A breath of fresh air in Pune

A piquant colonial bungalow transformed into a restaurant cum café. The place emits Goan/Pondicherry vibes as the colour scheme has been designed to match into. The seating arrangement is divided into two parts – Indoor, that has homely interiors and warm ambiance with Turkish lights decorated over each table. The outdoor arrangement is pet friendly and is perfect to host workshops, parties or a get together.
A brain child of Chef Keertida and Chef Radhika, Karlo is everything you would want to love spending time with the company of good food. The restaurant has vegetarian, eggetarian and vegan options curated by both the talented chefs. After completing her masters at New York and working under a Michelin Star restaurant, Chef Keertida Phadke, curated a menu that has traditional Indian recipes at the base but, a modern outlook to it.
Here’s a glimpse to the amazing creations at Karlo –
1. Stewed Tomato Soup (160/-)
2. Warming Carrot (160/-)
3. Chewy Corn (160/-)
4. Roasted Garlic (160/-)
The stewed tomato had a perfect thick consistency which is much desired in a soup. Warming Carrot and Chewy Corn were broths that had a bomb taste and were thoroughly enjoyed. My favourite was the Roasted Garlic soup for its soothing flavour and rich texture. Me, being a reluctant garlic eater, had my mind blown by this soup. In fact, Keertida even mentioned how their patrons visited Karlo again and again for this soup!

5. Ma-Me-Mo Salad (185/-)
Moving over the cliched salads of the same old ingredients, we have the Ma-Me-Mo salad which consists of Watermelon and Muskmelons combined with feta cheese and covered in a minty dressing. The mint flavour cuts right through the sweetness of melons and gets all the flavours right.

6. Game Changer (185/-)
The game changer consists of jowar (millet) soaked and plumped, red cabbage, carrots and other fresh vegetables in a vinaigrette dressing. Recommended.

7. Butte Ka Kees Panki (190/-)
Butte Ka Kees, a national favourite snack of India during monsoon and Panki, a preparation in the state of Gujarat where batter is cooked in Banana or corn leaves over chulha and steamed. Combining these two, butte ka kees panki is a preparation of mashed corn is cooked in banana leaves and served with tangy tamarind chutney. Recommended.

8. Bakarwadi-Millet Chaat (140/-)
Bakarwadi, a snack for which Pune is globally famous for, meets the healthier version of chaat when mixed with millet.

Pros: Ambiance, Location, Delicious Food

Cons: Wait Time

Karlo - Paradise For Vegetarians🌟

⏺Karlo Art Kitchen & Cafe - When food & art combines expect a masterpiece. That's how I can describe this place in a single line.👅
Recently launched cafe has all set up in Pune with their stunning food dishes. It serves almost all veg dishes though they are very confident when it comes to their tagline 'You Simply Won't Miss The Meat'!😎

⏺Ambiance - It's actually a old bungalow turned into cafe.Karlo has got feels like the bungalows of Goa & Pondicherry. Thatched roofs, small windows, and flickering lamps give this place warm feel but cheerful vibes. Walls are decorated with pretty decent interiors. Wide seating arrangement & ample no. of items on the menu makes this place a must-visit for every person out there.

⏺What I had there -

⏺Mocktails -
▶Dr. Apple - If you're looking for something warm, which will smooth your palate then this drink is for you. Apple juice twisted with warm spices to create a robust mocktail. It was sweet & flavourful not so concentrated & the spices like cinnamon & nutmeg really created a blast of flavor. Recommended!❤
▶Pom Pom - Pomegranate mocktail made of juicy pomegranate seeds is a treat to soul & eyes. Pomegranate pearls floating in muddled pomegranate & mint drink. Fresh & pure mocktail was tart yet tasty.

⏺Soups -
▶Stewed Tomato - There is nothing more comforting than a bowl of hot tomato soup on a rainy afternoon. Tangy & sour tomato flavored velvety, rich soup served with her croutoast. It tasted wonderful & acted as a lovely side dish. Thick & tasty loved it!❤
▶Chewy Corn Broth - This soup can always satisfy your food cravings. Delicious corn soup made of chewy corns, kernels, red bell peppers in a mildly flavored soupy broth. Creamy soup with thick consistency & other spices created magic of flavors.
▶Roasted Garlic - Flavored packed & very elegant soup loaded with gently roasted garlic. Rich, silky-smooth soup had dominant tasty garlic flavor.

⏺Salad - Panzanella
A Flavorful Italian salad made with tomatoes. Tomatoes seasoned with salt & pepper along with cucumbers, red onion, black olives & chewy garlic croutons. This classic Italian salad was a fresh & summery but still hearty enough to eat as a light super.

⏺Appetizers -
▶Bakarwadi Millet Chaat - Have you ever thought about combo of Chaat with Bakarwadi ? But look no further Karlo has got it. And it is specially for Punekars! Delectable chaat loaded with crunchy & spicy Bakarwadi's & then topped with tangy tamarind sauce. Simply awesome yet heavenly deliciou

Great ambiance with some next level food

There are quite a few places which makes you fall in love at first sight only, Karlo is one of them. The restaurant not only gives you an experience of a lifetime but it also helps you to forget all your stress. The whole Bungalow has a unique positive vibe which enhances your mood and adds up a energy.

