The curry is the only good vegan option - Edit
I had such high hopes for Amaranto. I have been talking with the owners since before they opened, back when they had a small curry stand down by the docks. They’ve told me many times that they are going to add more vegan options, but so far it hasn’t happened.
Read moreThe setting is beautiful. The restaurant itself is lovely and the grounds are stunning. They have a great selection of drinks, including some good non-alcoholic options.
The only things I eat here are the papadum and the curry. I tried the pakora sandwich once: the bread was over toasted and overall it was awful. I had the cold peanut noodle salad a couple of times. The first time it was pretty good, the next time it also was awful.
At one point they added a vegan butternut ravioli special. We had it twice and it was absolutely amazing. But I’ve never seen it since. We’ve also been told that they will add vegan pizza options, but that hasn’t happened either.
I hope at some point they will add more vegan options.
Pros: Beautiful setting
Cons: Limited vegan options

Lovely restaurant with lots of vegan and vegetarian options. Delish! T - Edit
The food here is a step above what you expect in a small Guatemalan town. They have many vegan options, as well as vegetarian. They do serve animal products but everything is well labeled on the menu. They can also make adjustments to make some things vegan or veg. Service is wonderful and the atmosphere both for lunch and dinner is very peaceful and sweet. Their vegan curry comes with falafel (3 curry styles) and their lunch specials often include a vegan option and a glass of wine (not sure if vegan wine). They have a delicious vegan sandwich. A vegan butternut tofu ravioli was the special of the day. I had the best Mai Tai I’ve had in years and their non alcohol juices and drinks are refreshing and original. They assured us all fruits, veggies, herbs are cleaned in biocide which is important in central americas. Outdoor seating is semi-private which is nice for conversation. Drinks and a filling main dish run about $30. USD for two with some to go most likely. Note. This is not in the Rancho Grande Inn but just to the left of it facing the hotel. Like many places in Guatemala, using address unlikely to work. Tell tuk tuk driver it’s next to the Rancho Grande Inn and they will get you close.
