Breakfast Through A Different Lens

Solely based on its location, I knew that this experience would likely be a deviation from the norm, and so it proved to be – just not in the way I expected.
Of course, it would be remiss of me not to start off by giving mention of the imposing aquarium that is situated at the entrance of the restaurant. While I certainly don’t approve of such things, it is difficult not to be entranced by the majesty of it, and that you can espy it while dining does add something of a novelty factor.
Aquatic instillations aside, my focus was purely on the food-based delights to come; I was convinced that this was going to be an experience to rival any other that I’ve had in the city. Bounding up to the substantial spread, I was suddenly brought to a shuddering halt by the sight that genuinely had me on the verge of leaving. All the usual go-to staples, be it hash browns, foul madames, or buckwheat (this one felt particularly egregious), were tainted with dairy. The Indian section, usually a bastion of options, was similarly filled with lactose-laced interlopers.
Admittedly, it took a minute to compose myself. Once I did, however, I soon realised that although these default dishes were off the menu, there was still a treasure trove of alternatives to be uncovered.
The primary source of these incredible edibles was East Asian portion of the buffet. Moreish mushroom sui mai, satisfyingly hearty congee, and umami-packed braised bak choy in mushroom and garlic sauce all provided savoury satisfaction, while the ludicrously good pandan kaya and yam baos brought an avalanche of sweetness that I couldn’t resist.
While all the above was undoubtedly enough to expunge any initial ill-feeling that I may have experienced, there was still yet more to placate me further.
Yes, things may have gotten off to a rocky start, but with exceptional quality and range of choices, I was truly won over by the end.
On a final note, if you are tempted to do as I have done and start your day in style, get there early. Despite being massive, it gets busy fast.
