Little one-woman cafe - Edit
My partner and I went here for lunch. The menu was very limited so we both got the curry bowl with our choice of toppings. Though many of the photos show chickpeas, pumpkin, corn, colorful sweet potatoes, and other items those were not on today's chalkboard list. As we waited we enjoyed free table water and looked around at the cool converted plastic building. I did notice a worrisome amount of ants around the dining area by the kitchen, but the food seemed to be unaffected. When we got our curry bowls they each came with a small complimentary cup of broth. It was salty but tasty. The bowl themselves had a DIY-assembly. The toppings were prepared, either steamed or fried, without seasoning so they had little-to-no flavor. The flavor came from the yummy curry mixture on top of the rice. Unfortunately it was difficult to incorporate the large pieces of vegetable into the mix and they did not soak up the flavor well. Still the meal was fairly filling and healthy, and for 85 baht each, not bad.

UPDATE: new dishes added - fried rice and summer rolls with Japanese seasoning!
Read moreVegan restaurant serving healthy whole food rice bowls, sides and variety of drinks. HCLF fans will be happy because you can select oil-free toppings. Food is simple but yummy. For those who find it too bland, they have spices and sauces available. Price is very reasonable for a vegan restaurant. Note there's no A/C, it's an open area with fans and some protection from rain. Interesting design made from recycled materials, they don't have single-use plastic and are eco-friendly. Like mentioned below, brown rice or rice-berry option would be nice. But it's definitely 5 stars for the lack of alternatives in this area.

Sweet cafe but limited choice - Edit
This newly opened cafe is near where I live in the Nimman area which has a dearth of cheaper Vegan options so I was keen to check it out. Samata has a lovely vibe, with recycled furniture and a very cute cat! Sadly the food was disappointing. I ordered a 'select your own' curry bowl, which relies on about 3/4 rice, a few spoonfuls of lentil-type curry and then 'toppings', most of which are heavily fried and even battered. I did have baked pumpkin and some sweetcorn but few fresh veg options. Free filtered water though.

Lovely bowls in peaceful setting. - Edit
I had the rainbow bowl and it was a good mix of curry, steamed veg and crunch from the tempura. Only downside is the bowls are made with white rice so lack the substance brown would add. This is why I only gave 4 stars and not 5. Good to have something different from the other options in town.

Cozy cafe off the beaten path - Edit
What a hidden gem! It’s a little difficult to find at first (on a side street behind Maya Mall), but worth it! The owner, Ribbon, is so friendly and warm, the cafe is mostly outdoors and really cozy. And the CURRY BOWLS are amazing. So cheap, and so filling. Lovely place to grab some food or spend a few hours. Definitely check this place out if you’re in Chiang Mai!

My new 2nd Home - Edit
When I found Samata on Happy Cow I just thought I would try it out and probably next day go on for another one in the area. But I loved this restaurant so much since the first arrival when I got welcomed by ukulele music that I came back again and again. And we see a community developing around this place. The curry bowls are super delicious, healthy and cheap! What a wonderful world😄
