mediocre food and bad service - Edit

Unfortunately my experience here was not good.
To begin I ordered their "cold pressed juice" which came out wrong and also came out with chunks of carrots. It was more like a smoothie so I had to ask for it to be filter out pieces.
We the had "nachos" which aren't really nachos. It's a side of store bought salsa and some olives.
Then the entrees came. The curry lentil stew was poor tasting and the polenta incredibly oily
The veggie strudel and the couscous were ok. If you absolutely need to stop and eat there which was our case, get that.
We were never given silverware as promised and no napkin in sight.
The place was super dead so there is no excuses for that. Would not recommend.
The total for nachos 2 juices and 2 entrees , 29 €. Not worth it.

Chaotic - Edit

Stuff not that nice. One of the girls had no clue about the menu. I wanted the polenta dish but then I was informed they do not have polenta anymore. The alternative was a lentil salad with couscous. I asked if it was served warm or cold since it was really cold in Lisbon that day - they told me it was cold. So I ended up eating a soup, which they did not know of what it was made. It was nothing special so sorry for my bad recession.

Pros: Homemade cakes, Place inside, Prices ok

Cons: Bad stuff, Lack of dishes shown in the menu

Very tasty - Edit

I had the satvic masala dosa and I did not regret it. It was absolutely tasty.

For dessert, we shared the chocolate salami and some sort of chocolate pudding with cookies served in a cup. I was glad to be able to sample a vegan version of the popular salami, and it was pretty good. I much preferred though the chocolate pudding with cookies, which, oddly enough, reminded me of the ice cream+oreo cake my grandmother used to make.

The waitress was very nice.

Pros: friendly staff

Cosy small café - Edit

This is a small café with a small changing menu. The food is good, but nothing special. We had a pumpkin curry with brown rice and fresh juices. The laid-back atmosphere and friendly staff contribute to a pleasant stay.

It is a nice place to go when you are in the area, when visiting the Castle or the wonderful viewpoint Miradouro da Graca!

Pros: Vegan food near the Castle!, Nice staff, homely atmosphere

Good but wouldn't go again - Edit

A nice calm space and relaxed vibe.
Interesting options on the menu and loads of choice for alcohol.

The soup & main red bean curry dish I had were great with a lot of flavor but the cheesecake dessert was pretty tasteless and the meal portions were kinda on the small side. Also noticed the American tourists next to me were a bit disappointed at their nachos order where the nachos were just store bought crisps with a small side of tomato salsa.

If you go make sure you have cash because it's cash only and I had to leave my ID at the restaurant then walk up a huge hill to get to the nearest ATM to be able to pay lol

Updated from previous review on 2016-11-24

Pros: Interesting menu choices , Nice vibe , Good coffee

Cons: Not very flavourful, Small portions , Cash only - ATM is far away

Nice place, food average - Edit

During our visit at the Princesa do castelo the staff was friendly and we did'nt have to wait long.
But as many others wrote before, the nachos with hummus didn't taste very good - funny, everbody orders them ;)
The main dish was ok but the seasoning was a bit strange, it didn't really taste good, though there was a lot of vegetables and spices put together...
The dessert was good!

Pros: laid back atmosphere

Good to see somewhere vegan - Edit

Eating vegan in Lisbon isn't the easiest task so it is nice to come across places like this where you know you're going to get food.
The food wasn't special but it did the job.

We had soup (2.90) and Fagioli (8.50) followed by a slice of chocolate salami (1.50) and a bowl of "sweet treat" (2.90).

Whilst travelling around Portugal I saw lots of Chocolate Salami but never saw another vegan version, so that was good to try.

Pros: Fully vegan

Cons: Not many vegan versions of portuguese dishes.

Nothing special - Edit

We had nachos with hummus and olives. Nachos were purchased, hummus average, olives was OK. Smoothie slightly mashed. We had rice with beans and vegetable anything special for the price. Chocolate pudding was great.
Staff forget smile. No greatings at leaving.

Pros: puding

Cons: staff, smoothie, price

Bad Service - Edit

We visited here on our trip to Lisbon but were really disappointed.

After an hour of waiting for food, we asked if they had forgotten our order, and the waitress only asked what we had ordered again and ignored the fact they had forgotten our order.

The food was ok when it finally arrived but not convinced it was vegan! We noticed the sign said vegetarian on our way out, so might be worth checking if actually vegan.

