Deeply disappointing and vastly overpriced, stay away

During our week in Greece, we ate at four fine-dining restaurants, two of which had actual Michelin stars, so I think I have a fairly good idea of what could be expected in terms of food, service and price from such a place. Unfortunately the "Athenian House" failed on all of them - and all in our little group agreed and were similarly unhappy about the experience.

The most important: The food was simply not convincing. For instance, the tomato "carpaccio" was more of a tomato salad that was piled up in a cube, no nuances in taste, no layers of flavour, not even good tomatoes. Or the vegan baklava I would have given a top grade had it been peanut butter, but for a dessert it was too much peanut butter and too little anything else, just ending up heavy in my stomach. Some of the other courses were perhaps OK, but nothing was "wow" or memorable. Certainly not worth the 170 EUR. (In comparison, at the other three fine-dining places we ate during our week in Greece, we paid only half as much and the food was at least twice as good.)

But also the service was really poor. Staff was giving each other annoyed looks behind the back of guests, the cutlery was not changed or only randomly, we got gluten-free bread even tough we hadn't asked for this option as we don't like such bread, most courses came out in fast succession and at one point two courses were brought at the same time, leaving us in a very rushed feeling, the waiters reached across the table to serve the plates instead of doing two additonal steps to come around the table (but then they spent time to loudly chat with the couple at the neighbouring table who was already raucous and busy sampling the drinks menu), etc.

That the music was too loud for the setting and that there was no dress code whatsoever (beach shorts, Birkenstocks, garish shirts, everything was there) all added to the negative experience, as was the fact that the place was quite cramped and dark (which meant we didn't even see some of the food we ate as it was moreover served in deep dark bowls - instead of being presented nicely on a plate). That we got a little tacky key ring when we paid didn't really improve our impression, either; getting good food and service was what we had hoped for.

In short, perhaps it was just a bad day for the kitchen and service staff there, but I'd certainly not come back, even if I was invited; there are much better places on the island.

Terrific dinner and view

This was a welcome upscale dining experience after enjoying some of the more casual restaurants in Santorini. The five-course tasting menu included the lightest falafel I’ve ever tasted and panna cotta to end the meal. Tip: there is a typo on the menu, and the chocolate cake is not vegan.

Pros: Clearly marked vegan items , Great view, Good wine and cocktail menu
