New Operation- NOT Better - Edit

I used to stop in for a cheap falafel or the only vegan Kibbeh I have ever had, from time to time, prices and food were fair as well as fast and convenient. Last year sometime came under new management and lost the physical charm of the establishment replacing the diner-esque quality with a new Ikea-esque facade. They also replaced many of the menu items- mostly pizza? I have only been back twice since the change, the first time waiting over 45min for one falafel (I had ordered two, but they ran out of falafel batter after the first one that still took 45minutes to fry?!) and a spinach pie which turned out to be lamb something upon opening it. I feel like the new management is trying hard to make the place something it is just not, and has lost the fair quality of food at a fair price in a convenient amount of time. What is up with Middle Eastern Pizza anyways? This is the second establishment to feature it around Milwaukee?

Pros: your table looks like it came from Ikea, Staff try to be nice and friendly

Cons: food is below par, not enough real options, staff don't understand what is veg

Biserka 22 Feb 2013 - Casablanca, which is now on Brady Steet just off Van Buren, has been serving vegan kibbeh since the 1980's. Chef Jesse and his sons are also very aware of what is vegan and what is not, and most of their vegetarian food is vegan. They even have a daily, mostly vegan lunch buffet. I too have had nothing but trouble at the new Abu's. The new owner, who used to be in the restaurant during the first few months of his ownership, was very rude and has no customer service skills whatsoever. He was only renting the place and name from Abu's family. The last few days the restaurant has been closed with a sign on the door that I can't read from the street. Perhaps the family is taking over again? Let's hope...

what you save in money you lose in flavor - Edit

i guess i was expecting more than i received. this place was well reviewed through friends, and i have a feeling their meat dishes are excellent. my husband and i got a lentil soup, a 1/2 plate of saffron rice, a hummus plate, two fallafels, a rosewater lemonade and a baklava. With tip, it came to $18.80 and we were both full. Awesome. Unfortunately nothing tasted as it should. The lentil soup was bland and watery, the hummus was too thick and lacking flavor, the pita bread was very thin and easily breakable, the baklava was impossible to cut and eat. I did, however, really like the rice, lemonade and fallafel. It was overall not a regrettable experience, we just found ourselves asking where all the flavor and spice was. I guess it just wasn't what I'm used to. I will say this though, I will go back for the two fallafel sandwiches for $7.50, that is just too good to pass up.

Pros: cheap, vegan friendly, good portions

Cons: lacking flavor, small interior, not enough garlic :)

tiny treasure - Edit

Abu's is an old-time east side favorite. Their veggie food is really great - the sampler is the best to start with so you figure out what your favorites are. Rosewater lemonade is a must.

Pros: excellent veg food, perfect portions

Cons: very tiny space, you have to stare at the rack of lamb, sometimes slow service
