Best Oyster Mushrooms Sandwich

The ginger tea and strawberry lemonade were really good. Trued a sample of the Madrajhara (lentils, rice, and caramelized onions), it was really good. Collards were very smoky and good but a bit more oil than I'm used to. Mac and cheese was good, but a bit over. There were lots of stong flavors but wasn't salty, which was great. We also tried the sweet potato pie, which was awesome. We drove an hour and a half to try it out. We will definitely be back.

Mushroom chkn burger 10/10

Lovely little establishment. Owner was super friendly. Loved the Mac & cheese too.

Beware of surroundings as there tends to be some sketchy people hanging around the area who will attempt to approach you in the parking lot.

Great flavor

I got the banu burger with the chips and salsa as a side. Burger was delicious, I asked for light sauce and it was perfect. I also got the Mac and cheese, which I don’t usually get out because I feel like it’s hard to find a good vegan Mac but it was SO GOOD here. My wife got the philly cheese steak and loved it. One of the owners took our orders, cooked our food, and delivered it to our table. He was very friendly and helpful.

Pros: Mac and cheese is great, Burger was very good. , Good prices

Delicious food

Outside a bit sketchy looking, however inside was a clean establishment with friendly and helpful staff, clean restrooms, and delicious food!!!!! Will absolutely have to return next time in town. We got our food to go and we headed to the botanical Gardens for the day. The food was absolutely amazing and it made our picnic wonderful 🧺 Thank You 😊

Pros: Clean, Friendly , Delicious food

Cons: Kinda sketchy outside

Will definitely be back!

This place is a diamond in the rough. Very unassuming from the outside and not much to look at inside BUT THE FOOD!!! Easily some of the best vegan food I’ve ever had! The salsa is THE BEST I’ve ever tasted, hands down. I had the Philly Fake Steak and my husband had the black bean burger. No complaints. Don’t expect to get in and out fast because they’re doing a lot of business with a very small crew but they’re super nice and humble. Highly recommended!

Pros: Great food, Fair prices, Good portions

⭐️

We drove to Banu for brunch at 1:30 on a Sunday and they were closed. Everything I could find online said Brunch till 3 on Sundays. It was not a holiday, there was no social media post or update about a change in hours on their FB nor IG. 🤷‍♀️ Unlikely to return; from the outside it does not look welcoming with barred windows & door, and a cramped parking lot, next to a gas station, and behind a quick lube that was closed yet occupied by people loitering.

Cons: Not open hours listed on HC & Google, No hours listed on their website

Tastiest of Durham!

While in NC tried several vegan restaurants in the Durham/Raleigh/Chapel Hill area and Banu Vegan was hands down the most flavorful. We had the chicken biscuit breakfast with 3 sides (sausage, potatoes, kale) and everything was delicious. Also got the shrimp and grits, if you like grits like my vegan partner does you'll love their version, he was very happy!!

Cozy (could use a bit more decor) spot, father & son business, very friendly, we got to chat a bit about the vegan scene there, customers so nice & friendly too! One person gave us a vegan cookie to sample, her own product that will be soon available at the restaurant. We will definitely be back for lunch or dinner next time in Durham.

Very good

I’m not going to lie, I was pleasantly surprised by how good this food was. The establishment seems to be in a bit of a seedy area and they didn’t have a ton of patrons for a Friday night, but everything I ordered was wonderful. Not to mention hot and fresh (I got it to-go and I’m still saying it was hot and fresh). I was a bit bummed that they were out of a few items I was interested in trying but the gentleman at the register was very kind and allowed me to ask my questions and even let me taste test an item that I was in the fence about. He was great and his recommendations hit home. I’ll definitely be back!

Go for brunch

It would be easy to miss this modest vegan soul-food restaurant, which is tucked away in a strip mall behind a gas station. But I'm glad we went for the twice-monthly Sunday brunch. The soy-chicken biscuit was sublime—it's hard to make a good vegan biscuit—and the accompanying sides were good too, especially the kale. Service was friendly, and the prices were reasonable.

Worth multiple visits!

