Serves meat, vegan options available. All dishes on menu can be made vegan, using tofu, including curries, pad dishes, coconut soups and others. Reported closed, Apr 2018.
Typical shopping center location here in the SF North Bay. It’s a big shopping center, so don’t give up searching for this place. The sign is hidden behind a tree, near a sporting goods store. You will be enchanted from the moment you step inside and take in the warm colors and the tasteful decorations including a stunning water feature.
Compared to many restaurants in the area, the menu is clear about what a vegan can order without wondering if it will arrive 100% plant-based. If a dish includes fish sauce or oyster sauce, then the menu tells you this. Most of the noodle dishes and several rice dishes include egg. The menu tells you this. The kitchen will happily omit the egg at your request. Every soup, stir fry, curry, noodle and fried rice dish can be ordered with tofu. The menu choices include “vegetarian.” This means served with tofu. No seitan, soy curls or other meat substitutes are served here.
In every one of several recent visits to Lemongrass, the food has been stellar: fresh ingredients, prepared and presented with care. Service is friendly and attentive, even when the room is full. If you arrive near the end of lunch service, as we did on one occasion, your server will let you know right away how soon you need to place your order before the kitchen closes. Once the kitchen closes, the water feature is turned off, but you are welcome to linger at the table for as long as you want, as we and another table chose to do.
As a peanut sauce lover, I can recommend the pad peanut sauce stir-fry and the pra ram with lightly steamed vegetables. I have also enjoyed yellow curry and pad eggplant. Don’t forget the sticky rice, unless you prefer brown rice. What’s missing for the vegan? Desserts, salads, apps other than spring rolls.
Being a hour north of San Francisco, vegan options become limited. We love lemongrass cause not only can you make ANYTHING on the menu vegan just by choosing tofu instead of meat, it is delicious! They really no how to cook veggies perfectly. My favorite is the Tom Kha Coconut Soup and the Pad Eggplant Tofu. My husbands favs are the green and red curries with tofu. If you are in the Petaluma area, you should give Lemongrass a try!
