Mixed feelings - Edit
Maybe my hopes were too high coming in after having read all the rave reviews everywhere, our dinner turned out to be a little bit underwhelming. We tried six dishes that ranged from so-so to pretty good; none was amazing.
Read moreMy favorite of the night was the smoked grits, which was hearty and warming and just what we needed on a chilly winter night. The potato salad was tasty and spot-on. We also liked the cornbread; the flavor was great despite some gummy bits here and there. Not the best vegan cornbread I've ever had. The palm cakes and fried lasagna tasted flat and boring. The latter was downright disappointing because it was the one dish I was really excited about. We added the buffalo mushroom sandwich at the end after overhearing the table next to us gushing about it. I thought it was okay, too vinegary for my taste.
I do appreciate the fact that this restaurant exists because all vegan Southern/soul food is not easy to come by. But I'm just not crazy about the food. The restaurant is very tiny—they're in the process of expanding to the space next door—and the cooking smells were terrible. They desperately need better ventilation. We had actually reserved the chef's counter but couldn't stand it and asked to be seated outside. If you really want to dine in, wear clothes you don't mind throwing in the washer after.

Really Delicious - Edit
Wanted to get here before they closed for good. Food took quite a while to come out, but everything was delicious. We ordered the southern fried lasagna, the Nashville Hot, Mac n cheese, and banana pudding.

Open until November 22, 2025 - Edit
Cadences closes for good on 11/22/25--but until then, it is indeed open for business! The food here is superb: creative, subtle flavors, excellently presented in an elegant restaurant setting. A meal here is twice as expensive as at a typical place, but it is 5 times as delicious--make sure to go before it closes!

Special Place for a Date - Edit
Love the atmosphere, the food, the people, the vibe! Everyone was so nice and made our special day special. The chef dropped one of the dishes off and explained everything. Told her I had to try her green chile Mac after seeing she was from ABQ.

Good vegan food! - Edit
I enjoyed everything I had. A decadent salad (!), mushrooms, and pasta. I only wish there were more selections, the menu isn’t very big. Still worth a trip!

Delicious - Edit
We ordered the curried collards, Cajun grits, and biscuits and gravy, and my partner got the banana pudding for dessert. Everything was delicious! Collards were a particular stand out. The grits were served at a cool temp, which was a bit unexpected. They came with something fried, might have been jackfruit, that had a tasty kick. They told us the dishes were meant to be shared and it was a bit awkward to split. The gravy was also amazing, and highly recommend giving them a try. This would have made a good brunch but they’re only open for dinner. I expect we’ll be back here to try more.

Very fun special sampling menu! - Edit
My first time eating at Cadence and it was a hit! Got to try their post-Juneteenth special sample menu ($75 per person) which includes some items on their regular menu plus new additions. It was a very fun way to try a variety of dishes at Cadence! Generous portions. Excellent and kind waitstaff.
Read moreThe spread included 6 dishes (although we opted to try both dessert options):
1. Fried pickled okra: my favorite of the dishes and I’m not even a big okra fan! Perfectly crisp but also tangy pickling taste
2. Cobb salad: very solid but nothing too outstanding
3. Fried green tomatillos w/ vegan feta: the tomatillos are excellent! The feta is a strong acquired taste
4. Green chile mac: definitely has a kick
5. Barbecue skewers: interesting texture but overall quite tasty!
6a. Cherry cobbler: rich and
6b. Banana pudding: delicious! Light and airy
Will definitely be coming back to try their regular menu staples!

I got the fried green tomatillos, the green potato salad, and the green chile mac and cheese. Everything was amazing! The mac was perfectly spicy and everything was flavorful. The staff was incredibly kind and the chef came out to explain each dish

Think some tweaks are needed - Edit
Service and ambience were excellent! However, I just wasn’t crazy about the food. We had basil lemonade (5*, love!) corn dip (5*, awesome!), fried esquites dumplings (nice), grits and a Nashville hot. I found the texture and aftertaste of both the grits and the Nashville hot a bit…weird? Slightly burnt/overfried on the Nashville hot. And also felt more could be done with e.g. tofu or seitan because (this may just be personal preference) it’s nice to have a more substantial protein-y meal to balance out the friedness. Finally, one of my personal pet peeves is when somewhere says plates are intended to share, but the dishes don’t lend themselves to sharing — I.e. are hard to cut up/portion out. After spending $70 each, I would’ve liked to leave feeling wowed, but was a little disappointed.

