10 stars if I could! Best ramen I’ve ever had - Edit
Going here was such an experience.
Read moreI don’t know if reservations are always required but when we walked up they had a small sign that said “Reservations Required” over the door. We stood outside looking confused and sad for a few minutes and the hostess waved us inside because they had a cancellation. Make sure you check if you need a reservation ahead.
We got tea and they had a little tea ceremony which I’ve never experienced.
My partner ordered Milk Oolong and I ordered the Blue People. Both were out of this world!!
We ordered Fried Wontons(spicy), Puto Pao Bunny Bao, and Fiery Wind Noodle Soup(spicy). The noodle soup had “chicken” and it took us to another dimension. Definitely best ramen of my life (vegan and non-vegan ramen).
We got the Wild Banana Mochi for desert and it was incredible! Definitely go here!!
I don’t remember her name but our waitress was amazing and all of the staff were really friendly.

Hit or miss with good options - Edit
I was really impressed with Jade Rabbit a couple years ago when they were just working out of a kitchen doing take out. I would crave it all the time after they closed because there's really no other restaurant in Portland that fills their void.
Read moreI went to their current brick and mortar location for the first time in July and was disappointed. The chili wontons were still excellent, but their medical soup was super under salted and I used to love it while the mushroom adobo was incredibly over salted. The tofu skin dish was bland and I only ate them with the chili wonton sauce. I went with another couple and they agreed about the adobo which they also ordered and another dim sum dish they ordered was also bland.
I really love what they offer so I hope they get adjusted and I'll take another chance in a few months.
Update 11/2023
I went back here because they were offering 50% off for teachers during the PPS strike and really enjoyed the ramen on the seasonal menu. Another time I had the kimchi pancake which was too light on the kimchi flavor for me. I would still say hit or miss here, but seems to be more hits recently and I really appreciate their menu selection so I bumped this up from 3 to 4 stars. I will continue to go back and try more things.

Beautiful atmosphere, exceeded only by the cuisine - Edit
Elegant space, shared with a brewery. But the food, oh! The best vegan chicken I have ever had, no contest. Creative Asian-inspired dishes, with plenty of healthy options. Fun-sounding cocktails which I didn’t try this time but I’ll be back for sure!

The space is absolutely beautiful and the food is phenomenal. The bunny bao were cute but honestly, not the best thing on the menu. Love all the mocktails they make, too!

Absolutely Phenomenal Food - Edit
I am absolutely blown away by the presentation of the food and the QUALI-TEA. The tea was exceptional, food was amazing, and the dessert was delicious. The server really knew how to guide us in what we were interested in and taught us how to make the tea. Would come back and cannot recommend highly enough. A little more pricey but 100% worth it.

It was fine - Edit
It was recommended we try 2 dim sum plates per person so we got the gailan, siu mai, chili oil wontons and turnip cakes. I found the food really challenging to eat. Nothing was bite sized. The gailan had been cut in some places but not all the way through. It was like trying to eat a tree. The flavors were good but my fingers were really tired trying to carry such big and heavy or awkwardly shaped food to my mouth. The wontons and siu mai were both very meat heavy. I liked them but my partner thought they were just okay. I liked the turnip cakes but again they were very thick and difficult to eat. My partner thought they were a bit bland. The spicy wontons were pretty good but also very meat heavy and hard to pick up. I would have liked to have a spoon! Overall the food was fine, but not sure if it’s worth coming out of our way for.

Everything here is delicious, the atmosphere in The Emerald is beautiful, tranquil, and elegant.
Read moreThe food is hearty and filling but also expertly crafted. The adobo "chikn" is tender and the sauce is just like what I ate growing up. The rangoons and chili wontons are an absolute treat and bursting with flavor. The bawan bunnies are delicate and chewy and the puto bao are yummy (and also a great vehicle for sopping up extra adobo sauce).
Pros: Entire menu is vegan , Good variety of small bites and hearty dishes, Flavor!!!

Lovely and delicious - Edit
The Emerald Room is pretty and a nice space to dine.
Read moreI had the signature cocktail (gin), which had good flavors and balance...nicely dialed in.
The soup was, as it seems others have found, a bit bland for me, but the mapo tofu and bao were great, as were the wontons.
Many in my party are very much opposed to mushrooms (and they say *I'm* a picky eater for being vegan), so I wasn't able to try those dishes.
I'll be back and drag some fungiphiles with me!
Pros: The Jade Rabbit Cocktail and mapo tofu, Stylish ambiance, Menu options...just the right amount

This place never disappoints - Edit
I’ve read some reviews on here stating that Jade Rabbit can be hit-or-miss, and I’m telling y’all that I’ve never had that experience. I visited PDX in 2019, and Ichiza was the best restaurant I ate at the entire time I was here. I’m a die hard for the amazing food these wonderful people make. I look forward to coming here. Their Siu Mai Dumplings and Chili Oil Wontons SEND ME and help me joyfully and fully practice mindful eating. I promise you— if you come you will not be disappointed by anything on their menu but especially not those two items. 💛

Best food in Portland - Edit
Vegan dim sum is on point. The Siu mai and cheung fun are phenomenal. There may be some kind of new protein technology going on here with their vegan beef because it has the best texture. Can't go wrong ordering anything from this spot. The owners are really sweet too!

Disappointing - Edit
Just had the most disappointing restaurant experience of recent memory here, sadly. Food took 40 minutes to come; dessert (halo-halo) came 90 seconds after the mains, and sat there melting while we tried to shove the rest into our faces. The gai lan was too salty to eat; the kimchi pancakes tasted only of sour, no salt nor spice. When we got to the halo-halo it turned out to be mostly just a mound of shaved ice, topped with undercooked sweet beans and tapioca gummies but no ice cream or coconut milk or anything. Such a bummer. Adding a star though cause the cheow fun was good.

Dim sum 🥟 and lose some - Edit
Great location for date night! Had a wonderful time out at this cool NEP restaurant. The drinks were excellent and we did get some very tasty dim sum. We especially loved the spicy oil wantons and the kimchi pancakes! On the negative side, Jade Rabbit leans heavily on recreating flavors of traditional, non-vegan dishes and uses a fair amount of meat substitutes. The faux pork rabbit-shaped bao was cute, but failed to hold together. It would be nice to see a bit more experimentation with less-processed alternatives and more unique dishes. The spicy noodle soup was OK, but lacked flavor. This was unexpected as some of the other dishes, like the vegetables, suffered from being over sauced and spiced. From what I can tell, the restaurant updates it’s menu relatively frequently and they are still working the kinks out on a few of the dishes. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Would recommend for someone looking for a few choice dishes to enjoy with very good drinks.