I would say there are nicer and friendlier places to go in Lisbon which has generally been great to eat out in! :)

A lovely lunch - Edit

I really enjoyed this small vegan restaurant. It is tucked into the winding streets around the São Jorge Castle and is a perfect place to eat before or after your visit to the castle. The food was delicious and the ambiance was cute & cozy. The apple strudel dessert was amazing! Service was good. This is definitely worth checking out!

Pros: food, location, ambiance

Just good food & high prices - Edit

The restaurant is really small. The menu is somehow big, and lot of vegan food to choose from, the food is nice but that's all, i've seen better for lower prices.
The staffs were really nice to talk to :)
We really enjoy our stay in the street of Lisboa.

Pros: lot of choices, happy staff, nice location

Cons: too much expensive, seats are not comfortable

By submitting this post you agree to HappyCow Terms

Too expensive, but nice desserts - Edit

The food was ok, but nothing special. The menu contains only few different dishes. We really liked the desserts. Unfortunately the main dishes as well as the desserts are really expensive for what you get. There was only one table outside.

Best meal in 2 weeks - Edit

Very friendly people with a nice small restaurant. we had our best meal in 2 weeks we are staying in Portugal. lot of sight seeing spots around. can't imagine a better spot for a great meal

Pros: castel near there. many vegan dishes and sweets.

Cons: I don't found any negativitys there

By submitting this post you agree to HappyCow Terms

Not recommendable - Edit

Very poor and expensive food. The nachos are purchased at the supermarket and outrageously expensive.
I've read many complaints that use animal ingredients and do not report.
Do not accept card payments and do not report it on the menu, we complained about this and one of the waiters was really arrogant.

Cons: Arrogant, Bad food, doubtful

Best Meal Ever! - Edit

We had lunch here last Friday and it was definitely the best Indian Vegan meal we both have ever eaten. We had the Indian Lentils with Cauliflower (Sattvic/GF) and there was a different taste in almost every bite. We also had the Raw Strawberry Cheesecake which was lovely as well. The Organic Gluten Free Beer was a nice surprise as I've never had this before. A superb beer from Czech Republic! We live two hours away but will travel to Lisbon just to eat here. We can't wait to go back for another! Thank you :-)

Pros: Savory Food, Atmosphere, Staff

Service was good, food was good, cute place - Edit

I agree with a former review: food is not mind blowing, but I would come here often if I lived nearby. And the place is cute and it´s worth walking here because you will see nice narrow streets on the hill on the way.

It´s nice that the only baked good apple strudel was vegan.

Pros: good food, cute place, interesting area

Interesting restaurant - Edit

I had some portuguese beans plate and it was really nice. I was surprised by some of the ingredients in the sides which made the thing very nice.

Nachos and Aloe juice could really improve. Price is a little high for the area and the size of the portion.

This place has interesting food, but as someone said it wasn't mindblowing.

good food, bad service - Edit

Enjoyed the chickpea and lentil dishes. Sadly the service was terrible the day we went. We were standing inside with the one server walking past us 4 times without acknowledging. The rest of our dinner was the same. I can understand they were busy, but a smile and acknowledgement go along way, and probably would have saved her going back and forth so often.

Friendly staff, cosy cafe - Edit

Cosy cafe with very friendly staff.
The 'nachos' as a starter are nice, but they are more tortilla chips than nachos from the oven. We had delicious gluten free beer, Celia, and a curry-style main course. I would recommend this for a date, since you can sit together very nicely.

Pros: Vegan options, Nice beers , Nice location

Good food, very relaxing staff - Edit

We had dinner there as The Food Temple was full. The place is nicely decorated, with a giant mushroom and a starry ceiling. The food was good, with a special mention for the raw chocolate and ginger cake. What we especially enjoyed was the calmness of the staff. It made for a very relaxing experience, which reminded me of some places I ate in buddhist monasteries.

Pros: Very relaxing staff, Cool and funky decoration, Good desserts

Cons: Food is good but not mindblowing

Very nice place with incredible vegan desserts - Edit

I was there three times during my first visit to Lisbon, the place has a really nice atmosphere, joyful decorations and friendly staff, everything I had was remarkably good, but the desserts, oh, boy, the desserts, especially the tiramisù (first since I became vegan), were amazing.

Healthy and tastefull - Edit

A nice and cozy place filled with positivity! The restaurant made a choice to go for a few, good quality, plates instead of quantity!
You can taste this in their plates :) I think that it's more healthy than you can imagine!

