Their vegan arepa (black bean, avocado, plantain) was absolutely delicious. I'm writing this quite belatedly (though I've been wanting to go back! I don't eat out much though.) but I'm pretty sure it was Guasacaca sauce I got which was flavorful and lovely. Gluten free. I loved the plantains in the arepa so much that I order a side of plantains later, but these were disappointingly not cooked the same way. The ones in the arepa were quite moist whereas the side ones are pressed flat and cooked pretty dry and crispy. They were tasty dipped in more of the sauce, but I liked the in-arepa ones more. Food was ready relatively fast.
We got the plant-based arepas with spicy sauce, and they were unbelievably bland. Outside of the spicy sauce, there was no seasoning at all. I’m sure they cook their own black beans, but this tasted like a can of unsalted beans poured into the arepa. Just awful.
Veg on the Edge is also in this plaza and their stews, soups, and tacos are always so delicious. We tried Pana because I’ve wanted to try their vegan option and Veg on the Edge was closed for an employee break. If you’re in the area, don’t bother with this. Veg on the Edge is worth a short wait if required.
One of THE best food trucks that you're going to find here in the Santa Cruz area that pop up around town, on campus, and at markets.
Their selection of arepas are fantastic. They have one fully vegan option which is their avocado, black beans, and plantains arepa. All for about $11 and are truly some of the best ingredients you can sandwich between two crispy doughs of goodness. Don't sleep on the veg options!
Everything is made fresh to order and the staff are wonderful. They have a brick and mortar now at Abbott Square so whichever method you choose, definitely give Pana a try.
