276, Higashinotoin Dori Off, Ayanokoji Dori, Kyoto, Japan

Serves meat, vegan options available. Located close to tourist spot of Shijo Dori. Buffet style using many raw vegetables from its own garden in Kyoto. Menu has changed over time, and as of Feb 2016, there are less veg/vegan choices then before. Nonetheless you will find around 5 marked veg items, 2 types of noodles (that you can eat without broth), hot bread, hot potatoes, and the salad bar which offers around 15 or so veggies. Note: In Japan kitchens often stop serving 30-60 minutes before closing time. Call ahead to confirm. Open Mon-Sun 7:00am-10:00pm.

Nothing to write home about - Edit

We came for dinner and while the staff were friendly, they weren't really available with explaining the buffet/ hot meal options. So I t was difficult to figure out which ingredients or options were meant to go together or not. My vegan partner didn't have many hot meal options available and overall, the food wasn't as tasty as the other Japanese restaurants we tried this trip

Pros: Fresh salad options

Cons: Difficulty understanding hot meal options , Not so cheap

Crowded and bland - Edit

I was very disappointed by how few plant-based options there are and by how crowded the place is. I had white rice, salad, some boiled veggies plus tofu - and that was it.
One of the worst restaurants I've been to in Japan.

NB. The dishes only have descriptions in Japanese.

Cons: Few plant-based options, Crowded , Bland

OK in a Pinch - Edit

I came here for a late dinner and was not particularly satisfied. This restaurant is listed as Nasukamo here and Miyako Yasai Kamo on Yelp, but neither English name is displayed on the building. Buffet was ¥1350 (pay into machine) and included assorted fresh vegetables plus a few other things. Selection of vegetarian items was disappointing. Seemed like some items were possibly vegetarian, but signs were in Japanese, Google Translate couldn't make heads or tails of the signs, and staff did not speak enough English to answer any questions. Basically I paid US$12 for dry salad and small tofu cubes. Note that food is available until 10:30 only.

Happy diners - Edit

Went for dinner. Mixed veggie and non-veggie buffet all clearly explained by the staff. All fresh tasty food and you can have as much as you want.

Buffet - Worth the money - Edit

Went for dinner. You have to pay at machine at the entrance and then all you can eat buffet.
Relatively spacious restaurant and good quality food.
The vegetarian options were marked in english which was convenient.
They also had a lot of vegetables for salad.
Was surprised when they had only white rice and not brown rice (genmai). They had other fish/meat dishes if you are going along with some one who is not vegetarian.

Location near Shijo-Karasuma.
-1 Because I have eaten better Japanese washoku (set meals) at a couple of other places but then the food was still good. Less cooked food and more of salads

Pros: Location, All you can eat buffet, Decent selection

Delicious, Fresh, Seasonable Veggies - cheap! - Edit

I am so glad I stumbled over this place. Huge selection of local, seasonal organic vegetables. There is a huge selection: (cold) salad bar, steamed vegetables and yams, noodles and design-your-own soups, make your own hot pot, noodle salads and stir-fry dishes....!For the equivalent of €10 when we were there I had a feast of healthily prepared veggies - and finally something other than white rice and pickles!! :-) When we went at 7:00 on a Sunday (!) night it was PACKED with locals - not another tourist in sight. Highly recommended!!
You buy your ticket from a vending machine and the buffet is all you can eat. Pretty self explanatory. Ice water is free and drinks cost extra.

Pros: Healthy, Frugal, Portion size (unlimited)

Cons: Bit confusing for first-timers, Crowded

Natural veggies from garden - Edit

As a tourist & communication problems. It's hard to find a vegetarian here. Very lucky I found this shop just closed to the tourist spot of Shijo Dori. Look for the Emporio Armani shop & exactly opposite the shop there is a small road. Just walk about 100m in & you may find it. Although they serve meat but very little and majority is vegetables.
The price is very cheap for Japanese standard and the food is very tempting and fresh. Cosy environment and friendly service. Highly recommended.
