nicht so toll - Edit

Edelkitsch.

Lovely place, great food - Edit

This is already the fourth vegan restaurant in Mainz (the only thing which is not vegan here are the lassis but you can order them vegan), which is great for the city! Dhyan is situated at the very top of the lovely and about-to-be-hip and very steep Gaustraße and unfortunately it would be easy to overlook if one was not looking for it in the first place.

The place itself is cosy and has a nice living-room style interior including a corner with some games for little kids. They certainly put some thought into fitting their restaurant into this tiny old building.

The 'all-day breakfast' they offer is plainly amazing: For me, Indian cuisine was so far mostly curries with dal or rice, but here they also offer some great savoury pancakes with home made chutneys and some crushed rice which has a great texture I never tasted before. Also the spices they use give every dish a special taste. I also tasted one of their home made cakes which was delicious as well.

As I have stated before, the only non-vegan thing they offer are their lassis, which can be made vegan for a steep surcharge of 1.5 EUR. This means that the vegan mango lassi does cost 9 EUR which feels way too expensive for me just for a drink. Apart from this one exception, I consider their prices not cheap but reasonable given the high quality.

I have not been there in the evenings when they additionally offer burgers and pizza etc. for dinner.

Pros: first place in Mainz for vegan indian food, small but great selection, cosy interior

Cons: lassis are very expensive
