Great atmosphere, modern tasty food - Edit
Very popular Indian restaurant in a great modern but traditional setting. Staff all very friendly and helpful. Vegan options clearly labelled, modern take on authentic Indian dishes, focus on smoked flavours. The smoked broccoli was great as was the yellow lentil dahl. The onion barji were much nicer and freasher than you average take away! A really nice experience, quick service.

Vegan menu - Edit
Great to see this restaurant had a plant-based menu, although this wasnt really advertise - I only knew from reading previous reviews here.
Read moreThe signature Tandoori brocolli and roti were delicious.
For the portion sizes, I would say this place leans towards the more expensive side, but would definitely go again.
Pros: Vegan menu, Fast service, Friendly staff
Cons: Slightly expensive

Some misses but the hits are incredible - Edit
Another really lovely visit, staff asks about allergies and then brought me the plant menu unprompted. All servers made sure to clarify what was vegan when bringing dishes out and were really knowledgeable.
Read moreWe’ve been to Khai Khai a few times and I feel like I’ve managed to get the vegan order here down to a science.
Tandoori broccoli is absolutely the star of the whole meal, we order one each and I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t blown away.
Don’t bother with the biriani, it’s nothing special and there’s much better on the menu.
Tandoori broccoli, rice, yellow lentils (gorgeous), tandoori roti and onion bahji is absolutely the best meal you could get here as a vegan.

Very disappointing - Edit
Things didn't get off to a great start. We told them we were both vegan on entering the restaurant but were still given two regular omni menus and a single plant based menu. Trying to clarify if everything on the plant based menu was vegan the waitress said "yes, vegetarian and vegan". Both? One or the other? It wasn't clear.
Read moreThe bhaji starter was good but the beetroot tiki, described as a fritter, was just beetroot mush. Maybe just defrosted in a microwave but not crispy like a fritter at all. And tiny - two minute discs for £8.50 with no dip, salad or garnish.
For the mains we both chose the veg biryani - usually hard to go wrong with this and the other mains sounded a bit odd. All that arrived was two large pots of biryani rice. No curry sauce or veg curry. When we queried this they gave us a couple of small pots of raita that tasted odd. Luckily we'd ordered sides of dahl without which the rice would have been inedible.
A service charge was added (as it often is these days) but not explained and we weren't asked if we were ok with it.
For the next day we both felt a bit dodgy. Would not recommend.

Birthday meal - Edit
Went to Khai Khai for my birthday meal and it did not disappoint. The tandoori broccoli is some of the best broccoli i have tasted and I consider myself quite a connoisseur of broccoli.
Read moreBrilliant options with two vegan curries and plenty of small plates to try. No faux meat if that is your kind of thing (which for me, it usually is but it was not missed in this meal). It is a bit pricey but there is set meals during the day and they often partake in NE restaurant week. It is absolutely worth a visit. Lush atmosphere and attentive staff with welcoming customer service.
Pros: Tandoori Broccoli., Atmosphere , Great vegan choices
Cons: Pricey, No faux meat options

Delicious - Edit
Several vegan options, even a vegan dessert. Lots of very attentive staff, great atmosphere. Note: if you order the gunpowder chips (marked as vegan) the mayo that comes with it is not vegan. Also the menu is smaller at lunch time, there is more choice in the evening

Bridge on the river Khai - Edit
Splendid place. The vegan menu isn’t just for show, they take plant based dining seriously here. An open kitchen at the rear with chefs surrounded by fresh ingredients and spices is quite a sight as you dash past down to the washrooms. We sampled the 2022 Veganuary restaurant week menu at £20. I was hugely impressed. Onion and samphire bhajis, saag aloo, spicy lentils, rice and naan bread. Utterly delicious. They have a more extensive vegan menu which I will explore another day. #Veganuary

Like a special occasion - Edit
Really tasty food and memorable dishes. The broccoli from tandoori oven was the best! Enjoyed it all and would defo go back. We had 2 small plates, 2 smoke plates and 2 sides to come together and that was fine😄 The dips that came were great too especially a chilli garlic mayo with the gunpowder chips! Plenty of options on the menu for another visit as we can’t eat everything in one go!!!

Cons: Drinks expensive , Felt slightly rushed to order drinks and food
