Great vegan place in asmall town

I got the vegan curry. It was delicious. They don't start serving stuff on the right side of the vegan menu until after 4pm. We got there at 3:30. But we ordered an appetizer and waited and they got me the dish right at 4. The waited was friendly and super helpful.

Pros: Dedicated vegan menu, Super friendly waitress

Cozy environment, great food

The main menu says "vegan options available" and when I asked about that, our server brought me a separate vegan menu! So good!

Pros: Separate vegan menu, Head chef and owner who cares!, Variety of tastes

Cons: Only vegan dessert is sorbet

Lunchtime letdown

I always appreciate when a restaurant offers vegan options especially when they are clearly defined and their food is good. We have been several times and yes the service is slow. Not sure if staffing is still an issue or not but it seems to be getting worse. I was already hungry when we got there and was disappointed to find out I could only order from the left side of the vegan menu. I wasn’t about to pay $19 for the only entree so I settled for the Greens and Grains salad. I assumed I would get the large but when we finally got the food, it was the small. Worse part was they tried to charge me $12 when on the menu it was marked $9 for the small. So basically I was charged $1 less for a puny salad than what the Omni’s in my family paid for huge sandwiches and a plate full of fries! When I pointed out the price to our server she went and got the regular menu to show me the price. I reminded her I had the vegan salad with no cheese so she to a few bucks off. I hope they can solve their staffing issues because it is a nice little restaurant and has a good atmosphere.

Pros: Separate Vegan menu, Unique choices, Great Patio

Cons: Overly priced, Slow service

We had a wonderful first visit to Midway Mercantile! Separate vegan menu!

Loved that this restaurant has a printed vegan menu you can request that has 6 creative vegan options…not a bland veggie burger to be found! Staff familiar with vegan options and happy to accommodate. Chef/Owner made the rounds to tables at the end of the night and introduced himself. Nice touch. Beautiful outdoor patio. Looking forward to going back! Great vibe.

Pros: Separate vegan menu with 6 different options, Beautiful summer outdoor patio seating , Local, friendly, neighborhood spot

Cons: Servers seemed a bit overwhelmed at times

Would Rate 5 Stars if Possible

I travel all over and one of my favorite places to eat is Midway Mercantile. I would give it five stars if I could, but understand that rating is reserved on this site for restaurants that are fully veg. They have a separate vegan menu that you need to ask for. The vegan curry is my favorite. You can ask to add tofu. The tofu is prepared with a perfect crisp on the outside. The curry sauce is light and so flavorful. I've noticed the veggies change a bit depending on what is fresh and available. The last couple of times, the dish had AMAZING Brussel sprouts in it. I have gotten the grains and greens salad a few times and it is always delicious. The ambiance is lovely and the service is great.

Vegan only menu a plus, but….

I really wanted to love this restaurant because they offered a vegan only menu, but there were too many “mishaps”. Let me start with what I liked…I liked that they had a vegan only menu (ask for it because not part of main menu), atmosphere with outdoor patio, pizza oven, dressing on the grains/greens salad (see attached image of menu) and our attentive waitress. Now what needs to be improved. First off, I get that Covid has left restaurants short staffed, but management needs to take that into account before seating people. It is better to offer a higher quality dining “experience” to fewer people at one time. This ultimately equates to better guest retention rate, better tips for staff (we tipped 22% to waitress because she kept her cool despite everything listed here), and higher ratings on travel and food sites. In short, we waited way too long for our food, three out of four tables were never bussed, they had a fly challenge, and I overheard another couple leave after ordering because of long wait. Not what is expected when paying $15 for a salad in a sit down restaurant. As for flavor, while I thought the thin crust on their pizza was yummy, I felt their homemade pizza sauce was very bland. Again, I really wanted to like this restaurant better!! That said, I will consider giving them another chance when in area (which, by the way, is lovely). Meanwhile I hope the owner takes a look at this post and adjusts accordingly for their guests…regardless if vegan or not. Giving 3 stars because of all vegan menu.

Pros: Offers vegan only menu - major plus, Location

Cons: Wait time for food - short staffed, Bland pizza sauce, Price based on overall experience
