Friendly Stop in the Polar Bear Capital 🐻‍❄️

We were in Churchill for three days and ate at Tundra Inn twice. Right now, they only have one vegan entrée on the menu — the homemade veggie burger — but be sure to ask for it to be made vegan, as it’s not vegan as is. They also have a large salad with vegan dressing available.

Just note that they use the same fryer for fries and meat products, so keep that in mind if that’s a concern for you.

The best part of our visits was the chef’s kindness and hospitality — he personally came out to talk to us about what could be made vegan and even offered to go across the street to pick up chickpeas to recreate a curry that used to be on the menu. It was such a thoughtful and heartfelt gesture.

They also recently opened a sister restaurant (called Ptarmigan) across the street that has a few vegan options and a separate fryer for fries — definitely worth checking out too.

Decent food, great portion sizes

I tried the burger and it wasn’t anything special but it was still tasty and it was nice to have that vegan option. The staff were very friendly and the portion sizes were huge - I couldn’t finish it. There was also the option of a curry with jasmine rice which sounded really nice!

Best, and possibly only, place in town

Since the last review is from 2019, it's worth posting an update.

We were here 4 days and ate pretty much every meal at the Tundra inn.
I'm not sure if any others in town have vegan options but the Dancing Bear close by doesn't and others didn't have very promising menus on their websites.

We heard repeatedly that the Tundra Inn is the best food in town and that seems to be the case although it's basically pub food.

The place operates thanks to an enthusiastic crew of mostly Aussie ladies. Service is cheerful, if a tad slow when big groups crowd the room, and every staff member knew what was vegan or could be adapted or asked the chef to help when needed. So overall excellent.

The borealis burger seems to be famous around town and is a dependable option for any meal.
Soups of the day will warm you up and at least one is always vegan. They were excellent.
The Tundra salad is a nice change from all the hearty stuff - finally some fiber.
Cauliflower bites and hummus dips were less interesting but did their job.
Vegetarian curry was good but very filling.

Sadly no desserts, except occasionally sorbet.
Soft drinks have free refills.
Portions are large and the food isn't light so we ended up sharing a lot.

Breakfast was a bit of a letdown. Few options apart from toast and fruit. The chef did fry a few veggies for us yet even that was very oily.

In conclusion, it was great to have this place in Churchill. We were a bit bored with the menu after 3 days but that would probably be the case anywhere.

Pros: Good service, helpful and knowledgeable staff , Several tasty vegan options

Cons: No desserts , Not exactly healthy

The best vegan place in town

With only four resturaunts in town and I visited all of them, this is the only one worth going to if you are looking for vegan food. They have a great borealis burger which comes with a homemade veggie patty, a hummus salad wrap and a chickpea curry. All of these were delicious especially the burger. They also had a vegan daily soup option. The staff were very accommodating to dietary requirements.

Pros: Good food at lunch and dinner

Cons: Need more options at the breakfast buffet.