This was our first time here, and it definitely won’t be our last! The food was so good! We got the OG Chikin Sandwich and the Jerk Burrito. Both were incredible! So flavorful! The burrito was very spicy, even for my husband who loves spicy foods. It took a while to get our food because everything is made fresh…like we like it. It’s worth the wait! The chef and person who took our order were both kind and helpful. Great music was playing. We just loved this place!

Pros: Food taste and variety, Service, Clean bathrooms

Why haven't we tried this sooner??

I had Phillie cheese steak with Mac and cheese. Hubby had BBQ jackfruit with chips. Both were really good, especially the nac and cheese. Deserts were amazing we had strawberry cake and sweet potato pie that reminded me of my late mother-in-laws. Yum! We'll be back!

Pros: Lots of flavor, Good size serving, Friendly staff

Cons: Not heath food, because of the oil, but so good

Great Mushroom Sandwich

I visited Banu Vegan while visiting Duke for the day. I had the fried mushroom sandwich and Mac and cheeze. Both were delicious. I’d eat here again to try something different on the menu.

Cons: Easy to drive past if you don’t know what you’re l

a great hole-in-the-wall spot!

Wonderful food and service. Their classic is the vegan philly cheesesteak, and i had that with a slice of sweet potato pie that was wonderful. A stellar meal at a great price too!

Nice!

We got the oyster sandwich with Cajun fries which the sandwich was very good! The fries were undercooked and the seasoning wasn't very cajun like to me personally. We also got the Philly which my bf loved and he also enjoyed the Mac and cheese.
I would order again but not get the fries. Also wish they had dipping sauces.

Expected Better

Based on the reviews I really expected more from this place. Sadly it didn't live up to the hype for us. Plus it's veery slow. One cook in the back during a Fri lunch rush.

Typical Southern veg place, with a couple noteworthy dishes. The Mackin Cheese, Islander Smoothie, and the Jerk Burrito. Wanted to try the Po Boy but they were out of skrimp.

Unfortunately our OG Chikn Sandwich (deep fried oyster mushroom) was too oily. The fry temp was way too low. Most restaurants mess this up so I'm not surprised. But my stomach instantly regretted eating it.

The Jerk Burrito, however, saved the day. Filling, and well seasoned, but not incredible. The Islander Smoothie was good. And for some reason the Mackin Cheese was a stand out. Seasoned, salty, gooey and creamy. The quality was surprising given the other dishes.

I overheard the cashier say the Philly Cheesesteak is very popular and the photos look great. Maybe I'll give it a try next time. Most disappointing were the Cajun Fries. Soggy, crinkle-cut fries with what seemed to just be Lowery's Seasoning on them. Sad.

The Sweet Potato Pie slice was delicious, but small. Every sandwich served with blue corn chips and a reasonable salsa.

Pros: Friendly Service, Sufficient Parking, Indoor Seating

Cons: SLOOOOOW, Cost/Quality Ratio Off

Delicious food with lots of gluten free options. For less than $20, I had enough food for dinner and lunch the next day.

Yum, including best cupcake I've ever had!

The location is not very attractive, right next to a gas station. But the food is very good and the counter service was very friendly. We got the powerhouse bowl, fries, OG chicken sandwich, mackin cheese, ginger drink, and a strawberry cheesecake cupcake. I've had better vegan mac n cheese, but the oyster mushroom chicken sandwich was DELISH and the cupcake was probably the best cupcake I've ever had! It had a creamy filling. I definitely recommend this place.

Pros: Great food, Friendly service, Cupcakes are amazing

Cons: Location not attractive, Mackin cheese a bit bland

Worth the wait

The salads were healthy and delicious. The oysters in the chikin was also tasty. The Mac and cheese was different than I'd ever had. Service was excellent. They told me it would be a while up front. Enjoy the music and don't sweat the small stuff

Pros: Inexpensive , Nice portion sizes

Cons: Limited seating

Amazing little spot!!

Super delicious vegan food!! Very nice staff.
We had the Jerk Burrito and Skrimp po boy, everything including the sauce is homemade. The drinks are yummy too (especially the smoothie!!). Unfortunately there were out of all the desserts when we were there, but have a nice selection and all sounded amazing!
