Historical place to visit, be prepared to queue

Went I went there we had to queue for about 15 mins, it’s a very touristic place. On their menu the only vegan option was the chia pudding but I think they had vegan pastries too, I didn’t check unfortunately.

Historische plek

Prachtig café waar beroemdheden als Freud en Kafka ooit koffie dronken. Ik nam de aardappelsoep en die was best lekker.

Yummy vegan cake 🍰

The passionfruit cake was really good. Reminded me of the „aldi“ ice cream 😂 Normally they have also a vegan chocolate cake (was sold out). On their menu they have several vegan options 🌱

Surprised by the vegan options

For a traditional place like this I was really surprised by the many options they had for vegans. Especially when it comes to cakes. I had a vegan pear patisserie cake, but there would also have been the classic Applestrudel or other sweets. The coffee is also nice & they offer milk alternatives. As this is a highly touristy place be prepared for 6€ plus for a cake and also 6€ plus for a coffee. Try to be there right when they open to avoid standing in line.

Vienna's classic

It's not much but it's honest work. Basically you pay your being in the cafe which is fair as it's really really beautiful. The one sweet option you have is quite good tho

Too salty for my taste

Ordered the “vegane wiener krautfleckerl” which is one of two available vegan dishes. It was way too salty for my taste but maybe I am a bit too sensitive to salt after I stopped using it in cooking.

Pros: That they have vegan options

Cons: Too much salt

Great atmosphere

Very nice looking cafe in classic style. Some vegan options available on the menu including a soup and spatzle. I had the vegan Mais soup which was tasty but the portion was little. I recommend this this place if you want to have a coffee with a great atmosphere. Don’t expect big list of vegan options.

Pros: Atmosphere , Service

Cons: Price , Small list of vegan options

Vegan spätzle in a beautiful setting

Perhaps the most famous café in Vienna. Some vegan options that are clearly labeled. I had the vegan spätzle with tofu. The spätzle were very good, the tofu could have been tastier. If you don't have a reservation, be prepared to wait between 30mn and an hour, depending on the time of the day.

Pros: Very beautiful and comfy, Vegan options are clearly labeled

Cons: Very long queue

Cons: Teuer

Cosy place in the centre of Vienna

It's a nice historic place. Staff was friendly, many of the waiters/waitresses spoke English. We had a main and a dessert in Cafe Central - everything was delicious and good price-wise. The only downside is that there is only one vegan main and one vegan dessert, they certainly need to incorporate more things.

Pros: Nice place, Friendly staff, speak English

Cons: Not many vegan options

Busy place

We got in line about 6 pm Saturday night without reservations and it moved relatively fast. I had the vegan tofu dish. It was pretty good and filling. The vegan desserts were already sold out. So I guess if your heart is set on a yummy looking dessert get there earlier than 6 pm.

Delightfully touristy

There’s something delightful about this place being touristy: all the staff speak English and they have vegan options. I ordered a coffee and the strawberry rhubarb cake. It had a rich chocolatey crunchy base and a fluffy, delightfully fruity topping.
I don’t think they would be serving vegan cakes without tourism.

Pros: A delightful vegan option, Traditional café, Friendly staff

Cons: Only one vegan cake, Only one vegan breakfast option

Go for the coffee/ambiance, eat somewhere else

I was excited to see vegan items on the menu, but they were pretty unimpressive (I had an endive and chard salad with vegan feta and a tomato/apricot soup). I wish I’d eaten lunch elsewhere BUT The coffee (I had a melange with soy milk) was lovely and the building was gorgeous! I skipped out on the dessert after reading other Happy Cow reviews and got Ice cream at Veganista instead!

Delicious vegan patisserie, but only 1

Had the rubarb and chocolate patisserie which was delicious. They also did soya milk. But that seemed to be it in terms of afternoon tea.

Very nice café, average food

The café itself is beautiful and has had many famous guests over the course of history. It‘s amazing that they offer vegan options and the food was good, but not as good as it could have been for the price. The vegan cake didn‘t look too good so I didn‘t try it. The coffee was way too expensive for what it was; not very good. The athmosphere is worth though.

Pros: Nice atmoshpere, Interesting history

Cons: Expensive, Only a couple of vegan options, Coffee is not very good

Depends on what you want

Should you visit Café Central? It depends on what you want. The architecture is beautiful for sure, and it is very famous. But it has become a loud and crowded tourist attraction where during peak times, you even have to queue. There are many coffee houses in Vienna that are pretty and even retain something of their original atmosphere and objectives, so I personally won‘t bother with Café Central anymore.
Oh, and while I have had tea here from time to time, I haven‘t eaten the vegan cake mentioned on HappyCow because somehow I missed it - my review is for the venue alone.

Pros: A vegan cake (haven’t tried it though), Famous and historic , Beautiful interior

Cons: Very busy, queuing during peak times, Has become a tourist attraction

A little touristy

Not the best cake I’ve had but it was good. Came here for the overall experience, it’s nice to have a vegan option.