Pros: Good quality, Cheap, but not to cheap (I mean: fair price), Nice and relaxed atmosphere

Cons: It's not realy in the centre, but the walk is it t

Duvidoso - Edit

Friendly place - Edit

Overall cozy place with friendly staff. They offered different gluten free foods and we had a good indian dahl and a moussaka with tofu and for dessert a fruit plate with soy whipped cream. Nothing to complain about!

Pros: Friendly staff, Cozy place , Gluten free options

Yummy autumn salad - Edit

I have visited this place in Oct '15. The menu is not massive but fresh and tasty, I chose the autumn salad which was delicious. Also the selection of juices and beers is good. One thing, I was hoping to find something typical portuguese in a vegan version, but the food is interenational with big indian influence.

Pros: Location, Good vibe, Freshness and quality

Cons: Lack of portuguese influence on the menu

Lovely vegan restaurant, much better than Terra! - Edit

While "disappointment" would be a euphemism for what we felt at the utterly terrible vegetarian restaurant Terra, Princesa Do Castelo had positive surprises in store for us.

The staff was very friendly and fast (not just compared with the nasty, slow-witted people Terra employs). Though the visual presentation could use some work, the food was very tasty and low priced.

In stark contrast to Terra's off-putting, ill-tasting buffet, the dishes here had a temperature adequate for human consumption. They also come in a good variety, both in the savoury and the sweet section.

If you're taking a walk around the beautiful Alfama district, make sure to visit this lovable little place. And don't make the mistake to stumble into Terra, except if you have a wish to be served (or not to be served, which is equally possible) by bad-tempered staff who have no business working in the restaurant industry in the first place.

Pros: Friendly staff, Tasty vegan food!, Not Terra!!!

the best vegan in town - Edit

during our stay in Lisbon (sept-oct '15) we ate here almost every day. It's a very nice little place with a very friendly staff (who all speak English)and great vegan food at a fair price. The (short) menu changes every day (starters & desserts stay the same). They also serve fantastic fresh fruit juices wich you can combine as you wish, delicious ! make sure to visit this place when in beautiful Lisbon, it's easy to find in the Alfama district, just follow antique tram n°12.

Pros: great food, very affordable, friendly staff

By submitting this post you agree to HappyCow Terms

Small place and tasty meal - Edit

In the near of a famous vielen Spot and the tram 28.
It is a small and familiar place in mouraria.
Good music and the possibility to take a rest of your "Hard"Touristik Tour ;)
I had a stew with lentils and okra. It was delicous.
You will enjoy.

Pros: friendly staff, good value, Good portions and taste

Cons: Small place when too many guests

Great vibe and great food - Edit

We stumbled upon this place while walking to the castle. It has a menu of the day which had 7 dishes and several desserts, which are all vegan and some are gluten free. The meals come out quickly.
The staff were very friendly and polite. The place is exceptionally clean! Overall a great experience and would recommend to fellow travelers!

The Princess & the Castle - Edit

Set quite high up in a winding and hilly Lisbon neighbourhood behind the castle. If you get of the Metro at Santa Apolonia it's a lovely walk up the hill. This is what real Lisbon street life is all about away from the usual tourist traps. I don't do tourist traps. We had the nachos with homemade humus & olives and a spicy bean burrito at €4.50 and €8 respectively. The burrito was immense. This was complemented with a delicious red wine sangria and a cheeky bottle of Super Bock beer. I prefer Super Bock, rather than Sagres. Prices are good, staff are friendly, the interior is legendary. This makes the Princesa a rock solid Lisbon veggie venue. Veggie? It's actually vegan. This is a place I will always visit in the amazing city of Lisboa. I can imagine it being quite a special place at night.

Pros: location , friendly, prices

Happy - Edit

I was satisfied with the place, I really liked the atmosphere. The stuff made my visit feel friendly and cozy. However, the menu was not very varied and the portions I was given were quite small. I would still recommend this place though. It is located in a beautiful neighbourhood!

Pros: The atosphere, The location

Cons: Portions

Comida simples mas muito saborosa! Gostava de ver mais opções na ementa :)

Staff muito simpático e prestável! Obrigada pela dose "à tuga"! Definitivamente um sítio a voltar.

