Rayon 411, Col. Centro (at BEtween Melchor Ocampo and XicoTénecatl), Oaxaca, Mexico

Serves meat, vegan options available. Was all-veg but has added a meat dish per Oct 2013 report. Offer vegetarian versions of traditional homestyle dishes with a different menu each day; plus veggie burgers, tostadas, memelitas, and other fast food. Uses authentic local recipes like fava bean and pea stew, hibiscus flower salad, Oaxacan mole. Pleasant, historical courtyard. Attached to the Pochote Market. Open Mon-Sun 8:00am-5:00pm.

So we went there and clearly said that we were vegan. No eggs, no milk, butter or carne. We speak spanish. At first it seemed very lovely to us, delicious smoothies and ambiance. We ordered the burger and the burrito. We got the burrito with cheese and the burger with mayonnaise. Then, we found a GRASSHOPPER in the potato fries.

We were so disgusted and insulted. The lady manager came in with a big glass of grasshopper in our face, laughing, saying that grasshoppers are not meat and that they eat it in Mexico. She did not even say sorry and we said we could not pay for a thing like that.

Just don't go there. Vegan or vegetarian.

good vegetarian variety - Edit

There are at least 5 different vege dishes, including 4 vegan, good tasty variety and good value. I had the plato with a little bit of everything including a vege patty. Nice open-air dining area.

Hard to find but worth it. - Edit

Enjoyed a great vegan lunch today in a lovely traditional setting..rather like an organic food court. Finding Comedor de Zully was a bit of a challenge..but we asked around and the Comedor was points out.
We had hibiscus salad with carrots, nopal (the local cactus), home ground and homemade fabulous corn tortillas, mushroom and tomatoes, yummie squash rounds, 2 types of mole and some refreshing limeade.

Find this place...

Pros: traditional atmosphere, organic produce, friendly staff

Cons: no vegan desserts

Courtyard veggie snacks and breakfast - Edit

Wonderful little stall in the Pochote market. There are several other vendors who offer vegetarian options, but she is the only one who is completely vegetarian. Their dishes vary each day; vegans watch out as there is usually an egg or cheese sauce, but there are also vegan options as well, just ask. They put a plate together for you from what you pick out and serve it with tortillas. A woman nearby sells great fresh juices making this an ideal breakfast (it's open early!) and lunch space. Note that food typically starts running out or gets less appealing around 2 or 3 p.m.

Owners and employees are friendly, if sometimes a bit harried. Overall this is a great option for people who want a veggie option within walking distance from the zocalo – about 4-5 blocks total.

Pros: Delicious, Traditional, Cute

Cons: Small selection, Hard to find, Food runs out early
