Amazing vegan hummus sandwich - Edit
It's a nice café, a bit more expensive than other places in Cuba, but the quality is better. The vegan hummus sandwich was really good.

Mixed review - Edit
Read moreThe food itself was actually quite tasty, but the prices were extremely high considering the type of place it is and the overall experience.
The bigger issue was the flies — and I don’t mean just a few. I’m talking about swarms of flies landing on the food, straws, drinks, and covering the tables. I understand this is Cuba, but I’ve genuinely seen fewer flies hovering over garbage on the streets.
And keep in mind, flies sit on trash, defecate, and then come straight onto the uncovered food here. There was zero effort to protect anything — even simple things like fresh bread were left completely exposed on shelves.
We ordered two sandwiches, one mojito, and one lemonade (which was basically lemon juice, water, and ice) and the total came to 19 USD. Absolutely not worth it.
There were four customers and eleven staff members, which already seemed odd. Why does it take two people to make a single mojito? Especially when the mint leaves were pulled straight from a plastic bag, handled barehanded, and not even washed.
The reusable metal straws were a horror story on their own — my partner looked inside and let’s just say we didn’t use them.
Overall, while the food had potential, the place was missing a lot. Yes, there’s a cat roaming around, which seems to be the main attraction for some people snapping photos, but honestly, no amount of ‘cute’ is worth eating while battling a cloud of flies and paying premium prices for a very mediocre setup.
We spent more time swatting flies off our food and drinks than actually enjoying the meal. It felt like hard work, not a relaxing meal out.
Pros: Food was ok
Cons: Flies, Prices high

Really nice cafe with great food! - Edit
In the six days we spent in Havana, we ate at El Cafe twice. It definitely caters to the tourists, so don’t expect there to be many locals. However, it is super cute, tasty homemade sourdough bread (unheard of in Havana!), great coffee, and a few vegan options.
Read moreFor breakfast we had toast with homemade peanut butter (nice protein fix!), a fresh fruit plate and their delicious coffee. For lunch we had the hummus and grilled vegetables sandwich and the hummus plate with vegetables. All was very good.
Pros: Homemade bread, Vegan options, Super cute cafe

Tasty - Edit
I had vegan sandwich it was tasty with hummus, avocado, some leaves and grilled pepper. House bread is excellent. Caffe is also good and they offer vegan milk but for 750 pesos extra (2.5$). I think an oatmeal-ginger cookie is vegan too (needs to be confirmed but I didn’t feel any egg or milk and I am very much sensitive to this taste). Interior is very nice.

This is the only place in Havana where you will find good, sourdough bread😄the coffee was good and the exchange rate was honest. Only downside is that they have no wifi.

Pleasant surprise - Edit
Cuba is struggling right now, it's common for cafes to not have the basics due to supply issues and electricity black outs are common. When we visited they didn't have my first choice but the hummus was good and a welcome break from more beans and rice at a reasonable price

Great bread - Edit
They have really lovely bread here, very different from the quality you normally find in Cuba. We went here twice, and the vegan sandwich was great the first day and bland the next. As anywhere else in Cuba, you never know which veggies they have available, so they might be missing the avocado which was the case the second time we visited. Also, the vegan sandwich doesn't have spicy sauce as it states, it just comes with peppers inside.
Read moreWe did experience that they didn't have soap by the bathrooms which was a bit disturbing after seeing staff going there 😅 Also, most of the kitchen staff would go smoke in the courtyard together.
Pros: Great bread, Cosy place, Cute cat seems to belong to the café
Cons: Expensive, No soap, Didn't have vegan milk when we visited

The breakfast hotspot in Havana! - Edit
This was my go to place during my stay in Havana as vegan options are otherwise limited. Offers vegan smoothies (with plant milk of course), accidentally vegan oat cookies and super delicious amazing avocado und tomato toast on freshly baked sourdough bread.

We had a very good vegan sandwich (with grilled vegetables and home-made hummus) and good coffee, too. The cafe has a little courtyard which was very handy to safely park our bikes.

Great place for breakfast - Edit
I went to El Cafe last week for breakfast as it was recommended as one of the best breakfast places around. Grateful to have some vegan options as it's hard to find in this area. I wish there was a little bit more to choose from. I had the hummus sandwich. And a few cups of coffee, coffee was amazing, sandwich was just good.

Charming café, good vegan food - Edit
El Café is a charming Café in the old town of Havanna. They serve several vegan options including a vegan breakfast with a hummus sandwich or avocado sandwich, and they even have vegan oat ginger cookies (We bought 10 of them😉The avocado toast (price 140 Pesos) was so good, the avocado was so creamy and tasty. Besides that, the juices are fresh and think and just a dream. They also serve many other cold and hot beverages. The café has some nice art on the wall and a beautiful, colorfull back yard. The stuff is very attentive and speaks good English. One of our favorite places in old Havana to grap some food and relax over a drink.