Pros: Vegan, Sabor

Cons: Espaço pequeno, Poucas opcoes

Good Vegan Food - Edit

Myself and my girlfriend went here on a Tuesday night for a quick bite to eat. Our walk to the restaurant wasn’t the most picturesque, although I think this was due to the side that we approached from (north rather than south.) The restaurant itself was very welcoming and bright despite being quite small. It became quite busy during our meal, which may be due to the nearby Food Temple being closed on Tuesdays. The banner outside states that it is a vegetarian restaurant, but the staff confirmed that the menu was 100% vegan (there seems to be some confusion on here.)

The service we received throughout was very good - with the meals clearly explained and dishes brought out quickly. The food itself was tasty and quite inventive - my only negative was the presentation which on a couple of the dishes could have been improved. In particular I had a vegan sausage with steamed vegetables and mash - the sausage was broken in parts, the veg consisted only of some steamed brocolli and the whole dish was covered in a strangely coloured sauce, but each element was delicious so its a minor point. On the positive side the desserts(chocolate salami and an excellent Banana and strawberry cake) were superb. Overall we really enjoyed our meal here and the price was very reasonable.

Good and friendly vegan restaurant. - Edit

Some of the other reviewers have said that this was a vegetarian restaurant, but when we visited, the menu consisted entirely of vegan dishes. The food was good, and the desserts were excellent. Staff were friendly and there was a good atmosphere. Some connection with Indian spiritual beliefs, but this was not emphasised. The place was calm, pleasant and interesting.

Pros: All vegan, Good food, Very pleasant staff

By submitting this post you agree to HappyCow Terms

So good!!! - Edit

The food was perfect. I loved the attention given to clearly identifying what is gluten-free. The space is very cosy and all the staff was really nice and ready to help and recommend/explain the dishes. And they weren't trying to rush us although we arrived at a late hour. It's located in a traditional and now also multicultural beautiful neighbourhood. Definitely a must go in Lisbon!

quite all right - Edit

As somebody mentioned before it is a vegetarian restaurant, you might check with the staff if food you want to order is surely vegan. Meal tasty, not many options to chose from though. Staff friendly.

Friendly service, OK food, not vegan - Edit

The service here was very friendly. The food was OK, nothing special. But, it's vegetarian, not vegan. I accidentally ate dairy here I think and felt very sick.

Interessante - Edit

Não me arrebatou.
Voltarei. Quero experimentar outros pratos e sobretudo ver se melhoro a pontuação.
Destaco ainda a simpatia do atendimento. Um ponto claramente a favor.

Pros: Espaço, Atendimento, Preço

Cons: Menu fraco, Comida aquecida, Falta de algum sabor

A cozy vegan place - Edit

We had a very nice dinner here. Good food (not a very elaborate menu though) and drinks and a lovely cake for dessert. Admittedly it is not on the list of cheap places, but I found it fair.

Also, the atmosphere is cozy and the staff very friendly. This is a place where you can enjoy an evening out with some friends (though it is small - you might want to reserve).

Pros: Good quality food, Nice atmosphere , Friendly staff

Cons: Moderate prices, Short menu

so much beauty - Edit

I had a salad, a chocolate cake, some chocolate salami and a coconut ball. Left out the main dish because the salad was already quite big and yummy and I couldn´t resist the variety of desserts.
The dishes were arranged really lovely. As I call the owner my friend I asked if he did that for me and he said "nope, it´s always like this"

Pros: beautiful people, beautiful dishes, beautiful place

Cons: there comes a time you have to leave

Little disappointing - Edit

We visited this place after Te food temple restaurant, and this was very disappointing for us. The food had no flavour, little portions, my boyfriend didnt get his food enought heated, so it was a bit pity as it was rainy and cold. Only good things were their desserts, we tried the cake and chocolate salami.
Would be helpfull if u have clue how to get there as the map doesnt really help much as the streets look all the same.
Its near the crossing of tram 12 and 28, where the view point is. U have to continue walk where the tram 12 goes.

Pros: Nice staff

Cons: Small portions, Difficult to find

Overrated! - Edit

Really small portions, quite expensive. The beer is cheap. Staff is very nice. I can recommand the nachos with hummus and olives. The moussaka is just Zucchini with eggplant and Brokkoli. Nothing else. I won't eat a second time here.

Pros: cheap beer

Cons: really small portions

a big delusion... - Edit

We tried this place because we've read here that it was so nice but in reality it was a real delusion!! Expensive, not so yummy: the soup seemed to be the spinach cooking water!!! The quiche seemed to have inside the meal of the day before.... The only good thing is that is very central....

