cheap, delicious veggie food on guohua street - Edit

guohua street (國華街) , a food haven for omnivores, is a nightmare for vegans: meatballs, steamed buns with pig's tongue, beef-straight-from-the-cow soup, eel noodles, oyster omelettes are among some of the delicacies locals and tourists flock there to enjoy.

even as not-too-strict vegetarians, when requesting stall owners to leave out the meat/seafood from a particular dish, we were often told that their spring rolls, omelettes, etc were cooked with pig's oil.

it was the friendly staff at xiaojuan mifen (小卷米粉) who introduced us to xiu an vegetarian food stall (修安素食). we were travelling with two omnivores, and xiaojuan mifen was one of the stalls recommended by our hostel owner. just as we were ready for another round of watching our companions eat (the soup base contains seafood), xiaojuan staff suggested that we order food from a vegetarian stall a few doors away and bring it over so that all of us could have a meal together. i'm not sure if this is something other stalls are willing to accommodate, but if you're in a group of non-veggies it's worth asking if you can do that.

xiu an serves a variety of simple, delicious, pre-made food, which you dish out on a plate and the owner quotes you a price. he was gracious enough to let us bring the plates over to the mifen stall. the food was yummy, with enough veggie options, and the vermicelli was light and not too oily.

i think i saw another vegetarian stall nearby, to the right of and behind the corner bean jelly store (修安扁擔豆花) next to xiu an vegetarian.

Pros: tasty, cheap
