Spicy Thai food. Better to arrive when food has just been prepared. Difficult to find because the soi has no name. From Phra Sumen Road, take the soi just beside the Kasikorn Bank, between Samsen Rd and Banphanthom Alley, cross the bridge, turn left, then the restaurant is on the right - please send HappyCow the correct map coordinates. Reported closed April 2022.

Love it - tiny gem

We loved this tiny gem off the beaten track and sooooo much cheaper than the touristy vegan places just around the corner. Little old lady couldn’t do enough for us and we paid less than £2.50 for two including drinks. Right by a small traditional ‘wet market’ also so great for people watching.

Pros: Cheap, Plenty of options, Real Thai food place and not a tourist trap

Best budget vegan in the area

Cheap and good, if you come after 10am their pre-made meals are likely to be gone. Order from the a la carte menu instead.

Pros: Cheap and delicious

Cons: Hardish to find and no frills decor

AKA Bowon?

Think theres a bit of confusion here.

I believe this place is the former incarnation of another listing on here called Bowon and that there is no longer any vegetarian food at the side of Kasikorn bank.

As far as pre cooked food is concerned, you need to get there early to assure a reasonable selection is available to choose from.

2 choices on rice - 30B. Very reasonable for this area even if the food is not always that great in my opinion.

Four stars for being pretty much the only one of it's kind in the area at a decent very affordable price.

A short menu of cooked to order food also available.

Pros: Cheap, Not just pre cooked food

Cons: Sells out early

30THB for a good meal

Rice and 2 curries our for a selection of around 6/8. Food won’t blow your mind but it’s healthy and fresh and a good change of pace compared to the other expensive vegan options around

Pros: Mad cheap , Healthy

No frills, super cheap, vegan spot

Stoked to have found this place not far from our guesthouse. We were originally aiming for Kaodaeng which is apparently right nearby but couldn’t find it, so wound up here at Bowon instead. It’s easy to spot for the big “vegan food” banners out the front.

You can either have a plate from the buffet, or they can make you something from the special menu, which is better as it’s cooked fresh - somebody else mentioned this is only avail after 11am. The buffet was okay as you got a few different dishes, but if you don’t arrive super early (like before 9am) it will probably be cold.

The dishes from the special menu were tasty and you can’t go wrong for the price - 30 baht a plate. Favourite was the tofu mushroom stir fry with chilli & basil. Will continue to come back here whenever we’re in the area.

Pros: cheap & authentic, close to Khao San area, all veg

Cons: closes at 2pm, next to fish market - can be a bit stanky

Great Value

The food tastes pretty good, even more when you take the really low prices into consideration. Would have given it 5 stars if there was no smelly fish market next to it.

Pros: Cheap Food, English menu

Cons: Near to fish market - dead fish smell

Cheap Street Food Style Place

The 5 stars are based on what it is ie very cheap street food. Before 11am it is pre cooked food where you can pick 2 choices with rice for 30bhat. After 11 there is a menu with about 15 choices on it. The food is tasty but the number of choices is not that big.

It’s not worth traveling far to eat here as it’s a basic place but if you’re in the area it’s ideal. I ate breakfast here everyday as it serves it’s purpose excellently - quick, decent food.

Pros: Cheap, Decent food

Cons: Not too much choice.

More like 3.5 stars

This was our first meal in Thailand and it didn’t disappoint. Super cheap, hole-in-the-wall little place. We got two dishes and two juices and spent next to nothing. The atmosphere is non-existent which didn’t bother us in the slightest. I think it’s as close to a street vendor as you can get while still being an establishment. The food was yummy and light. Would go back if we were in the area.

Pros: Inassuming, Cheap

Nice, friendly and cheap

Just show them what you want as english is not spoken there. Rice with two dishes is around 30 THB.

They just changed the location: Go to the old place, go straight, cross the small bridge, turn left and after 100 m it is on your right.

Very good place for vegan and food lovers !

Surprisingly delicious food! I did not expect such a big choice in such a place! We with the girl ate delicious rice with additives: tofu, vegetables, something with pineapple, soy meat, soy beans and sausages! Yes there are delicious sausages! Even the choice was different soups, I'm sure too delicious! Very chip! Big lunch for 2 people we had only for 100 Bhat !
thank you ! We must come back!

Pros: Lots of vegan options; very chip; clean; friendly

Great for on a budget!

The meals here are tasty and inexpensive, though a little cold due to the buffet nature of the restaurant. However for the price you cannot complain, 30 baht for a plate of brown rice and two dishes! The restaurant was also very easy to find using google maps.

