Non-veg

Serves meat, vegan options available. Offers a selection of salads and side dishes which, combined, can make for a veggie or vegan meal. Sample dishes such as beans with garlic (lobio salad), beans with tomatoes, vitamin salad with cabbage; other salads contain mayonaise and/or egg, but each salad lists its ingredients. Various styles of potatoes can be ordered to add to your meal. Nice setting inside with white tablecloths or dine at the patio under plane trees.

Not very good options, average

This place had pretty much no vegan options, the restaurant itself was nice but the waitstaff weren’t particularly helpful. I had the hummus and eggplant salad (with the meat removed). The salad was actually delicious, but I otherwise would not recommend

Good food, service can improve

I did enjoy the food, it has some options for vegetarians. The beans and aubergine are great options, as well as the tea. The waiter was not as kind as I'm already used to in Uzbek culture, but yeah just a minor detail. You can pay with card ✌🏼

Meaty

Very few options and if you’ve been here more than a few days you’re probably already tired of tomato and cucumber salad. It’s on the menu here too, along with a bunch more salads, many of which have cheese or beef in them. The waiter suggested the grilled vegetables and rice, both were sides. There were five slices of vegetable in total on the plate- eggplant, mushroom, and three slices of pepper. The white rice was ok. The bean appetizer was delicious and much appreciated but that’s really all there is to eat here. Your meat loving friends might like it and at least they have wine, beer and liquor

Pros: Beans were good

Cons: Not many options , Menu is a photo album of meat

Delicious vegan meal made to order

This is a beautiful setting, the waiter was incredibly helpful, going through the menu with me , suggesting what dish could be made vegan by not adding the beef. Informing me the bread has milk in it, and the potatoes have butter on them.
We had two delicious meals here.
Excellent service, beautiful setting delicious food and good value.
We had a two course meal for two with wine that cost the equivalent to £29. ( with service)

Pros: Knowledgable waiter, Delicious food, Beautiful setting

Cons: Remember to ask if you want a starter as a main.

Some vegan option but not many

Given that Uzbek cuisine is generally as far from veggie/vegan as you can imagine, having at least some options is better than to have none whatsoever. Platan was on the better side of having some options than the few other places visited on a short trip to Samarkand.

Other than a couple of salads, there was lentil soup, side rice and Georgian lobio beans (although a bit too garlicky).

The staff was friendly and the service wasn't too slow either. A late lunch for two with beer was about $30 or so.

Try the eggplant salad

We were a bit sceptical given the many negative reviews here, but found this to be a decent option in the city! The eggplant salad was excellent, alongside peas and roasted potatoes. This was just about everything vegan on the menu.

Decent non-meat option

The restaurant offers some vegan salads and side dishes. Among the menu items are also buckwheat and peas as side dishes, for those craving some more wholesome options in the sea of greasy fried vegetables, one can choose from in an Uzbek restaurant. It is a solid vegan/vegetarian option if in Samarkand, where there is really not much to choose from.

Don't recommend

The place itself is nice but the atmosphere is very weird; the stuff is kinda scared or sth? They have one of those big menus with thousands of dishes with pictures and out of this thousands there is no vegan main dish (not sure about vegetarian but I highly doubt). I ordered grilled vegetable and they had a strong taste of meat cus I guess the make them on the same thing. So unless you want to eat agian French fries with tomatoes and lettuce - don't go there.

OK for lacto-vegetarians; limited vegan options

Platan is one of the most popular restaurants in town with tourists and travelers in general, but isn't much to write home about for vegetarians, vegans, and healthy eaters. It isn't the most veg-friendly option in town (the honor of that title goes to Old City, IMHO), but is an option worth considering at least once during your visit.

The mostly meat-oriented menu includes a handful of lacto-veg dishes (two or three of which can be requested without cheese if language barriers don't prevent that), plus a few side dishes (e.g. grilled veggies, french fries).

I had a plate of grilled veggies topped with dill and served with a tomato sauce for dipping, which had good flavor. Though it was less oily than the Uzbek norm, it still had more oil than I'd have preferred, but otherwise it was pretty good.

There are three seating areas: The main indoor dining room (which allows smoking), a smaller indoor non-smoking room (that looks like a classically posh reading room, much more pleasant than the main dining room), and a spacious outdoor patio dining section.

Service was mixed: Some were helpful and responsive, and others seemed not to care at all, so if the first person you ask for something doesn't come through, you might have better luck calling on another. My food was actually served fairly promptly, but it took me a total of 40 minutes to pay the bill (30 minutes and two requests to get the check, and another 10 minutes to get my change). This might have been due to the lunch rush (the place is popular with tour groups).

My suggestion: Consider trying this place once during your stay in Samarkand (especially if Old City is fully booked), but try to avoid the peak lunch and dinner hours, and make a reservation if you can.

Decent food but not really vegan friendly

Well, the restaurant was part of our hotel and the only one recommended by HappyCow and other websites, so it was our only choice. We asked for a vegetarian menu, and the waiter said we had to select among the side dishes (of course...). We knew Uzbekistan is not a paradise for vegans, so we were ready to order fries and salads! We had a vitamin salad, made with cabbage, tomatoes, raisins, carrots, no onions, only oil and lemon as dressing. We ordered other several dishes: grilled potatoes (ok); French fries (too junky to me, my husband liked them); grilled veggies (tasty but greasy); veggie stew (very basic); bread (always delicious in Uzbekistan). My husband ordered a soup too. 7 dishes, 1 big bottle of sparkling water and a coffee= 13 dollars (including 15% of service). Everything is decent, if you consider that this place is your only option. I would not recommend it in other situations and countries, as this is just a regular restaurant where you have to order side dishes, but here it’s the only choice. It’s a smoking restaurant, ask for the non smoking room if you don’t like eating in a cloud of smoke. Service is poor and slow, and staff doesn’t understand well English, so be patient. It might happen that they have no cold water when outside is 38 degrees...

Pros: It’s your only option

Cons: Little basic choice , Poor and slow service
