Korean food has always been, rather annoyingly, on the periphery of my culinary landscape. Having only had a scant few interactions with some exemplary dishes from this marvellous cuisine, I have been earnestly seeking more (any) plant-based offerings to sate my longing. Just when all hope seemed lost, this diminutive, unassuming eatery came to the fore and rescued me from my culinary limbo.
Read moreBefore I even begin to wax lyrical about the meal, I have to disclose some vital information about the unbelievably generous opportunity that was afforded to me. Having stumbled upon this place via an advert that appeared on my feed for their unlimited banquet offer, I made enquiries – in hope more than expectation – about which options would be suitable for vegans. The initial response was crushingly disappointing, as there was no joy to be found on this particular menu, but then the follow-up made my soul soar. Almost unbelievably, the management said that I could still avail myself of the same offer, but with items from their separate vegan à la carte menu. Never have I been quicker to accept a proposal in my life.
Of course, this all would have been for naught if I had arrived and been served substandard fayre though, given the circumstances, I was more than willing to be lenient if things weren’t quite up to the mark. As it transpired, not an iota of my clemency was required.
From the instant I crammed the initial forkful (my sincere apologies to all purists for spurning the chopsticks; gluttony is easier with western utensils) of kimchi into my gaping maw, I knew that I had landed on something special. Supple yet retaining bite, tangy yet not overbearing, this simple offering set a standard that would endure. Whether it was the delectable tteokbokki doused in rich, spicy sauce, the feather-light, supremely fresh Yachae Kimbap, or the bold, brash, and impossibly crisp Gochujang tofu, not a single dish faltered.
Though this was a showcase of excellence throughout, I did find myself inexorably drawn to two creations in particular: the Jeon pancakes and the bibimbap. Both were outrageous and graced my table on numerous occasions.
Even if the quite absurd deal were no longer available to me, I would return here in a heartbeat, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
