo coffee cups, vegan toothbrushes etc. It is the most reasonably priced cafe in Edinburgh. Best seitan I’ve ever had, and also must stress that their breakfast hot pockets and sausage rolls are to die for! Just get yourself down to Tollcross - you won’t regret it!

Pros: Amazing staff, Great raw vegan options, Great prices

A must-go!!! - Edit

The only place in Edinburgh selling vegan Portuguese custard tarts and also making their own Seitan! The couple who own and work here always give such a lovely service, feels less like a cafe and more like a home! Really varied selection and some nice gift shop to buy at the small shop as well.

Pros: Open later (19h), Their sandwiches , Their donuts

100% Vegano... 100% Consigliato! - Edit

Beating the rhetoric - Edit

Grassroots beats the rhetoric of vegan or raw food being bland, nutrient-deficient and of poor quality. Grassroots is future-proof, in the sense that they offer a nutrient balance which is more sustainable and suitable for the human body whilst still delivering extremely tasty food at a good price.

There are very few food outlets in Edinburgh that can tell you the whole process behind each and every dish or ingredient on your plate. The care the owners have for the environment and the passion they have for health shines through their friendly service and is evident in the food.

I eat here multiple times throughout the week and find enough flavor and variation throughout the menu to keep me from getting bored.

Pros: Truly healthy, Very tasty, Very informative

Coffee, coziness and custard tarts - Edit

Whether you are a hardcore vegan on the hunt for some great food or you are a curious George looking to try something new, you are at the right place.

Grassroots really is a vegan foody's Eden with donuts, custard tarts, savoury pies and much more. Their homemade seitan (bought in a sandwich or wrap) is bound to impress any omni so you could definitely bring your non-veggie friends here for lunch.

And let's not forget drinks! It is the perfect place to get some cafeine in your system. Or if you are the non-coffee type they also make a wonderful turmeric latte or a hot chocolate 'delux' with whipped cream and marshmallows (yes, I said whipped cream, VEGAN). On the go and have your own keepcup? Bring it! You will get a discount on your drink.

This cosy vegan "coffee bar and lifestyle store" as they call themselves on their website (they also sell glutenfree and vegan products like pasta and vegan cheese) is great for your savoury and sweet cravings, on the go or sitting in, for the vegans and the non-vegans. And I would recommend paying them a visit!

ps. If you are like me and live way too close. They often have new foods on the menu so you will never get bored :)

Pros: Child & Dog friendly, Great food, Reasonably prices

Cons: Might have run out of donuts

Amazing!!!! - Edit

I love this place! Everything tastes wonderful. Once a week I treat myself to one of Jo's custard tarts and, oh my goodness, they are good!!!! I've tried every flavour (there are four) and I can't decide which is my favourite, they're all wonderful and actually lift my mood. They have loads of other great things too. A well thought out menu and a calming atmosphere. I also use the shop to restock my pantry (not that I have an actual pantry more like a small cupboard!) They have all the vegan essentials. One more thing, I wish I had discovered washable sanitary towels years ago, they're very handy and save money - thank you grassroots. I can't say enough good stuff about grassroots, I'm just very glad it's here, please stay and please keep making custard tarts!

A lovely wee café with a completely vegan menu. You can find food here by some of Edinburgh's favourite suppliers, including Cool Jerk Vegan Pies, Blitz Patisserie and Considerit Chocolate. Joanne also makes her own seitan on site, which is absolutely delicious.

Great new vegan cafe with really friendly owners! - Edit

A great new vegan cafe serving really tasty food and great portion sizes. We visited on a blustery November weekend and ended up chatting to the owners for hours about their conversion to veganism and their impressive understanding of nutrition (one of the owners is a qualified nutritionist).

We’d be sure to visit again if we were in Edinburgh!!

Pros: Friendly owners, knowledge of nutrition and veganism
