Great Tofu Scramble

After living here for nearly four years, I finally got a chance to get up early on a weekday with my team to try out Zachary's. They are a local breakfast hot spot that gets lines out the door on weekends, so I was ready to see what the hype was about.

I went with The Basic Tofu with a couple of add-ons to really amp up my scramble. They recommended I go this route instead of ordering "The Tofu Mess" since they aren't able to do substitutions. My scramble was nicely seasoned and prepared and came with a slice of oat-molasses bread as their vegan friendly option. They even brought out a small amount of vegan butter for me to use as spread which was a really nice touch!

Their attention to detail when it comes to plant-based diners like myself was very welcomed. Overall, great breakfast at an established Santa Cruz staple made this one an easy 5-stars for me.

Pros: Attention to vegan condiments, Friendly staff

It should be a 5 Star review!

I love the fact that it has vegetarian, vegan and meals for non-vegetarian friends in an call building. The restaurant is going on 40 years now. Great service, excellent food and large portions.

Pros: Basic Tofu dish, Tofu Mess for those who have a bottomless stomach., Pricing

Cons: It can get a little noisy during the rush, They don't do dinner.

Amazing tofu scramble

The tofu scramble is vegan and you can add lots of add ons to it. Delicious.

omg every thing from scratch

I love this restaurant! Tons of choices to suit everyone in my diverse family! My vegetarian daughter loves all the vegetarian choices, and tofu swap outs. This place is rustic and wholesome but closes mid day- only breakfast and lunch. Can't get enough! Not just a restaurant but a full bakery too, I love taking home a loaf of the oatmeal molasses bread.

Pros: nice vibe, diverse staff, consistent

Cons: can get really busy, line on weekends

Good tofu scramble

More food than I needed! Ordered tofu scramble and added mushrooms and avocado. Very generous.
Home fries are cooked on earth balance as stated on the menu. Service was okay, but they were busy.

Pros: Plenty of food

Weren't very flexible

The tofu scramble option came with home fries and bread that wasn't vegan, when I asked that they substitute the bread for tomato slices they said the bread wasn't substitutable, but the home fries were. I asked what I could have that is vegan and they replied that they didn't have many vegan options and the server didn't offer up any substitutions, but stood there looking at me. So we paid for our teas and left.

One of the servers was a bit rude and when we were being seated that gave the experience a bad vibe from the start.

Best Vegan Scramble in SC

I live in Santa Cruz and have had tofu scrambles at pretty much every breakfast place that offers them; Zachary's is the best. I always get the tofu Mike's Mess without dairy and add avocado with a side of Miguel's salsa. It is delicious! Super flavorful and well seasoned. My non-vegan boyfriend also loves this place. Highly recommend!!

Pros: Delicious food

Cons: Not a lot of vegan options

If you have to eat here for some reason there are options- just super basic and unimaginative: only tofu scramble or a veggie burger. Do have soymilk for coffee.

Pros: you won’t starve, breakfast potatoes are good, 1990’s feel

Cons: limited options, bland
