Plakias, on the road to Kalypso, turn left after Oasis, Crete, Greece
We thought we landed in heaven
29 Jul 2012
We couldn't believe our luck. Our first night in Crete, in remote Plakias, we thought our chance of a vegan dinner was slim. Not only did we find Ifigenia, a lovely stroll from the village, but also, as we arrived, the hostess was just opening up a wonderful eclectic vegetarian buffet and, as it turned out, almost all vegan. Food delicious, very chilled out atmosphere, we felt like we were one of the locals.
Tip: I think Friday evening is buffet night, something well worth going out of your way for.

wholesome food, nice people

Dinner buffet is vegan except desserts, some are not vegan, please ask. Food is wholesome and tasty, price reasonable for an all-you-can-eat buffet. Maybe the taste is not great, but is a reflection of Portuguese food in general, nothing great but nourishing. Try the "meat" balls in tomato sauce with brown rice, as well as the broccoli with green leaves, yummy!

Friendly and helpful staff, try to avoid busy times like lunchtime if you want special attention. They sell a selection of healthy snacks like bean salads, pastries, and hot soup.
Uhuru has a long tradition in Oxford and caters for vegans all year long while other places are happy to reduce or even remove their vegan selection to put on display seasonal items such as those for Halloween or Christmas.
Things might be a bit more expensive than in Holland and Barrett or Tesco and Sainsbury's but you can be sure to find more variety and better attention in this independent shop than in big-chain supermarkets.
