A Real Queen’s Retreat

Tucked away at the end of a simply stunning lane, just a stone’s throw from the castle, it was nigh on impossible to resist the allure of this charming little spot. Sometimes a location does half the work before you’ve even stepped through the door, and this was certainly one of those occasions.
The bar staff were eccentric, but in the very best possible way - friendly, welcoming and possessing that wonderfully unfiltered, salt-of-the-earth charm that makes a place feel instantly comfortable. I even found myself being chatted up at the bar in the early afternoon. Still got it, apparently.
Taking full advantage of the fabulous setting and glorious weather, I settled out front to enjoy the surroundings. This was not quite as simple as it sounds, thanks to the rather dramatic incline. In fact, the angle of the table meant I was forced to drink with a certain urgency, lest my pint slowly slide to its demise after being encouraged by its own condensation. That’s my excuse anyway, and I’m sticking with it.
Having only really popped in for a drink, I wasn’t expecting haute cuisine, but the food that arrived was far better than it had any right to be. The falafel, in particular, was a genuine surprise. Fresh, flavourful and beautifully textured, it far exceeded expectations and was comfortably better than some versions I’ve eaten from specialist restaurants in the Middle East.
The hummus and pita delivered exactly what was required - simple, satisfying and a perfect accompaniment to the aforementioned beverage. The patatas bravas offered something a little more traditional and no-nonsense, while the spicy cauliflower followed a similar path: unfussy, well executed and packed with enough flavour to keep things interesting.
Was this a revolutionary culinary experience? No. Was it exactly what I wanted in that moment? Absolutely. Good food, a great pint, wonderful surroundings and entertaining bar staff made for a thoroughly enjoyable visit.
The ego boost provided by the young gentleman at the bar may have swayed my thoughts ever so slightly, but regardless, I’d happily return - whether to explore more of the menu or simply to enjoy another beverage in such a charming setting.
