Unimpressive

When we walked in to look at the menu, the host told us they could make a lot of items vegan, and said, “We even have vegan desserts,” while gesturing to the pastry cases.

The food options were unimpressive. The Millet burger was soggy and thin—you could barely tell it was between the bread—and the rice and beans, while tasty, were nothing to get excited about. Most of the sides aren’t vegan (mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese), so be prepared for a sad meal.

Then, when dessert time came, we were informed the vegan desserts aren’t readily made; they have to be pre-ordered. So why tell us that they’re an option when we walk in for dinner?! Made us feel tricked into getting a mediocre meal.

There’s not a lot of choice in this area, though, so if you’re in a bind it gets the job done. It’s just not someplace you’re ever going to want to go.

Nice staff; limited vegan options

I had lunch; wait staff was wonderful, but their vegan options are disappointingly limited. I had the black bean burger; asked about coffee with a non-dairy milk, but they don’t yet offer that option.

Pros: Very nice wait staff

Cons: Very limited vegan options, No vegan desserts

Decent lunch spot

Not a lot of clearly vegan options (maybe only one), but a few more vegetarian options that can be modified to be vegan. I wanted the black bean burrito with lettuce substituted for the tortilla, but they were going to charge an extra $3, which I thought was a bit unreasonable.

I got the low fat tostada, which is clearly vegan. I eat mostly whole plant foods, with basically no oil, so I appreciated that the meal was not oily or overly salted. The beans are supposedly one of the signature dishes, but they were a little bland. I got the maple mustard dressing, which I thought was going to be like "honey" mustard but it was a vinaigrette, so I didn't use it.

The server was fantastic. She confirmed there are NO vegan breads and all of the dressings are vegan except 2 (even the secret sauce which is basically 1000 island).

I came here for a work lunch. I don't know if I'd go back by myself. It was decent, but I was not wowed. I could make the same meal at home much more cheaply.

Happy to help you...

Wildflour is a really nice, sophisticatedly local bakery-cafe. There is art (presumably by local artists) on the walls, tables scattered around a loft-like space, a small eating counter, and a double bakery case filled with truly beautiful cakes. (Sadly, none of the cakes or other desserts are vegan.) And while the menu does not specifically designate vegetarian or vegan options, there are some, and even more can be made veg/vegan with a few customizations (leave off the cheese/sour cream, etc. - which they are happy to do...if you ask. We also discovered that one item, where cheese was not listed as an ingredient the menu, was indeed added - so be sure to mention specifically what you do not want included in your dish. On the bright side, the actual food is quite tasty. We had gazpacho, rice & beans (minus the cheese) and a tostada (minus the cheese) and a side of broccoli (not on the menu). Happily, the food is not oily, greasy or overly salted (even more difficult to find than veg*an options in our experience!) So, while this is not a traditional veg/vegan-friendly place, with a bit of effort you can get a very nice veg/vegan meal in lovely surroundings. I would definitely come back here.

Pros: Very accommodating , Funky, local bakery-cafe atmosphere, Good quality food

Cons: Veg/vegan options not specified on menu

Food was good!

Mostly vegetarian options, but we were able to modify to have several choices. Server was helpful & understood what vegan meant! Millet burger was tasty. Rice & bean tostada with salsa was very good! Great atmosphere & would go again.

Pros: Good food

Cons: People smoking at the front door

Vegans from out of state

First impression was dwindling quickly as the wait staff proved a lack of basic knowledge about Vegan options and the differences between red and white wines. After several trips to the kitchen and back we wound up changing our orders twice. Food finally arrived. One order was missing a substitute for the cheese and took a bit long to get someone to respond. Overall the food was ok but not inspirational by any stretch of the imagination.

Pros: not many, They heaped lots of bread on the table.

Cons: Severely limited seating for more than 4 people , very slow to fill orders Food was ok, but seemed l, Millet burger was very bland and required much sal

Hopeful, but soon disappointed

I called ahead and asked about vegan food options and was told that they could make changes to make a dish vegan, except for the soups, which were made ahead of time in bulk. No problem. We went to the restaurant and it felt welcoming and warm, we chose a table by the window. The waitress, Doris, was AWESOME. She made sure everything I had did not have butter in it and was vegan. Unfortunately, and out of her control, the entrees we were served were not worth the money spent, except for the side salad with mustard maple sauce and the bread. My dish, promoted as a staple of the restaurant, Ellie's Red Beans and Rice, was bland and the rice was not cooked evenly. My partner, who is not vegan, had their prized Southern Meat Loaf, and even that was dry and bland as well, and the broccoli was super salty. I was so hopeful, but soon disappointed with the plant based offerings. They could have done so much better.

Pros: side salad with maple mustard dressing, bread with balsamic/ oil dipping sauce

Cons: Eli's Red Beans and Rice, Southern Style Meat Loaf

Great food!

They have lots of vegan options, you just have to ask the staff. They're happy to change a dish up. We've been twice, the first time I had the red beans and rice (without cheese) which was very good. Second time I had a millet patty with no cheese and I added avocado. Very yummy! They even double checked which breads were vegan for me! None of their desserts are vegan.

Pros: very vegan-friendly, great food, helpful staff

Cons: no vegan desserts

A perfect place for a vegetarian on the road

Roanoke is a usual stop for us on the way from NJ to visit family in North and South Carolina. We always have dinner at the Wildflour Market and Bakery. The storefront space is large, open and inviting. The staff is friendly, helpful and efficient. There are always multiple vegetarian options including specials. There is a variety, Mexican dishes, lasagna, ricotta pie, and a tasty grain burger that is different than the usual veggie burger fare. My family has enjoyed the food on each visit. Last, but not least, they have a huge selection of fabulous cakes! After multiple stops here, I can honestly say there is no downside.

Pros: tasty food, welcoming space, friendly staff

Cons: parking