No Frills Local Eatery

In the several years I've been visiting Kaodaeng, nothing much has changed - not even the prices! While the surrounding farang dystopia of Banglamphu has erupted into a capitalist nightmare, this little eatery remains true to its roots. If you're a fan of generous and abundant fare bursting with flavour, best to avoid their pre-cooked dishes; but their noodle soups are delicious. If - as another reviewer mentioned - you'd rather eat local vegan fare for local prices than consume bland overpriced food surrounded by other farang, this is the place to come.

Pros: local place nestled within tourist hell, inexpensive, local prices, scrumptious noodle soups

Cons: somewhat ascetic buffet fare, closes early

convenient

This place was convenient for sticking to my budget, but nothing beyond that. Maybe I needed to go earlier in the morning, but both days I went there was only one dish with both protein and vegetables and it was the same dish and it was cold both days.

Pros: completely vegan, cheap, convenient location

Cons: little variety, not fresh

Cheap and cheerful!

Easy to find! Just look for koruba hotel!
Not much English spoken but just point and pay!
50 baht for stir fry, rice, veg sausage (spicy!!!) and water
Beat that!
Arrived 9am which seemed sensible and lots of nice stuff on offer

Good, basic and very cheap j-food

I´ve been going here for years and I´m glad that there´s this cheap local vegetarian j-food restaurant so near Khao San.

They have the usual j-food available, which is ready made curries and fried vegetables that you eat with rice and which cost only about 30-40 baht and noodle soup for 30-40 baht. I love the veggie sausages they sell in these restaurants, especially if they are not those that have lots of chilli.

If you are sensitive to chilli, it´s not a good idea to pick eg. green curry here. But the food is so cheap that if you end up buying food with too much chilli you can buy a new portion.

If you have trouble finding it, it´s located next to Korbua House hotel. There are small street food stalls on this alley, but Kaodaeng is inside a building. You can spot it because of the yellow-red flags, which you should always look for if you want to find these cheap local vegetarian restaurants in Thailand. These restaurants usually never have their name written in roman letters so you won´t see their name at all and often no "vegetarian" word either.

Pros: Cheap, Good food, Near Khao San

Cons: This kind of restaurants close early afternoon, Often difficult to get attention

Good authentic vegan Thai food

I went there at 8am and there was plenty of food. The staff (elder lady) didn't really pay any attention to me and didn't know how to order, if I should sit down or go to counter. But a friendly customer pointed at the counter and said something to the lady.. She was preparing a take-away meal which looked really good, so I said I wanted the same. It was brown rice with some kind of vegetable and three of four kind of tofu/mock meat dishes. It was really good and a good breakfast (I enjoy real meals as breakfast). It was very very good and really cheap, only cost me 30 baths. I really recommend it. Not spicy at all, there is chilly sauce for those who want spicy. Also easy to find, the spot is well marked here (through the Google map).

Pros: Good steady breakfast meal, All vegan, Really cheap

Cons: None, except a bit hard to get attention from staf

Buffet food with plenty to choose from

Good food with enough to choose from the buffet. Quite some tasty meat substitutes. Food is being made in the morning so better come a bit early. Sweet people and local-style restaurant.

If food is a bit bland spice it up! :)

Pros: Cheap, Local style

Cons: Food can be cold later on the day

down a soi...

yes it's a bit hidden, but we found it. we arrived around 10am and most of the food was gone. what was left was a bit cold. it was delicious though. a plate of rice and two curries was 30 baht. so it's a deal really. i'm not sure why the listing says spicy thai food. when we went, none of the dishes were spicy. it was tasty though.

Pros: vegan, quiet soi, super cheap

Cons: get there bright and early

Real Thai Vegan Food

Rather than dropping 80B (and 20 more for rice) on a mixed veggie stirfry at a place full of farangs, check this place out. 50B gets you a plate of brown rice, a couple scoops of whatever Thai curries and stir-fries are on the buffet that day, and a little piece of mock meat. They also have a small English menu now where you can order fried rice, fried noodles, and the like. They have a nice selection of mushroom dishes, and the best Pat See-ew (like Pad Thai, but with fatter noodles) I've had in Thailand, chock full of cabbage, basil, mushrooms, and other good stuff. Only 35B!

The staff is reserved but sweet - visit a few times a row and they'll warm up to you and shower you with free bananas.

Pros: authentic Thai vegan food, fantastic Pat See-ew, cheap cheap cheap

Cons: Ambiance is nothing special, buffet dwindles after 1pm, not open for dinner

Good and cheap

It is lovely to find such a good, cheap veggie place so close to where all the cheap guesthouses are. The other veggie places in Banglamphu are quite expensive. This one is perfect for breakfast and lunch. All the pre-made stuff I've tried so far was really tasty and it's really authentic. It's quite hidden but if you're walking on the Thanon Phra Sumen you'll see a side-street full of food stalls next to a bank and that's where it is

Pros: Yummy, Cheap, Authentic

Cons: Closes too early
