They Have Vegan Kimchi! - Edit
This is a popular restaurant for hikers that does a lot of soybean-based dishes in North Korean style. (The restaurant name Ibuk Halmae means North Korean Grandmother). It is possible that most of the menu is vegan, but I only confirmed a few dishes.
Read moreThe kongguksu (콩국수) is served without egg, is very tasty and really hits the spot after hiking in the area. It is especially tasty because you can also eat the accompanying kimchi because it doesn't contain salted shrimp for a change! Note that as its typical with kongguksu, it is served bland and you need to add salt/sugar to taste. There is salt on the table and you can ask for sugar if you want it.
This is why I think the kimchi is vegan. You may wish to confirm for yourself.
The first time I went I asked if the kimchi had salted seafood (금치에 젓갈 들었어요?), expecting the answer to be 'yes' as usual, but they said there was none, and when I tried it there was no fishy after taste. On another day a Korean colleague told me about the place and said that the kimchi didn't have jeotgal (I think she said this based on flavour), and then another time I went back with a Korean friend who also asked the staff to confirm there was no salted seafood in the kimchi.
I also tried the soft tofu (순두주), potato pancake (감자부침) and mung bean pancake (녹두부침) and these were all tasty too. The mung bean pancake did not contain ham or any other meat and neither pancake tasted eggy, but I didn't specifically confirm that the pancakes had no eggs or milk.
Of the other dishes in the menu:
modubu 모두부 - firm tofu, should be vegan
dotorimuk 도토리묵 - acorn jelly salad, should be vegan
kongjuk 콩죽 - soy bean porridge, should be vegan
dububuchim 두부부침 - tofu pancake, might be vegan depending on whether pancake batter contains eggs/milk
kimchimari kuksu 김치말이국수 - kimchi roll soup, since the kimchi is vegan there's a chance the soup is too, depending whether they use anchovy/other fish-based broth
kalguksu 칼국수 - hand-cut noodle soup, I assume it has fish-based broth and is therefore not vegan, but you could ask to confirm
makgeolli 막걸리 - rice wine, usually vegan, but for some reason some Incheon brands contain milk, so if you get bottled makgeolli make sure 우유 is not in the allergen list.
The restaurant is quite small and often packed, but turn around is pretty fast. There is no English menu and I'm not sure whether any staff speak English so expect to get by via Korean, translator apps and pointing.
Pros: Vegan kimchi, Tasty and nutritious vegan options, Fast service
Cons: You might feel a little rushed
