Homecooking and amazing nut tart - Edit
I totally felt like I was visiting a family friend in this small, busy and popular vegan lunch restaurant with a perfect list of traditional home-cooked vegan meals. While the cheesecake is the only non-vegan item, the nut tart was DELICIOUS, we ordered a second slice. I haven't had some like pecan pie since become vegan (and this is so much more comprehensive) and I loved it.

Good food, great cake - Edit
We got there late afternoon and couldn't get the set meals anymore, but they still had a menu with 3(? don't remember) probably vegan dishes. I say probably because they weren't labeled and we only asked about the vegetable pasta which we then got. Tasty and with a variety of vegetables, medium sized portion, just right if you're not super hungry or want some room for dessert.
Read moreThe cakes aren't labeled either but we asked and three of them were vegan, got the nut tart, absolutely amazing!
Pros: The nut tart
Cons: No vegan labels (but great communication)

Conveniently located near the station - Edit
I had the lunch set that today was potato croquette, it was tasty but not awesome, and although I am accostumed to Japanese small portions, I thought this one was even smaller than others, but more pricey in comparison.
Read moreAlso please note that on the menu there's a bonito flakes onigiri, so it seems that the food on the menu is not all vegan anymore.
I took a photo of the opening hours, last order is at 5.30 pm on weekdays and 4.30 pm on Saturdays, closed on Sundays.
I really appreciated the little store next door that sells a variety of organic and vegan products including vegan curries, breads and assorted snacks. I was actually looking for some pre-made meals to bring with me while travelling to more remote areas, so this was prefect.
Pros: English menu, Close to Sendai station , Grocery store next door
Cons: Apparently they have dishes that include fish, Cash only

Lots of fresh veg which we loved! The food was really tasty and the cafe was very cosy. Not 100% vegan though so just check when ordering.

Is it possible to have dinner here, since they close at 19:00 (what is the last order)? I'm asking because some restaurants who serve mainly lunch tend to run out of food by late afternoon. This one opens till 19:00 and is so on the borderline. I'm hoping that early dinner there is a real option.

Delicious food - Edit
I had the katsu set with miso soup, rice and salad. It was really tasty! The atmosphere and service was great, the restaurant was quite small however so on a busy day, it may be difficult to get a seat. I would definitely come back. Definitely recommend having a poke in the shop next door too!

One of my favs! - Edit
Small restaurant within walking distance from Sendai station. I love the the seitan katsu (cutlet) menu which comes with rice, miso soup and veggies, but there are plenty of other options and an English menu.
Read moreThe staff are very kind and will guide you through the options, from the menu to the baked goods, to make sure you meet your dietary preferences; they even went to the healthy food store next door to bring some extra vegan sweets for me.

Delicious! - Edit
I showed my vegan japanese card and she pointed out the vegan menus. The curry was DELICIOUS and there was a vegetable soup as well (more of an appetizer size). I recommend the curry. They also have Vegan baked goods. And a store right next door that says it has Vegan options as well (it was closed by the time we left the restaurant). They have a last order time but they took us in anyway. Such nice staff.

Great! - Edit
I ordered the Guruten-Katu Set ("cutlet" made of seitan) and liked it! It had some Japanese vegetables I'm not sure I knew. My friends said they liked the curry and Onigiris they ordered.
Read moreBeware of one Onigiri with fish (bonito), from what I understood it can be made vegan or not. All others options are vegan.
The place has typical Japanese style and is open during non-meal hours, which is great when you are not synchronized with them. They give you free tea and refills, most probably made from Rooibos tea or similar.
More infos on the place I didn't see on HappyCow:
- Have an English menu
- Open every day except Sunday from 11am to 7pm, and to 5pm on Friday

Really sweet place - Edit
We came to Ohisamaya after a long and tiring day trip out to Yamadera. We were welcomed and given an English menu and some redbush tea. I had the seitan katsu while my partner had the veggie curry. Both were really tasty and the service was lovely. Unfortunately we arrived just before last orders so the shop had already closed.

Gorgeous little gem - Edit
Small and cozy restaurant with a health shop next door, very conveniently set near Sendai station. The food was great, I had the set menu with brown rice and goma-shio (sesame with salt), soup, salad, pickles, tofu and fake fried meat, which was incredibly good. My boyfriend had the curry which was very delicious as well. We were served delicious organic tea from Sonnentor, a brand that I know from Germany. The highlight was the cakes: The cheese cake was good, but the black sesame cake was mindblowing, crunchy but not dry, very flavourful as well with a perfect sweetness level, and probably one of the best things I've eaten in Japan.

Ohisamaya near Sendai Station, Chuo4 chome-8-17, Aobaku, Sendai. Is less than 100m along Kitamemachi dori (Washington Hotel is on corner of that street and Atago-Kamisugi dori).

My friend and I went there for dinner. The place was easy to find. It's a tiny restaurant but cosy and warming. The 2 ladies who run the restaurant are very nice and helpful. They speak a little English and there is an English menu.
Read moreI had the Ohisamaya set and my friend the Japonese noddle set, at 1,380¥ each. They were both very tasty and delicious! And the portions were fairly generous. There are both vegetarian and vegan desserts, you just have to ask if you want a vegan one. We tried the Japonaise orange cake. Again it was delicious. They also sell biscuits. When I asked for vegan biscuits they brought me some more.
It was really a great experience! Be sure to stop there if you visit Sendai.

This place saved my life! - Edit
What a great little gem this place is. I am vegetarian, working in Sendai for 6 weeks, and i only speak English. My first few days here were hard going in terms of food - everything seems to contain meat or fish, and, not being at all familiar with the language, i was eating just plain white rice alot! And then i found Ohisamaya. Small menu of perfect, organic, veggie food. Veggie miso soup, brown rice, seasonal salads, rice balls, wheat gluten cutlets (amazing!) and veg fritters. Staff are so friendly and helpful, and even though they don't speak much English, they try so hard to help. Plus, there is an English menu now. Oh, you get delicious tea when you arrive. And the organic cakes & cookies are just yum! As the veggie options in Sendai are limited, I eat here several days a week, and I cannot rate highly enough!