Cadence - Edit
Spectacular vegan soul food and friendly staff. We loved everything, but if you pressed me for a favorite, that’s a toss up between the cowboy caviar and the grits. 💚

Good experience - Edit
Our party tried several things on the menu (portions on the smaller side) )and they were all very good. TThe only thing we didn’t like were grits. The do a lot with a small space but the area that stars seats 6 was cozy and private but lacked ambiance.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Edit
Every dish was delicious! Cadence delivered on every aspect. We arrived with no reservation and were seated at the bar within minutes. We ordered the wedge salad, green chile Mac, Cajun grits, and Nashville hot chicken sandwich.
Read moreThe salad came first and was amazing! The dressing they use for it was fantastic. I would literally go here again just for the salad. Next came the green chilli Mac which was quickly eaten. Love the breadcrumbs on top. Next was the Cajun grits with banana blossom catfish. The grits came with corn which wasn’t mentioned on the menu so I just placed it to the side. Super flavorful dish. Highly recommend. Last came the chicken sandwich which was great as well.
Excellent dining while in NY.

Yummy - Edit
The place and staff were great, but something about the fancy soul food doesn't quite work for me personally. It was delicious but maybe a bit small. We were instructed that food was supposed to be shared, but some of it was quite hard to share tbh😄I'll probably give it another shot in the future

Good but small portions. - Edit
I'm used to comfort food coming in big portions so it was a little disappointing to see the size of plates, especially for the high prices. However, everything was tasty and I enjoyed my meal very much!

Not your same old same old…Very Creative - Edit
This felt like an upscale restaurant without the upscale prices. The food was creative and tasty! We had the meatballs, kale gratin and a pizza. The meatballs were outstanding!! The pizza was very good, much better than other vegan pizza that use too much fake cheese. The creative toppings really made it! The kale was our least favorite, because the other 2 were so delicious.

100% Vegan - Edit
Had a celebration dinner at this restaurant and the attentive was appreciated. The service was great and the waitress took time to explain how their menu works. The atmosphere was lovely as lights were dim and music playing in the back room. The jerk Mac and cheese was the best for me, it was creamy but had a spicy kick to it. I love the Franklin green dry vermouth cucumber drink it was really good and had a nice taste to it. Their kale salad was a taste of the tropical as it had various fruits and the ranch dressing was excellent. The night was even more special as the restaurant made my special day meaningful by having candles for the moment along with a glass to taste the event. The cornbread wasn’t my favorite.

Very unique dishes, even for a vegan restaurant in nyc, and very tasty!!! Extremely friendly service and a nice location. We sat on the sidewalk and it was exquisite. Tex Roy, our server, was lovely. Will be back for a special occasion.

OMG The Southern Fried Lasagna! - Edit
What’s not to like about Cadence?! The atmosphere, decor, super friendly staff, music and last but not least, THE FOOD! My 1st time going was with a group of 12 people so the menu was preset to certain items to accommodate a bigger party and it’s served family style. I was blown away by the flavors alone! The next 2 times I went, I was able to order anything off the menu and boy oh boy did I. It was definitely a splurge but worth it! The potato salad with the homemade pickles was amazing!! I enjoyed the crisp texture. The southern fried lasagna is my absolute favorite!! I could order 5 plates of it. For a special occasion or simply to treat yourself, dining at Cadence is an experience you won't soon forget!

Great Southern Vegan Food - Edit
The food is amazing. It makes Southern classics vegan and does it by still celebrating the plant based ingredients instead of hiding them away.

Best Southern Food - Edit
Dining at Cadence was a memorable experience, from the seasoned potato salad with a bit of crunch to the maple skillet cornbread with melty butter and mango jam, and palm cake with a flavorful chipotle aioli slaw. I liked the pine nut ricotta and spinach in the Southern fried lasagna, which has been called a “masterpiece.” But I didn’t care for the Beyond Meat ground beef in it. The cobbler was superb, with hot and tender berries and apple.

Amazing vegan soul food - Edit
We stopped in with a last minute reservation and wound up ordering half the menu. Everything was good - but a particular item I would call out is the Mac and cheese. I usually wouldn’t care too much (it’s not a dish I seek out) but this actually has a ton of flavor, would order again.

My fave restaurant in NYC - Edit
Every time I go I feel like I’ve stumbled upon a hidden treasure. The decor is so damn cool but it’s the food that brings me back - the “crab” cake and especially the southern fried lasagne, which tbh I think about all the time. It’s a bit of a splurge but worth it, set apart by the chef’s innovative dishes

No bad options - Edit
Went here for an early dinner and loved everything we tried. Had the potato salad, the jerk mac & cheese, the heart of palm crabcake, the deep fried lasagna, and the cornbread. It was carb paradise. Server was very friendly, and the drinks were delicious.
