Kung Tak Lam - Shatin, Hong Kong - Edit

I've eaten in this branch before. I visited their sister restaurant in Causeway Bay recently and it was quite a revelation. My Cantonese speaking companion asked the Manager some questions. The manager was pretty helpful and went to the kitchen to find out some info re the vegan friendliness of this place. This was good of the manager to do this as a non vegetarian and someone who had never heard before of the concept of veganism.

The mock meats contain egg. They are entitled to do that of course as lacto ovo vegetarian restaurant. What I find unacceptable though is this. On the menu there is a section at the beginning with a guide to what various symbols mean that are used through the menu. One of these symbols represents that egg is an ingredient in the dish. However there are numerous dishes across the menu that contain mock meat yet do not have an indicator next to the dish stating egg is an ingredient.

Also we were told that cow milk is used in the preparation of the stock.

Kung Tuk Lam is part of the Four Seas group. From the Four Seas website:-

"As a leading food conglomerate, Four Seas Group has a wealth of experience in the food industry and has a broad collection of product offerings including milk powders, milk, biscuits, cakes, confectioneries, snacks, instant noodles, ice-creams, health supplements, beverages, wines, seasonings and sauces, hams, sausages and meats, seafood and vegetables."

I thus have no doubt that the same production process and ingredients will be used in all their restaurants. I am also unsurprised they have no idea about veganism nor detail on vegetarian concepts.

The happycow application is coded so the lowest rating possible for an all vego eatery is 2. If this constraint were not there I'd rate this place as zero or even as negative as I could.

10% services is added.

Hard to find! - Edit

We spent an age trying to find this place, when in reality it's just a few steps from Sha Tin station: in the atrium of New Town Plaza mall, simply take the lift/elevator up to THE [email protected] 7.

Although the restaurant is officially open until 11pm, they took last order at 10pm and closed as soon as we had finished.

Just as good! - Edit

This was the first time I've eaten at this location. Been to the ones in Tsim Sha Tsui and Causeway Bay many many times. Food quality has always been consistent, never had a bad meal. That said, this Shatin location is very small compared to the other two, and there's not much of a view either. Good location though, right on the restaurant floor inside New Town Plaza mall.

Pros: yummy food, location

Cons: small restaurant, so-so setting