The food you get here is Globally inspired as the Chef here has done her Education abroad and worked in a Michelin star restaurant and now came back to India to give us the same level of experience. The Food you get here is Influenced by all the global cuisine but the ingredients are all local so you get to taste same dishes with a local touch in it. There's a story behind every dish, some are inspired by travel, some by culture, with great ancient ingredients or a penchant for innovation. If you're die-hard non-vegetarian, I can undoubtedly say that you won't miss your meat after having food over here.

The restaurant is actually an old bungalow which is then transferred into Portuguese, Goan themed rustic looking restaurant. They've done some minimal changes and converted the whole bungalow into a paradise. The rustic look appeals more and they've kept it very simple. Everything here talks and welcomes you with a story of their own. It's a complete package which will truly satisfy your needs.

Let's get started with the main thing, Shall we?

Mocktails:
Dr. Apple
Coastal Reverie
Pom Pom
( On strict no sugar diet so didn't try anything but Dr. Apple was best as I heard from my friends)

Soups:
1. Stewed Tomato - I was blown away by the taste of this Soup. The flavor of tomato was so fresh and intense that it never felt that we are having something else. The texture of the soup was thick and it had the in-depth flavor of the freshly stewed tomato. I mean this soup can not get better than this. If you love tomato soup then you should definitely try this.

2. Chewy Corn Broth - Well, it was a watery broth which had lots of corn in it. The amount of corn was too much and it didn't feel good. I was expecting a lesser corn so it goes well with the watery broth. The broth was flavorful but the excessive use of corn ruined it.

3. Roasted Garlic - This soup was on another level. If you love garlic then you must order it. The consistency was on the medium thick level and the broth was made up of roasted garlic. The dominant flavor of garlic was overwhelming. The balance of the two flavors was just perfect.

4. Warming Carrot & Kaffir Lime - This one was on a mild flavor. The texture of the broth was semi watery but the mildly sweet flavor of carrot was there. However, I didn't find the Kaffir lime taste in it.

Salad:

1. Panzanella - We do take a lot of time to click pictures but the salad was still holding all the flavors in it which was a commendable job. The salad had all the local ingredients like bright pepper, tomato, cucumber, red onion, black olives and chewy garlic croutons. The salad offered us a bit everything in flavors, it had the tanginess of fresh tomatoes with a slight sweet texture of onions and hint of pepper and garlic. It went perfectly with the garlic croutons.

Starters

1. Bakarwadi Millet Chaat - A chaat lovers pride. This dish can not go wrong. The chaat was plate was arranged perfectly and it was eye appealing good. The stuff was heavy though, it had all the needed flavors in it which a chaat must have. The chaat was crunchy and the flavors were perfectly balanced.

2. Butte ka kees panki - Had this one first time. Its a fusion Tikki made out of spiced corn from Indore and lush Gujrati panki. It was fusion Tikki of rice flour panki and mashed spiced corn and was given with imli chutney. The texture of Tikki was good and had that slightly sweet taste of corn followed by floury thick texture. The chutney definitely enhanced the overall flavor and went well with the combination.

Tandoor platter: The tandoor platter was colorful and truly satisfying to eyes.
Lazeez Paneer - Well, the spiced paneer didn't appeal to taste buds at all. The paneer was a bit hard and the marination only had the red chili in it. I tasted a dominant flavor of red chili only, nothing else.

Brocode - Literally it was bites of heaven. The mustard mix marination gave another level of taste to the tandoored broccoli. The marination was thick and it really helped the overall flavor and enhanced the taste.

Veggie Seekh Kebabs - Veg seekh kebab was good. It didn't taste dry at all and I actually loved the veg version of seekh kebab.

Baby Potatoes - Baby potatoes coated in mild herb salsa marination and finished in tandoor. The coating was done perfectly which had char flavor to it with slightly burnt edges and the inner side was soft and gooey like it suppose to be.

Magic mushrooms - It was a bomb of juicy heaven. The marination was on some another level as it complimented the mushrooms perfectly. The marination coating was thick which gave us a two different taste. First, we had the secret recipe marination which I'm still yet to find and then the juicy mushroom.

Tapas

1. Sev Tamatar Pintxos - Too much of single element ruins the whole dish. This happened here, roasted cherry tomatoes smeared onto toast and topped with sev. The cherry tomato had a dominant flavor which overpowered everything. First I had the bite of toast then till the end, I tasted the only tomato. The overdominant flavored ruined the actual dish for me.

Eggplant roll-ups - A gem of a dish. Highly recommended if you'll ever visit Karlo. I find out the eggplant thing when the Pr told me about it. I had no idea that the gooey soft roll thing was made up of eggplant. The roll was stuffed with walnut studded creamy minty labeneh. It was too good, the gooey soft roll introduced us to the minty creamy sauce which had slight bits of pomegranate too which added a hint of sweetness to it. The overall sauce was an ocean of flavors.

Main Course:

Koomu Curry - It's a delicacy from the Famous region of Coorg. The curry was made up of freshly grated coconut, mushrooms, tart tomatoes and caramelized onions. It was served with soft Appams. The curry had a thick texture but the taste was really good. It had the floury taste of coconut I guess with the tanginess of tomatoes and a sweet hint of onions. Overall a good curry to go with appam.

Overall Verdict - My experience was pretty good. However, The service part was a bit slow and I can understand as it takes time to settle down in this area. The waiter should ask everyone at least for water. I will definitely visit the restaurant again and try their other things.
