Good vegan fusion restaurant

I really loved the atmosphere at Zest - it’s a very beautiful restaurant! The food was really good, but quite pricey for the portion you get. Still an amazing adress for vegan food in Ubud ☺️

Best restaurant in Ubud for "fusion" food

Definitely the most creative and tasty options in Bali. Many westernized or authentic versions of traditional dishes like sushi, carbonara, pizza, and burgers. Definitely not your option for "traditional" Indonesian food, but by far the best food I've had on the island and maybe in my foodie trips. Fair prices, many gluten free options, all servers speak great English.

Pros: Great taste, authentic takes on Western food, Fair price, Beautiful setting

Cons: No AC or fans, Closes early

Epic

Zest is incredible. Perched on what seems to be its own little Ubud hilltop, Zest occupies a commanding vantage point and has some great views of Ubud.

We were here a couple of times and we had a fantastic experience on both occasions.

The first time: we went for brunch – the breakfast burger is super delicious. The smoothie was nice and the home made fries were great too.

The second time: we went for lunch – we tried the Peking duck style platter. It was an experience. There were 3 kinds of mock meats, a dipping sauce, some gravy, and generous portions of salad greens and fresh veggies.

Just like the rest of Bali, the staff is warm and you get great value for your money.

Food was nice, but...

Zest has some amazing views and beautiful trees around, the wait staff were kind and the food we ordered was decent.

However, half of the menu wasn't available, we chose about four items each before being told what actually was available, so what we got wasn't really what we wanted. Also, the portion was quite small considering the price, especially for the burger (I had the fish style burger). My partner had the sushi, which was 8 pieces of one type, but no choice to have eg 4 pieces of two types, which would have made the plate less boring.

The drinks were good, and we didn't order dessert so no comment

Pros: Food tastes good, Great views

Cons: Expensive, Small portion sizes, Many menu items unavailable

Food as beautiful as the restaurant

I had to come back twice over a weekend with how good it was. The standout was the seaweed waffles and I look forward to coming back again.

A firm favorite

I ate here at least three times on my trip! It’s an extensive menu so you’re spoilt for choice. I had the pizza, cauliflower wings, jackfruit empanada (those are an absolute must!), potato and cheese balls, the pasta carbonara (best I’ve ever had!) and Ferraro rocher ice cream (sorcery how good it is!) great vibe for a lunch or dinner. Will definitely go back:)

Beautiful setting

Loved the breakfast stack but went back for lunch later in the week and didn't love the food so much... (Peking duck style pancakes) Great place to chill out, would defintiley go back and try the other dishes.

Amazing vibe

Lovely space. We tried the Peking ‘duck’ and pancakes and enjoyed this a lot. It was a full meal for two people. The menu is enormous so we look forward to coming back.

Most overrated place in Bali

Honestly one of the most overrated place in Bali.

Firstly the service is incredibly slow, the poor waiters are rushed off their feet. Hire more staff!!

Secondly, the food isn’t that good. The portions are on the small size, especially the pizza. The ‘sourdough’ base actually tasted like one of those ready made frozen bases you buy. The burger is fine but nothing that special. There are other places in Ubud to get better food and better service.

Don’t get the putine fries - disgusting. Overly sweet gravy on coconut tasting cheese on about 10 fries. Don’t waste your money.

We also were disappointed items were missing off the menu like the pasta.

The venue is nice and it’s great to see a plant based restaurant doing so well.

Good food but needs better service

So we actually came here twice during our time in Ubud but had different experiences each time. So the first time we came it was busy and they seated us at a shared table which was a bit strange and was quite hard to eat at as we were on a sofa and the food was on a low down coffee table in front of us so we had to bend over to eat. The drink selection was slightly disappointing as most of the cocktails/juices have quite random ingredients (who wants turmeric in a juice?) However, we quickly got over this as the food was too good for us to care! The carbonara sauce was really rich and tasty and the jackfruit empandas were incredible. I also had the peanut butter milkshake which was delicious! Because of how good the food was we decided to return but the second visit was a real let down. When we arrived we were told that because it was busy we would have to wait an hour to order food but we could have a drink, which was fine. We were sat quickly at a table and just waited with our drinks until we could order our meal. However whilst we were waiting after about 1 hour 2 tables were seated next to us and their food orders were taken straight away! The table next to us was actually served their food before we were even able to order ours even though we’d waited over an hour and we had to hunt down the staff to ask. We were also not able to order some of the food we wanted which after waiting for so long was a shame. The food we did get was food though - we had the duck inspired sharing platter (although it wasn’t anything like duck it was mushroom schnitzel and jackfruit sausage) which was really nice. We were also planning on getting pudding but because it has taken so long to be served we weren’t able to order anything else as it was too late. It was just a shame that the service let down the second night. You can’t make reservations after 7 pm which seems like a strange choice when they weren’t able to keep up with how busy the restaurant was! I would just recommend getting there earlier and definitely order the empanadas!

