Quite disappointing

I had read a lot of raving reviews about this place and came expecting the best. Unfortunately I must say both me and my friend were a bit disappointed. We had a slice of frittatta and a croque monsieur, and found them both quite bland and not very exciting.
On the top of it, I have had insider info that they treat their staff poorly, a definitive no-no.

PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT THEM

Do not recommend. For starters just the name ‘Kaiaroha’ is not a word and it is offensive and embarrassing that they want to look inclusive by using reo Māori but evidently didn’t bother checking to see if it makes sense together. Kai and Aorha are two seperate words. Kaiaroha means nothing at all and is grammatically incorrect and anyone who speaks Māori picks up on that straight away.

Food was good but pricey, lovely staff, also seen various ex staff members speak of how they were not on a legal payroll with IRD and the business is evading tax.

No wonder they cry out so loudly about their vegan ‘ethics’ to compensate for cultural insensitivity and refusal to pay their human workers legally.

Pros: Staff are lovely despite not being paid legally, Food is good

Cons: They DO NOT pay staff legally, They DO NOT pay tax for having staff, Name is culturally insensitive and appropriated!

Hi Steph M. Thank you yet again for another review on our cafe....it's virtually identical but there you gave us 1 star. So I am following your cut/paste reviews around the online landscape with a cut/ paste reply...here it is....With all your concerns especially around our name- its still nice to see you appreciated our food and our amazing staff, they truly are the heart of the business! Although I understand your disapproval of our use of the name Kaiaroha, and the importance of using names in culturally appropriate ways and with the blessing of the peoples, perhaps not everyone agrees with your interpretation.

The story of how the name came about is easy to access, being on both our Facebook page and Website- but for this record... In 2011 at a time when Te Reo was not commonly used or promoted and before choosing this name, I approached a wonderful community leader from the Ratana Church commonly acknowledged as local Kaumatua. After discussions with him he suggested and gave me this name to use and affirmed that it was a good useage given what we were doing and why. Since then others have used it after us including a great group of people serving the community in Tauranga.

We stand by the decision to use the name. Certainly I do not claim to be an expert in Maori culture, but the name epitomises our values and we are foremost, absolutely a values driven business.

I would give 0 stars if I could

UNETHICAL! The manager did not pay until court was spoken about. I worked there for almost two months. Terrible and absolutely contradictory. Cannot take constructive criticism. Not good to work for. The food is amazing. The organisation is terrible. Manager cannot handle stress. Does not treat employees with respect.

Pros: Friendly coworkers , Creative food, Well cooked with love

Cons: Manager is unorganised , Manager is unethical , TRIES TO GET AWAY WITH NOT PAYING YOU
