Not what I hoped

I was very excited to come here with my wife as I love cooking and the reviews are so positive. However the experience wasn't what I'd hoped.

When we arrived we were greeted warmly by the chef and her colleagues. I thought it was a really nice space - clean, airy and modern. We were given an apron each and I noticed that they had the aprons for sale along with other bits such as tote bags, caps and cookbooks. I liked the designs and we were talking about buying some of the different products.

We waited for the others in our class to arrive and then were given an introduction by the chef, who explained how it would all work and about the owner and the plant based nature of the cookery school. However, she did make a comment during this about how she could tell us how to adapt the dishes to include meat and cheese if we wanted to, and also called veganism a diet. I thought this was a strange comment given we were in a vegan class so why would we want to add animal products? Even as non-vegans surely the food was going to be tasty and so why would you want to change the recipes to include animal products anyway? Perhaps not a big deal but it just felt like almost a talking down of veganism to me and made me uncomfortable.

We were then told to stand up and discuss with the others which dishes we wanted to cook. This wasn't really a discussion and just turned into more of a musical chairs type situation where everyone just moved quickly to the place with the dish they wanted to cook. Again perhaps not a big deal but it just wasn't what I was expecting and felt like more of a competition than a discussion.

At this point it also became clear that the class had too many people. There were 13 of us in the class but honestly I would say the space wasn't suited to more than about 8. Our work spaces were very tight and there was so little space I found myself chopping vegetables around bowls and other bits that were also on my chopping board as I didn't have enough space to put them elsewhere. We also were just given recipe cards and then just kind of left to get on with it. The chef was around giving us pointers but again because there were so many people in the class her attention was very split and a lot of the time I felt like we were more just preparing a dish on our own rather than in a cooking class learning skills.

(review continued in comments…)

Pros: The food we made was tasty, The cooking space is clean and modern

Cons: Overcrowded class, Stressful experience, Not much guidance

(Continued from main review…) I also felt like when there were interactions with the chef it sometimes felt like a criticism of the way we were doing things rather than guidance even though we were just left to get on with it. I think she did her best but honestly there were just too many people. We felt immensely overwhelmed and found it all very stressful to the point where we were very close to leaving and just going to get lunch somewhere instead. We did decide to stay and the food did end up being tasty, but I can't say we enjoyed the experience and if I’d known what it would've been like we wouldn't have come. We also didn't end up buying any of the products because I just didn't feel positively about SOYBIRD anymore, which was sad.

The other reviewers clearly had a better time than us so I don't know if they were in smaller classes or just had different expectations to us, but for me it felt more like a very busy dinner party that we had to prep for on our own rather than a cookery class, and that wasn't for us.

A lovely experience

So much fun!! It was a little different than I expected insofar as you only get to make 2-3 of the dishes, though on reflection it would have literally taken all day if you had to make the full menu so this is totally understandable. Everything was delicious and you are given lots of wine and beer throughout the experience, making it excellent value for money. I was surprised how few of the other attendees were vegan but they also agreed the food was amazing! Thank you Konstantinos and everyone at Soybird😄

Lots of fun!!

I did this class with my non-vegan friend and we both had a lot of fun and really enjoyed the food! (She even said it may have been her favorite meal in Athens.) Even as inexperienced chefs, the class was easy to follow and the cook, Alexandra, helped everyone along the way. The only con was that we didn't get to make all the dishes. Even so, we did get to make 4 different dishes and got recipes for the rest and it would probably be unrealistic time-wise for everyone to make everything.

I would recommend for vegans and non-vegans alike looking for a fun cooking experience! It was 110% worth the money. And you can take leftovers home!

Pros: Great taste of greek food , Fun

Excellent taste of Greece

Lovely experience, I went solo and there were 12 of us in the class in total with two teachers.
We worked as two teams of 6 and made a feast between us. Each 'pair' worked on a variety of dishes and then came together at the end to eat what we made.
Between us we made a whole variety of Greek treats and created a tasty feast. This was more of an experience rather than skill based class, but I learnt lots of lovely Greek recipes and an amazing simple almond feta recipe, which I'll be making again.
Overall great, the only thing was not really seeing how some of the recipes were actually made, but we'll be emailed the recipes too, and nothing seemed that complex, so I'm sure manageable solo. I can't wait to try some of the dishes again. The fava was my favourite!
Our group was a mix of vegans and non vegans and I would say an experience for all!

We also had wine, beer and ouzo along with our experience and meal

Pros: engaging hosts, value for money, lovely experience

Excellent experience

We enjoyed learning about some of the Greek items we have been eating in cafes such as fava and spinach pie. We heard about all the dishes before starting and then we were all given tasks. We prepared fava, spinach pie and a pudding while others prepared dishes such as moussaka, tatsiki and bread rings. Alexandra was our teacher and was very patient, helpful and relaxed. I don’t know how she managed to supervise all the different dishes being prepared at the same time. We were all kept occupied right up until it was time to sit down and eat our feast. Wine was included (there was a beer option). There were 11 of us. Most of the group were not vegan. There were four groups from different countries - UK, USA and Germany. The class was in English. The food was all delicious and it was a very enjoyable experience. The recipes will be emailed to us afterwards so that we can recreate the dishes at home. Highly recommend.

Vegan Greek Cooking Class w/ Alexandra

Alexandra was absolutely delightful! She couldn’t have been more friendly , patient, gracious & helpful. - I was the only actual vegan out of the 5 in the class.
The Greek food we prepared & ate was “to die for”! And Everyone was very impressed! (This definitely ranks as a HIGHLIGHT of my time in Athens! Right up there with the famous historical sites, Soybird Vegan Cooking School should NOT be Missed!)
I can’t stress enough what a wonderful experience as well as an unbelievable learning & eating experience!!!
The 3 hr class passed so quickly - Don’t Miss Taking a Class while you’re in Athens! ( They have other classes besides a Greek menu.)
Thank you again Alexandra, for a wonderful evening! MaryAnn

Pros: 1. Alexandra’s friendly teaching & professionalism, 2. Moussaka , delicious dips, 3. The delightful dessert

Cons: 1.NONE!…A definite TREAT!

Great experience AND meal!

I’ve always loved Greek food so was thrilled my time in Athens aligned with their traditional cooking class. We had a pretty large group (12, I think) of mixed ages and nationalities. The class was fully hands-on, with groups each cooking different dishes. My main takeaway was “add more olive oil.” The best part, of course, was sitting down to enjoy the feast we’d prepared, complete with wine and takeaway boxes. Highly recommend if you’re in town and looking for a way to learn and eat at the same time!

We love, what we do

We love food and we love vegan food. We'll show you how good Greek food tastes in our GREEK TRADITIONAL cooking course. There are many dishes that are vegan anyway and we have veganized others. We will also prepare feta cheese from almonds in every course, it is always a highlight. We look forward to your visit to our cooking school in Athens.
