Fresh and tasty

Right in the heart of downtown PortTownsend we found this cute place. It’s small with lovely service and fresh and tasty vegan options. Orders are placed at the counter and they bring the food to the table. The prices are not wallet breaking like some other restaurants in town. Loved the crispy organic tofu fries and especially the vegan zen rolls. Cucumber and oshinko rolls were good too. FYI the miso soup is not vegan.

Great noodles and stir fry

Got the soba noodle soup from the specials board, and the veg donburi stir fry. Excellent seasoning and flavors, hearty portions, would return!

Not bad!

The food itself was pretty good but the labeling of the menu was confusing and inconsistent. The tofu fries, for example, are not indicated to be vegan (or vegetarian), although there is nothing from the description that would indicate why. When we asked the server, she said “it’s probably the sauce. If something looks vegan and it’s not marked vegan, it’s probably the sauce.” Sauces are not mentioned in the description though.

Eventually a cook overheard me asking questions about other menu items that were marked vegetarian but, again, lacked any indication as to why it was vegetarian and not vegan e.g. a vegetable sushi roll. He said they don’t mark the item as vegan because the tofu in this roll is fried and fried in the same oil as animal products. (The same tofu featured in the “tofu fries” in the appetizer section.) Not sure why the fried tofu appetizer is not labeled vegan or vegetarian but suddenly makes a veggie sushi roll only vegetarian when the same item is featured there…but there you have it!

So, if you don’t mind decoding an inconsistently labeled menu with confusing internal logic, you will be able to find something to eat that is perfectly fine. The aforementioned vegetable sushi roll was really nice!
