For Your Inner Cinderella

Cinder’s unique front facade stands out from this lackluster stretch of Westerly’s commercial strip just south of downtown. Airy and sunny, its interior is a pleasant a place to work, evidenced by the friendly staff whose wide smiles greet you. Even the cooks in the kitchen smile at you.

Veg folks with olfactory nerves as sensitive as our taste buds, however, should dine outdoors because the smell of grilling meat permeates the indoor dining area. While the interior is small and cramped, its outdoor patio and its large grassy lot with picnic tables provide ample fresh air. Staff have graciously served us outdoors even in cool weather when we vegans were the only ones outdoors.

Cinder is a meat and booze hangout. There's real meat for real omnivores, but thankfully no mock meats for mock vegetarians. Instead, its few veg dishes are real foods, not fake foods, though the numbers of veg dishes have markedly diminished from three years ago, assumedly due to lack of patronage of those dishes. Bok choy, fried rice, tofu tacos, and lentil soup are vegan. Mac n cheese, hummus, and two salads are vegetarian. Nothing else. (French fries are offered, but there’s no telling what meat was fried in that oil.)

The previously more numerous vegetarian and vegan dishes had been clearly marked V or VG on the inhouse printed menu, but no longer. Only the menu for online ordering indicates in descriptions in small font the few dishes that are veg. As though keeping it secret, tofu fried rice is now listed only on the online ordering menu. (It’s actually just the pork fried rice allegedly without the pork, but in my meal yesterday I’m not so sure about its absence.) Upon the closures of Bridge in 2023, of all-vegan Maize ‘n Manna in 2017, and of Markos Café in 2013, Westerly offers only a few choices for vegans. Cinder used to be among the few, but no longer.

The restaurant touts its river view from Westerly’s tree-lined and grassy river bank. Its river bank is picturesque, but not the polluted river. And don’t look across the river to Pawcatuck’s dilapidated industrial buildings and rocky shoreline devoid of vegetation. Thankfully, Cinder is located in Westerly.

Pros: Sunny interior though cramped, Ample outdoor seating, Ample parking

Cons: Fewer vegetarian options than before, Even fewer vegan options than before

Not sure what happened to my original comment, but I'll reiterate: no FOMO on my part, for not having been.

Delicious, underpriced, casual, DELICIOUS

Got the beans and greens bowl (ginger braised white beans, grilled broccolini, sunflower seeds, gremolata, sunflower parm and crispy shallots, (vegan as it comes) and the tofu tacos which came with marinated tofu, cabbage, pineapple kimchi, jalapeños and sriracha aioli. Had to veganify that one by switching to corn tortillas rather than naan and skipping the hot honey. So good anyway, didn’t matter.

Very good option in the area

We were in Westerly visiting family a few times in the last year and the Cinder was the perfect spot to get some vegan eats. There are a few regular vegan items and then specials. Interior also feels more upscale and modern than most other things in the area. Menu is very eclectic, fun and tasty. Nice outdoor space. Cocktails are great too.

Tasty vegan options & great atmosphere

I ate here in the evening on the patio, and it was beautiful! It’s right by there river. They have a couple of vegan options clearly labeled on the menu, and were able to suggest modifications to the tofu tacos to make them vegan. I tried the beans & greens, the tofu tacos modified to be vegan, and the Caesar salad. I liked them all! The food is very tasty with complex flavors. The beans & greens are spicy. The tofu sometimes is made with honey so I suggest requesting it without honey specifically. It would be nice to have a couple more vegan options, particularly ones that are labeled as such on the menu, but overall I really liked their vegan options and loved the atmosphere. The folks who work there were so nice and helpful. I would definitely eat here again when I have the opportunity!

Pros: Lovely outdoor seating area (especially at night)

Cons: Not a whole lot of labeled vegan options

Amazing and plentiful vegan options!!

Wow!! We all loved this place! The tofu tacos are covered with a delicious vegan siracha mayo, and the white bean and broccoli bowl was so satisfying and tasty. Very pleasant seating area near river.

Yummmmmmm

We loved Cinder! Food and atmosphere were both amazing. This is a casual place with a fun vibe. Order at counter and food brought out to you. I had the beans and greens and watermelon gazpacho. Both were really flavorful and presented very nicely.

Just went there a few weeks ago and was excited they now have wait service so you don’t need to order at the bar. This really kicks it up a notch!

Good food and nice to have another local vegan restaurant!

It was very good but portion sizes were small even their large option. I went a second time and ordered the Beans and Greens, super delicious!

Great for a light meal

Small portions but quality food. Some of the dishes (like the pear and arugula salad) are very earthy, so be aware if you have a more reserved palate. I would definitely like to try more of their vegan options in the future.

I wish I could give 5 ⭐️

My husband and I split the tofu tacos, the tempeh bowl and the dal and it was all amazing! The food was so flavorful and the atmosphere of the space was perfect! 100% will be coming back!

Lots of great options

Really good, hearty, soul warming vegan options. Largely plant based whole foods. All aioli is vegan and so is about half their menu. Options to add tofu (although it costs the same as meat 😑). Rotating specials. Not all vegan options are labeled vegan so be sure to ask and you’ll be surprised. Nice vibe, finally a good local option!

Best dishes: vegan caesar, tofu tacos, and beans and greens.

Certainly the best vegan food in Westerly!
