Defensive waitress. - Edit
My partner and I went here after a disappointing experience at an Italian restaurant, where the food was flodded in oil.
Read moreWe knew they had papaya salad on the menu, which is our safe food when it comes to fresh, oil free options. All we wanted at this point, was food free of oil.
We ordered the papaya salad and the lotus stem salad, with a smirk on our faces we asked if the salads had any oil just to make sure (they never should). The waitress, who spoke very good English btw, confirmed and made sure that there was no oil in the salads.
When the salads were served, they were glistening as if they had oil in them. We tasted them and immediately we could feel on our lips and by touching the salad, that they were oily.
So we told the waitress that, by our surprise, the salads contain oil.
We were received by denial, that absolutely there was no way there could be oil in the salads. As both me and my partner have been studying food science and human nutrition for 5 years, we know oil when we see, taste, and feel it. We felt like it wouldn't lead to anything by arguing with a condescending waitress, we ate the food without really enjoying it. Before we left, I did tell her that there was undoubtedly oil in the salads, as the plates were covered in it, and gave her some technical indications for how I could be so sure (oil droplets, unable to wash the plate with plain water since oil is insoluble in water, etc.), and said to her that either she was lying, or she didn't know what the ingredients contain.
We left feeling powerless food wise, we couldn't even get a fresh salad without oil.
2 stars because I disliked the food.
Pros: Atmosphere, Decor, Cute cat
Cons: Lying/unknowing staff, Food not living up to expectations

Not as good as it used to be - Edit
This year I visited several times as I have enjoyed the menu a lot, but now I find the old problem with popular and well reviewed restaurants...they take their foot off the pedals. I still enjoy their Grilled Eggplant and Tofu, and the delicious Chao Mushroom but other dishes now fall short by quite a bit, and the service is now quite slack as well - indifferent esp when the owner is not there.
Read moreI find most vegetarian restaurants in Hoi An quite boring, samey and have dull uninteresting food choices, so this is the main reason I now eat Vegan as there are many excellent Vegan places here, with far more interesting and innovative menus to choose from and enjoy.
(I have stayed in Hoi An 6 months a year for the last 5 years)
Pros: Chao Mushroom, Atmosphere, Fair prices
Cons: Food not as good/tasty as it used to be, Smug service, Never really listen when I make suggestions

Tasty food in a nice atmosphere - Edit
All the food we had was delicious: fresh mustard leaf spring rolls, fried spring rolls, and the mushrooms with lemongrass and chilli had a great kick. Nice atmosphere - we sat in the outside garden area which was covered (didn't get rained on) and they had fans, pretty lanterns, rock garden and trees. Great service and our waitress spoke excellent english.

Lovely interior, nice food - Edit
Very cosy and lovely unique interior. Food was nice, although the okonomyaki (Japanese'pancake') I had was very greasy. Waiters were nice although one tried to take away our drinks when our glasses were not empty (at all) yet, a bit weird. Prices are ok. Asked for no straws in the drinks and they came without, nice!

In my opinion the best vegan/vegetarian restaurant in hoi an. - Edit
The food is great. The portions generous and the menu large.
Read moreThere are other great places offering similar quality but the sheer size of the menu and vegan options makes this place the best in hoi an.
I can come here every day for a few weeks and not be too bored of the menu. Other places become boring after just a couple of days.
Some staff don't speak great English but they're always very helpful and try to help as much as they can.
Pros: Lots of vegan options , Friendly staff, Nice atmosphere and beautiful place
Cons: Starters seem over priced (same as mains), A little far from the centre of town but worth it

Superb vego bday dinner - Edit
Good vibes, amazing food, kind staff and a cute cat named Peanut. We have been back to Hoi An three times over the last few years and Am Chay is still one of our favourite spots. Tonight we had the best Pad Thai, sauteed broccoli and veg, fried tofu with salt and lemongrass and some cold rolls along with many mojitos and gin and tonics. We also celebrated a birthday and the staff made everything perfect. 💯

Avoid at all costs - Edit
Avoid if you're vegan. They recommended the Japanese pancake without mayonnaise to make it vegan, so we ordered that. It came covered in mayo so we sent it back asking for a new one without mayo. They brought out another but it turned out to be the same one, with fresh toppings but with mayonnaise still visibly dripping round the sides. We sent it back again and when it came out a third time it was clear that it was still the same dish and they'd just wiped round the edges, still leaving some mayo behind. Disgusting and won't be returning.

Good food overall - Edit
Liked the food. Spicy noodle soup, bitter melon salad, pad thai and lemongrass tofu were all nice. Although in general we feel the restaurant is slightly overpriced. Especially the tofu, as there were only 4 pieces on the plate (no vegetables nor rice). A bowl of steamed rice was another 20k, which made the total dish 75k. Not worth the price, in our opinion.

Mediocre - Edit
The location is away from Hoi An old city but use Grab to get a ride here. The food is ok but the menu is confusing and you cannot tell what’s Vegan and what’s Vegetarian. There are very limited protein options apart from tofu or likely this weird mushy soy product they seem to have here in Hoi An. There’s no bean option for protein apart from Green Bean Soup. As a whole food plant based eater I find it hard to get any vegan food in Hoi An that isn’t fried or stir fried. I had the spinach soup at this restaurant and it was tasty but ask for no added salt as it is quite salty. They ask if you want sugar with everything (even bread) which is a worry as you can never be sure what sugar may or may or have been added too

We paid 45 for a mango/passion fruit juice and was the worse we had in Vietnam... looked good but not worth. Same with the mango ice cream, lime one is good :)

Don’t get the fuss - Edit
Went here last night as there was so many 5 star reviews.
Read moreWe ordered the crispy tofu, mushroom curry and papaya salad. The food was so bland, I would have thought that the papaya salad would have been a bit spicy, but it was just like dry coleslaw. The mushroom curry had no mushrooms but fake meat and over cooked vegetables. The crispy tofu was silken tofu which just gave it an odd texture and the dipping sauce was mayonnaise with a chilli sauce.
Left the restaurant very disappointed. I’ve had worse meals but with so many great reviews I was expecting something more.

Pretty Place with Good Food - Edit
This place is a bit retired from Old Town but is worth the walk there. It is big and has a nice decoration. The food is really tasty, with nice sauces. I tried the “Am Special Spring Rolls”, which were delicious and after that the “Morning Glory Salad”, which was very refreshing. The pineapple juice was ok but a bit watery for me.

I asked for something local and they made me something off the menu, a Hoi An specialty called Cao Lau. Absolutely delicious. It should be on the menu! Portion was very big (55NT). Ambiance is great. And of course the staff was amazing. Big menu, will definitely be back

This restaurant is amazing!!! The food is so flavorful and delicious and there are lots of vegan and vegetarian options! Helen (the co-owner) is absolutely lovely. She sat down and talked with us for about 20 minutes at the end of our meal. I can not recommend Am enough. I wish I had more days there so I could go back multiple times!