I was here during my last trip to Lisbon, the food is amazing the best lasagna, burritos and Buddha's bowl very tasty food, well prepared and friendly staff. They also have fresh juices and super yummy green juice, the desserts and moth watering too. Highly recommended and even my non-vegetarian friends loved the food!!

Pros: Excellent food, Friendly staff, Great value for wallet

Overrated - Edit

The meal I had in this restaurant was the worst I've ever had in any restaurant in my life. Seriously. And the person who came with me agrees. The food was extremely salty, with no taste and too much cooked. The ingredients had no quality; the bread of the burger was the same as the hotdogs', which we buy in the supermarket and the chips (fries) were potato straws (shoestring potato) bough also in the supermarket (those two things were NOT made in the restaurant, that I know). The price was absurd.
I live in Lisbon and this may be the worst vegetarian restaurant in the city. [edit by staff]

Pros: good decoration, good location

Cons: horrible food, the staff could be more nice

expensive - Edit

Although lisbon doesn't have a lot of vegan places...this restaurant which was right next to the apartment we stayed in was a disappointment. The staff is very nice and the place is clean but comparing to other places the price is very high for what u get. We ate there twice, the vegan burger is nice but the borrito is realy weird and tatally fell apart when we tried to eat it, the salad that came with it was very plain just a couple of lettuce leaves with some tomatos . We paid 20 euros for 2 *small* main dishes and one soft drink. Over all it's good to have all vegan place in a city with not many options but the prices are high.

Pros: all vegan, clean

Cons: expensive, small dishes,

Delicious Restaurant - Edit

Last saturday night i went to 'Princesa do Castelo' to have a celebrate dinner and i spent such a good time! First of all due to the kind and sweet atmosphere that lives there, courtesy of Sofia, really nice and pleasant, and especially because of the delicious food we tasted. So talented vegan chef, Nandan D Bhoopalam, has presented us with a original and tasty food, in one of the best restaurants i was in my life.
For sure i will return it.
Thank you!

Andreia

Pros: Excellent Food, Plenty of healthier options, Really nice presentation of dishes

Cons: Maybe add a little more amount in dishes

Revamped and 100% Vegan - Edit

I've been following Princesa do Castelo on facebook for quite a while, and I noticed they were revamping the place since the end of 2013. This Friday (25/04/14) I went back to check their page and saw they are finally open and as a 100% Vegan restaurant. Went there 2 consecutive days, once in the afternoon to eat a cake and once to eat lunch and let me tell you, both were really good. They have around 4 to 5 dishes, soup and 2 deserts every day. You must taste their vegan cakes.

Both the food and the atmosphere were awesome.
The food is 100% organic.
The fresh squeezed juices are great.

Pros: Organic Vegan, Fresh food and juices, Great taste

Cons: Should have some vegan sandwiches in the, Prices should be toned down a little

Nice restaurant in Alfama - Edit

I went to this restaurant for dinner and the menu left me with lots of vegan choices. I had the Piroggi which were good but the portion was very small. The cake I ordered afterwards (because I was still hungry) was good and I liked that it was apparantely made without or with little sugar.
The atmosphere and the decoration are nice and the location is ideal. Only the staff was very inattentive and never came to my table.

Pros: choice of food, atmosphere, location

Cons: small portions, inattentive staff

A vegan oasis - Edit

If you are going to Lisbon, then you should add this restaurant to your 'to-do list'. Its location is ideal, in the centre of the Alfama region. We couldn't believe the menu when we first saw it. In fact, there was so much on offer the hardest decision was what to have, as opposed to should we eat there. Ultimately we ate there for lunch and dinner, with both meals lovingly prepared with fresh ingredients there and then. The owners, who I wish I had asked the names of, were so friendly and helpful I didn't really want to leave!

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Location, Price

Great vegetarian restaurant and homemade food - Edit

1 March 2013 Brenda S, London, Großbritannien

We stopped by in the afternoon and had lovely cups of tea and small bites of sushi, samosas and then dessert. Our host and owner was incredibly prompt and helpful giving us directions to the closest local store for bananas and oranges. We left there having eaten loads of little finger foods and tea for 2 all for 8 euros. The atmosphere was very homestyle with hand painted walls and about 6 tables. It was small, cozy, clean, welcoming and incredibly affordable.

Pros: excellent homemade dishes, vegetarian and vegan food, options for allergic people
