great vibes and great food - Edit
With the New England VegFest, Worcester has become a focal point for vegan food & lifestyle. That reason for visiting Worcester occurs only once a year, while for me a year-round reason is the Worcester Art Museum. Yet I somehow neglected to eat at this restaurant that is only one mile away. Repeat, only one mile away from the WAM. Though “on the other side of the RR tracks” or, in this case, of Interstate-290.
Read moreContrary to some other reviewers’ descriptions, the neighborhood is ethnically and racially diverse, meaning one-quarter white, so white honkies such as myself can feel at home here. Agreed, the neighborhood is rundown, but no ghetto. Also, contrary to other reviewers’ comments, the Eastern Av street parking in this residential area is ample and only a few steps away. Though the street is narrow, traffic is uncongested. The two hard resin tables with seating for eight are like in fast food joints, so most customers order takeout. While you might be disappointed by this restaurant’s unpretentious façade and cramped interior, you won’t be disappointed by the welcoming Rasta vibes inside, nor by the food.
Food is served in round aluminum containers for both takeout and eat-in, so don’t come here with a hot date. Do come here for a hot meal. The food is all-vegan. When it opened 11 years ago, Belmont Veg was all-vegan back then too, but not as many people knew the word’s meaning or its tenets, hence its name, “vegetarian.” The choices are plentiful, and the servings are generous and very inexpensive. It is even more inexpensive if for $2 extra you omit the white or brown rice. (If you do want the rice, there is no extra charge for brown rice, as at some Chinese restaurants.)
What is offered is similar to that of a homey restaurant in Kingston, Jamaica, where Steve the chef was born. In 1982, when I ate in Kingston where the Rastas of Kingston eat, there were only four dishes from which to choose. Belmont offers eight or nine fine examples of Jamaican-based cuisine, all thankfully Americanized, which for us honkies means that the spices are very mild.
On par with the food are the vibes. While waiting for their takeout, the locals all seem to know each other, so it’s a party atmosphere, even when I was there at 2pm in the afternoon. Tell the servers you are a longtime vegan, and they will treat you royally. Tell them you are from out-of-town (in my case, 75 miles away), and they will make you feel right at home. I'll be back!
Pros: the food, the vibes, the inexpensive prices

Stopped at this place with my family,I'm the only vegan and though they made jokes this restaurant did not disappoint. You pick what you want on your plate- greens, beans , baked beans, fake meats and mac n cheese. Worth the stop !

If you live in or around worcester and havent tried this place - you are seriously missing out. Loved by meat lovers and vegans alike. Do yourself a favor, and head over for some takeout. Get a large plate, try a little of everything, and enjoy the leftovers.

Very flavorful - Edit
Undeniably my favorite vegan restaurant in the northeast! The process wasn’t very streamlined, but the part that matters - the food - was absolutely incredible! So much of the right flavors. My fav mac n cheez since Madison, WI.

I ate the whole large plate in 1 sitting. If you don't know me that doesn't seem as crazy as it is. I'm the person who brings my own Tupperware to restaurants because I can never finish a plate. This was so freaking delicious I could not stop eating until it was all in my tummy.

Unique "Bit of Everything" - Edit
Really unique hole in the wall vegan joint with good flavors.
Read moreStopped in on the way to CT and rocked a large bowl with pepper "steak", mac n' cheese and collards with brown rice. Everything was good, especially the steak. The mac n' cheese had a bit of a sweeter taste (which I would assume is coconut) and the collards were on point.
A large is big enough for 2 people, so at $15, it's a good deal (you can fill it with anything and evwrything on the menu). Will likely make the trip to try some of the other options.
Parking was a bear, so grab and go!
Pros: Great vegan options

Fantastic - Edit
Food was excellent. My first time visiting today so sampled a little bit of everything from the mac and cheese and BBQ tofu to the collard greens. Super fresh and seasoned perfectly (although I would have preferred a bit more heat). Would highly recommend.

Can't get enough! - Edit
Visiting from out of town I spotted their sign and had to stop for dinner. I brought my non vegan friend and her biggest compliment was everything was so delicious she could not tell anything was vegan (as if I would want anything else!). We split a large sampler with every dish on the menu. It was so good I decided to go back for another dinner myself earlier this week. Disappointed they are closed on Sunday, or Is go for round 3!! The owner was so gracious and was nice enough to let us try a few foods to make sure we liked them. Highly recommend, only wish he was in Tampa!

This was one of favourite places we went on our trip. The wait kinda sucked but now I understand why. Not only are the people why work there incredibly sweet and helpful, the food was amazing! I've never had Jamaican food before and can't even describe how much I loved it! If we hadn't been leaving the next day I probably would have gone every day we were there. I am glad I didn't pass on this place. Seriously, go there right now!

Belmont vegetarian may not have ample seating but it more than makes up for its lack of decor by having some of the most delicious food, vegan or otherwise. take the staff's advice for your order and you won't be disappointed.

Amazing! - Edit
My husband and I shared the large combo plate. It came with BBQ, mac n cheese, collard greens, pepper steak, curry, rice, and beans with smoked tofu. Everything was delicious! My husband's favorite was the BBQ, he was so impressed with the flavor and texture. My favorite was the beans with smoked tofu. Quite frankly, I was in awe of them. I'm at a loss for words to describe them, but they were life changing! I don't know how Steve does it but we will be sure to make excuses to go back to Worcester just to enjoy more of his food.

Awesome vegan Jamaican fare. I recommend getting a large plate and trying a little bit of everything because they have a great variety and all of it is great. The soy chunks were especially impressive. I'm sometimes skeptical of TVP/TSP, but the soy chunks here were really well-seasoned and delicious.

Sometimes the places you find that you least expect are the best. This qualifies as one of these spots. Found it randomly on happy cow. Had about 8 hours in town. Was so delicious that I had to order another meal after eating the first. Very friendly service and small but quaint atmosphere. Highly recommend checking it out!
