Amazing vegan kaiseki

One of the previous ratings here made me confirm upon booking and a week before we arrived that the dinner was in fact vegan. My husband is vegan and we both had the vegan kaiseki and it was great! Such an experience, the beds were really comfy and the hot springs were lovely

Pros: Vegan kaiseki, Delicious mochi on arrival, Amazing building

A massive disappointment, do not go here.

Things started off on the wrong foot. I emailed many months before our stay that I was a vegan. They did not respond to my email. When I showed up, they were not ready for me and had lost track of my email. They insisted I must have sent it to the wrong email address, but I found it and showed it to them. It was correct. So dinner was a salad and some stir fried noodles with veggies. Fine for what it was, but not the 12 course feast my omni husband was getting. Probably the most expensive noodles I ever had, not the fine dining experience I paid for and requested in advance. Unfortunately, the noodle dish was the best thing I had all weekend. Clearly, there must have been a change of chefs since the previous reviewers were here. All the dishes were either over flavored in some way (too salty, too much charred flavor) or bland. Everything was beautifully presented, but a dish of plain tofu cubes is no treat, pretty or not. Omni husband complained that everything tasted strongly of fish. By the 4th meal, we were dreading sitting through it. Japanese cuisine is rightly lauded for sophisticated and often delicate flavors. We had much better meals about everywhere else we ate. Do not waste your money. Instead email somewhere else to see if they can accommodate you.

amazing surreal experience

We're getting ready for bed in our traditional futons listening to a raging river right outside after an incredible vegan set menu at Kansuiro. Service couldn't be faulted and the attention to detail in each dish was amazing. Even a simple tempura potato had us both saying "wow". The accomodation is not cheap however given it includes this dinner and breakfast it's actually quite good value. Having food of this quality served personally in your own private room in a century old guest house with the sounds of the river and forest in the background is something you'll never forget.
I would only suggest that you remind them that you are vegan when checking in (as well as obviously when booking) as we were initially served the non-vegan option however this was quickly rectified. A return visit will be top of my list next time I'm in Japan.

Pros: incredible views, surreal experience

Great vegan experience

We told Kan Suiro before we arrived that we were vegan, and it was clear this was understood and the chef was very accommodating.

We had some of the best food of our trip to Japan here, complete with the traditional ryokan experience. Unfortunately we have lost our photos of our dinner, but the breakfast photos give a good idea of the amount and variety of food.

Very happy with our stay at Kan Suiro - fantastic service, delicious food