Lovely venue and menu, underwhelming food

The venue is great, the menu is extensive and has lots of interesting options. It's busy so it has a good atmosphere. The food could be better, some of it just wasn't that nice compared to what you expect before it arrives. The sushi tasted a bit funny. Under staffed, didn't give us the wine list so we thought it was another of ubuds dry restaurants, so we ordered soft drinks before realising we could get wine!

Pros: Lots of vegan options, New foods for vegans, Nice atmosphere and surroundings

Cons: Expensive, Short staffed, Food underwhelming

Disappointing

For such a hyped up restaurant in an amazing location with a large menu and so many good reviews this place really disappoints. I hate to rate a vegan restaurant so low but we ordered more than six dishes and the food was really well presented but tasteless. The vibe is very pretentious and service is slow. We waited almost 45 minutes to get served. Sad to say but I definitely wouldn’t go back.

Great food

Large and beautiful restaurant with tons of seating. We had to take off your shoes before we went into the restaurant. Great small plates to share, we enjoyed most of them. It is a little on the pricier side.

Amazing!

Probably one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. Went to Bali for three weeks and ended up going to Zest 2-3 times. The pho is AMAZING. I also tried one of the vegan sushis, the mushroom pizza, Poutine, one of the veggie burgers, and a few other items (went with a group) and every single item on the menu was really good. Good prices and amazing food and drinks. Menu wasn’t reliant on substitutes.

Pros: Delicious , Not reliant on substitutes, Unique flavors

It was okay...

The first time I visited this restaurant it was a busy afternoon, they did not have many of the items we wanted to try, as they ran out of ingredients. What I did have was tasty that day- the small smashed crispy potatoes, the moringa leaf braised in coconut water, the spinach mushroom and garlic, the sweet potato wedges with a dipping sauce and the taro chips with dipping sauce, and a pizza. The second time I was there, ordered some of the same things but the food was lacking flavour, the service was terrible, they ran out of ingredients again. It was also expensive for what I did get... last time.

Tasty and lovely decoration

Great menu with a large choice of dishes. Friendly staff and good service.
This restaurant would deserve 5 stars if the quantity of food was not so small...You must order a second dish if you want to be full. For this price you could expect more quantity (pizza or pasta are too small...)

Pros: Tasty and staff

Cons: Very small portion

Zest is the best!

I think this is my favorite Ubud restaurant. Ate here 3 days in almost as many days. Favorites were the Sargent pepper flatbread, zesty AF salad, sweet potatoes wedges, and Awakened cowboy. Also tried the Run, Piglet, Run which was good but the flatbread was better and the Jick Magger pizza (also good but Bella restaurant’s pizza was better). Love the ambiance here as well! A great place to relax or to work.

What was that?!

We've been travelling for one year in Asia and this place is DEFINITELY one of the best!! We were sooo blown away. We really love the concept: indonesian ingredients cooked like a western way. We ordered a balinease red wine, well we were skeptikal about the taste but this one was amazing! Strong flavors like we love. Then we ordered 2 mains: wrap 2.0 (mini cowboy) so good with all these flavors!!
The high priestess was also very good but if you already know what tempeh is, we suggest you to try something else cause we are used to cook it at home so we didn't really see the difference for this ingredient.
We ordered 4 desserts:
Bananas in pyajamas : just wow
Coconut pie: so perfect
Don't forget to have a look in the restaurant there are many desserts. We ordered there:
Gold digger: it's a chocolate bar available in mini version. Not a big fan, rather tasteless.
Peanut ball: Amazing!! It tastes like a snicker

We are so sad to be on a budget. Really wish to come there again one day :(
