Delicious, underpriced, casual, DELICIOUS

Got the beans and greens bowl (ginger braised white beans, grilled broccolini, sunflower seeds, gremolata, sunflower parm and crispy shallots, (vegan as it comes) and the tofu tacos which came with marinated tofu, cabbage, pineapple kimchi, jalapeños and sriracha aioli. Had to veganify that one by switching to corn tortillas rather than naan and skipping the hot honey. So good anyway, didn’t matter.

Sure to satisfy your inner Cinderella

Upon very recent closure of Bridge Restaurant with its several veg options, Dec 2017 closure of all-vegan Maize ‘n Manna, and June 2013 closure of very vegan-leaning Markos Café, Westerly offers few good choices for vegans. For an enjoyable dining experience, Cinder will satisfy your inner vegan Cinderella.

While Cinder is primarily a booze & blood eatery, no mock meats compete with real meat. Instead, its 2 worthy vegan dishes are wholesome & nourishing, meaning they are real foods, not fake foods. On your 1st visit here, you might try small portions of both. The Bok Choy Salad is made substantial by a thick dressing. The Beans & Greens is think bean porridge topped with broccolini. Keyword for both vegan dishes is Thick. While the sunflower parm that garnishes both is cheesy in name only, its toasted & chopped bits of crunchy seeds are treats without pretending to be anything but themselves.

The Lentil Soup surely is vegan, too, but not indicated online. While veg dishes are clearly indicated V or VG on the inhouse printed menu, that is not found online in PDF form. Questions, for instance about the soup, thus needlessly obscure the online menu. Online omission of more informative printed menus is an oversight of other restaurants, too. Cinderella, are you listening?

Airy with high ceilings & sunny with two walls of windows, this is as pleasant a place to eat as to work, evidenced by the friendly staff, all who greet you with smiles. Even the cooks from within the kitchen smile at you. The published wide-angle photos create an illusion that Cinder is spacious whereas the interior dining area actually is congested & cramped. Outdoors, its patio furniture & adjoining empty lot with wooden picnic tables compensate for a tiny interior. For us vegheads with olfactory nerves as sensitive as our taste buds, I recommend dining outdoors, or indoors only around 3pm, otherwise the malodourous stench of burning flesh fills the indoor dining area. Though cool & cloudy on the day we ate there, the staff willingly served diners seated even on the farthest picnic tables.

The restaurant touts its river view. Yet the Pawcatuck River here with a concrete embankment & scant vegetation or aquatic birds is so narrow that it’s more like a canal. It does buffer outdoor diners from the dilapidated industrial buildings across the river. I’d be surprised if a kayaker or canoer ever paddles this desolate stretch of urban decay except to make a landing to eat at Cinder.

Pros: interesting & sunny interior though cramped, ample parking, two noteworthy vegan main dishes

Unlike The Spice Palette in New London, this is NOT a venue for which I would make a special trip to Westerly.

Very good option in the area

We were in Westerly visiting family a few times in the last year and the Cinder was the perfect spot to get some vegan eats. There are a few regular vegan items and then specials. Interior also feels more upscale and modern than most other things in the area. Menu is very eclectic, fun and tasty. Nice outdoor space. Cocktails are great too.

Tasty vegan options & great atmosphere

I ate here in the evening on the patio, and it was beautiful! It’s right by there river. They have a couple of vegan options clearly labeled on the menu, and were able to suggest modifications to the tofu tacos to make them vegan. I tried the beans & greens, the tofu tacos modified to be vegan, and the Caesar salad. I liked them all! The food is very tasty with complex flavors. The beans & greens are spicy. The tofu sometimes is made with honey so I suggest requesting it without honey specifically. It would be nice to have a couple more vegan options, particularly ones that are labeled as such on the menu, but overall I really liked their vegan options and loved the atmosphere. The folks who work there were so nice and helpful. I would definitely eat here again when I have the opportunity!

Pros: Lovely outdoor seating area (especially at night)

Cons: Not a whole lot of labeled vegan options

Amazing and plentiful vegan options!!

Wow!! We all loved this place! The tofu tacos are covered with a delicious vegan siracha mayo, and the white bean and broccoli bowl was so satisfying and tasty. Very pleasant seating area near river.

Yummmmmmm

We loved Cinder! Food and atmosphere were both amazing. This is a casual place with a fun vibe. Order at counter and food brought out to you. I had the beans and greens and watermelon gazpacho. Both were really flavorful and presented very nicely.

Just went there a few weeks ago and was excited they now have wait service so you don’t need to order at the bar. This really kicks it up a notch!

Good food and nice to have another local vegan restaurant!

It was very good but portion sizes were small even their large option. I went a second time and ordered the Beans and Greens, super delicious!

Great for a light meal

Small portions but quality food. Some of the dishes (like the pear and arugula salad) are very earthy, so be aware if you have a more reserved palate. I would definitely like to try more of their vegan options in the future.

I wish I could give 5 ⭐️

My husband and I split the tofu tacos, the tempeh bowl and the dal and it was all amazing! The food was so flavorful and the atmosphere of the space was perfect! 100% will be coming back!

Lots of great options

Really good, hearty, soul warming vegan options. Largely plant based whole foods. All aioli is vegan and so is about half their menu. Options to add tofu (although it costs the same as meat 😑). Rotating specials. Not all vegan options are labeled vegan so be sure to ask and you’ll be surprised. Nice vibe, finally a good local option!

Best dishes: vegan caesar, tofu tacos, and beans and greens.

Certainly the best vegan food in Westerly!
