Delicious, great service

The tadka dal and chana masala are excellent! We also got the whole wheat bread (roti?), rice, a Taj Mahal beer, and my vegetarian daughter got a mango lassi. All around great!

Pros: Tasty, Quick service , Clean restaurant

Indian Buffet is Back in Santa Cruz

Back in 2020, the very last meal I had out before we subsequently went into lockdown was actually at Royal Taj's lunch buffet. Fast forward a couple of pandemic years and a new sense of direction for my health, I was excited to se that they've finally brought their buffet back as of March 2023.

For $18, you can enjoy the only Indian lunch buffet that is offered in the Santa Cruz area. Initially, it would appear that they're offering half of what they used to back in the day. While some items are gone, they've ultimately prepared less at a time, but it guarantees that the food will be fresher if it's a busy lunch day.

My vegan friends - there is enough here to enjoy. I chowed down on their yellow dal, chana masala, and a vegetable/pepper stir-fry. There's also potato pakora, rice, a simple salad of lettuce and carrots, and cantaloupe/watermelon for dessert. I wish the curries had a bit more kick and that there were more than just potato pakoras, but I happily ate what I ate.

They only offer naan as a bread option. I asked if they could prepare some roti for me instead but told me they had run out (...how is that possible?) Despite having no naan, they were kind enough to offer me papadum (crispy flat bread) which was very much appreciated.

Overall, the buffet was good and I'm glad they've brought it back. Decent price overall but is worthwhile to have access to a variety of items.

Pros: Vegan marked items in lunch buffet, Items on general menu can be veganized
