Serves meat, vegan options available. Bar offering a food menu that includes several marked vegan choices such as cauliflower wings, vegan burger (w/ vegan cheese), and a thai stir-fry. Open Mon-Sun 11:30am-1:30am.
We ate at the tavern on a recent trip to Vermont, and although the atmosphere was pleasant, and the service was friendly, the food was not great. We started with the poutine and cauliflower wings. The poutine was watery and flavorless. (check out Saus in Somerville, MA for pretty good vegetarian poutine) Vegetarian gravy is tricky, and it needs to have flavor or what's the point? The wings (bites) were deep fried and overly sweet. I liked the first one, but it was all texture, and you couldn't taste cauliflower at all. We didn't finish those. My son ordered the black bean veggie burger, and wouldn't eat it, which is very unusual. So I ended up eating that, but it was not fun. I appreciate that this was a "veggie" burger and not a science project but it was way too mushy and tasted too much like black beans (I know). If you're going serve veggie burgers, don't make them mushy. I think the grace period for that is over. The onion rings were good. We also had the faro salad. This also tasted okay at first, but it didn't really work as a dish, and we might as well have eaten all the ingredients separately. The beer was good. I think meat-based restaurants that make a point of offering vegetarian options should try harder to get it right.
They now have a local veggie burger from Vermont Bean Crafters instead of beyond burgers and have vegan cheese and vegan basil aïoli that was super yummy. The server offered the vegan cheese to add to the burger (it wasn’t listed on the menu) and was super nice about making sure everything we ordered was prepared vegan. The Brussels sprouts are yummy and you can swap vegan aoli for regular with fries. They had another eggplant sandwich that could easily be made vegan and I think one other dinner option. Overall we were wanting bar food, and the burgers, fries and salad were all very tasty and the service was good. Hoping they add more vegan options and a vegan poutine!
Very limited vegan options: salad, a few appetizers, beyond burger or stir fry. The prices are quite steep for the food and the staff often advises against vegan options if they aren’t aware of your vegan lifestyle. The atmosphere is casual enough to bring a family but fancy enough for a date.
