Nice atmosphere - Edit
I liked the decor and atmosphere of The Kitchen. I like that they have some vegan options. But I was disappointed that although they had vegan scones, there was no vegan spread for them. So the scone I had was very dry- why have a vegan scone if you can't offer a spread or coconut cream to go with it? That was disappointing as I love scones and it might have been nice had there been something to spread on it. Unfortunately they had already warmed it up for me and I had already paid for it before them saying there was no vegan spread.
Read moreAlso apparently they don't do soy so no soy milk for coffee. Not sure if it is some anti soy thing which I am always dubious when people are anti soy or if they had another reason. They do offer other plant milks.
I might not have minded so much if the serving person hadn't been negative. Asking if there was a vegan spread or soy was met with a flat 'No' each time and no smile or explanation which was off putting. I might have ordered from the menu more to try but was put off by this and didn't want to be told "no' to again if I asked the wrong question, so had a proper lunch at East St instead and that was lovely and of course, East St is 100% vegan.
It is great they have some vegan options but maybe they haven't though them through. Vegan scones without spread? Hmm.
Pros: Nice decor, Good atmosphere, Some vegan options
Cons: being told 'No' , no spread for scones, no soy milk

Yummy! - Edit
They seem to have increased their vegan options since the other reviews. They had vegan waffles, vegan burger, vegan breakfast amongst other vegan menu items as well as a large selection of vegan slices and some vegan counter food and smoothies. We both had the burger and it was delicious, if a little heavy on the sauerkraut.

Nice food, more options please!! - Edit
I was happy to see a couple of vegan options. My toasted sandwich was really nice. I think it would be even better with just a few more options for vegans. Staff however were very friendly and it was a cute place.

Very limited vegan options - Edit
Only 2 items on menu are vegan... Very over priced, had a cake and a coffee, possibly the worst coffee I've ever had.

Going backwards 🤕 - Edit
Had the pea and avo smash made vegan which was okay but since I came here last they have removed the vegan breakfast, I think they should be adding MORE vegan options not taking them away...

Lunch is limited, the burger is bad. - Edit
Besides half decent quinoa and green pea salads for lunch there was only a pitifully messed up tasteless paleo/GF "burger". Not sure how does this make this place a vegan friendly? How much sugar/deserts high one has to be to give this place any approval. A total waste of the time and money for a hungry person.

Good food for a range of diets - Edit
My wife is vegan and she can eat at least half of what’s on the menu. They also cater for many diets ranging from raw to paleo. Staff are great and we’ve become regulars.

Around half of their breakfast & lunch menu options are vegan with a good range of sweet & savoury vegan cabinet options too.

Half the menu is vegan - Edit
Great cafe with a casual yet sophisticated feel. Half the menu options were vegan and also one vegetarian option making it majority plant-based. Food very tasty and the best kumara chips we’ve found. Kids corner with activities and nice wooden high chair available. Interesting hot drinks (e.g. coconut chai) and fruit/green smoothies. Reasonable prices for quality, location, style.
